Rising singer-songwriter Addison Grace (he/they) stopped by the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, in St Paul, as part of the tour in support of their latest Diving Lessons (AWAL).
Opening up the show was Chicago’s Brye with a very brief twenty-minute set for this all-ages show. In just three years, Brye had over 70 million streams on Spotify, thanks to collaborating with Cavetown and Addison Grace.
Next up was Arizona’s Madilyn Mei. The young 21 year old singer/songwriter quit her job right before going on tour, so she hopes she made the right decision. Based on hearing her songs, she’s very good and has a strong following. Just hearing her play “Dress Like a Pirate” and seeing her ring the bell, it was enough for fans to show up with an eyepatch to show support.
For “Kleptomaniacrow”, she explained the reason why she’s dressed up like “Halloween threw up on me”, is to promote her Spooky EP which just came out.
She ended her set with fan-favorite “The Chapel”, followed by “The Milk Carton.”
Her songs are so fun and good, that I’m kicking myself for not seeing her first show at the 7th Street Entry, earlier in July 2023 with Rosie.
We previously saw Addison Grace in June 2023 and said, “Grace moved between ukulele and guitar, starting the set with first-ever single, 2020’s “Sugar Rush” and would let the audience pick between two possible cover songs, before choosing “If I Were a Fish” by Pittsburgh singer-songwriter corook (w/Olivia Barton).”
Grace started her set, dressed in a homemade “ghost” costume (which is a sheet with holes cut out for eyes), singing a medley of “Fish” and “Pessimistic”. Obviously it’s a nod towards Halloween, which is coming up on Tuesday. Once the sheet came off, Grace is running back and forth on stage, before realizing they’ve got asthma.
Highlight of the set was “total stranger” Madilyn Mei showing up to help sing “Sleeping in the Kitchen”. The two joked around, “Who are you again?”
It’s obvious that they’re having a grand old time on tour. They’re still on the road until November 21st, so go see them on tour if they’re playing near your city. Let the three singers know that they didn’t make a mistake by quitting their day job.
Addison Grace’s debut album, Diving Lessons, is out now on AWAL.
