We're really excited to see Mates of State return to the Twin Cities next Wednesday, July 1st. We previously mentioned that the band starred and sang in the the new feature film The Rumperbutts. The duo also has a new EP, You're Going to Make It (Barsuk Records), which promised to be five "hits" and no "fillers", as singer/drummer Jason Hammel noted.

Opening up the show will be twin sisters Brooke and Brit as Florida's Good Graeff and Seattle's Hey Marseilles.

It's trio night!

Chicago trio Meat Wave (Joe Gac, Chris Sutter & Ryan Wizniak) will stop by 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis next Thursday, July 2nd, on tour in support of Brother (Brace Yourself Records).

Opening up will be local Loud Nerves (we previously saw live and described as '3-man-band') and What Tyrants (who we previously mentioned was also a trio).

I've seen the videos, "Weird Al" Yankovic put on a great show. Unfortunately, his appearance at Mystic Lake Resort and Casino on Friday, July 3, is sold out. The Casino is located in Prior Lake, which is about an hour from where I live, but Weird Al would have been worth the drive.

"Weird Al" Yankovic's latest album Mandatory Fun is his first #1 album, thanks to his various viral music video campaign just prior to the album's release last July.

New Punk Band review: Loud Nerves

Last Wednesday night one of Minneapolis’ newest punk bands, Loud Nerves, debuted a 10-song set in Stevens Square’s Cinema and Civics night. The 1990 classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was shown. It’s the Square’s third such event and they’re holding one more next Wednesday the 25^th. Stevens Square Community Organization, one of the oldest running community organizations in the country,  are holding concerts followed by a movie in Stevens Square on each Wednesday of the month of June.

The 3-man-band certainly struck an amazing nerve with me as they screamed from one song to another. Although they brought a youthful punk noise that was perfectly distorted, they showed maturity with a slow riff in Sinker.

After the show I was surprised to find out that this was their first gig together. Jeremy, their drummer, kept Zabby (bass and vocals) and Matt (vocals and guitar) perfectly timed through every song. Often times you’ll find new bands either quicken or retard the beat by song’s end. Not Loud Nerves. This is a trio of seasoned musicians that are achieving their goals of putting out a “repetitive, straight forward, intentional, and jarring” sound: Everything you want in a punk band. You know that their experience goes further back than the 16 months that they’ve been practicing with each other.

I highly recommend catching Loud Nerves at either Nomad World Pub on Friday, July 18^th or Cause on Thursday July 31^st.
