Opening the show was Atlanta’s Lunar Vacation… which surprisingly was very good. We didn’t know what to expect from them, only having heard their cover of Wham’s “Last Christmas” (which we wrote about…, er, last Christmas).
The group, which featrued friends Grace Repasky and Maggie Geeslin (with Matteo DeLurgio on synth and Connor Dowd on drums), sounds a bit like Camera Obscura, although some might argue they sound like Grouplove, since they’ve been known for working with Daniel Gleason.
During their set, they mentioned this was their last stop of the tour… and, in fact, they “lost a band member”. They quickly recruited Minneapolis’ progressive metal band Why Not member Isaac… who spent the day learning their songs.
As for The Beths (singer and guitarist Liz Stokes, lead guitarist Jonathan Pearce, bassist Benjamin Sinclair, and drummer Tristan Deck) … it’s been a while since we last saw the band at Rock the Garden in 2019. We wrote, “Chicago Tribune called The Beths, one of the “best up-and-coming bands”, so we were really eager to catch this young New Zealand trio (Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce and Benjamin Sinclair) on tour. This is also partly because they are one of those few bands that we haven’t covered and was excited to see their first time in the area. According to guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Pearce, the band have been on a co-headlining tour with Bad Bad Hats since February 2019, so they were pretty happy to share the stage once again with the local band. The band basically played their debut Future Me Hates Me, available now from Carpark Records.”
We’ve been waiting for them to return, and was excited to see that they were coming back to celebrate The Current’s birthday… but due to restrictions of travel and COVID, the show was cancelled… but they finally appeared at the Fine Line.
The tiny venue was packed full of fans, as the group played tracks from their 2020 album Jump Rope Gazers. They even played their brand new single, “A Real Thing”… which was written especially8 for their North American tour (until it was rescheduled twice due to COVID).
Singer Liz Stokes described the song as “…a kind of anxiety dream. It's a bit muddled, a bit frantic, a bit sinister.”
The Beths’ Jump Rope Gazers is out now.
