With The Get Up Kids playing the Turf Club in St Paul this coming October 03, 2021, let’s take a look back at the band 10 years ago, at the defunct Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on July 10, 2011. They were just as popular now as they were a decade ago.

The Get Up Kids haven't been around for a few years, but they are NOT forgotten, as evident by the nice turnout for the band on a hot Sunday evening at the Triple Rock Social Club. And you know what that means: three bands for triple the rock.

Major Crimes

I thought the first band, Major Crimes, sounded great. They were tight, was especially impressed with the drums. As it turns out, this trio went under the name Brian Bonz and the Major Crimes (Bonz is the drummer), but what's interesting is that Bonz is not doing the vocals on stage. Instead, singing duties were left to the guitarist and bassist.

The Globes

The Globes were up next. I thought their debut Barsuk album, Future Self, was well produced, and I was glad to see they carry their spacey progressive rock sound live. As expected, they did a lot of songs from their album, complete with strange neck playing of the guitars, cowbells, and weird loops and guitar pedals.

For those who aren't familiar with The Get Up Kids, they were maybe unfairly grouped together with the emo scene of the 90s. This scene includes such hot acts like Dashboard Confessional, Thursday, Jimmy Eat World, and Saves the Day. While the band hated this tag, I believe it also help boost their rise in popularity.

What I liked about their setlist, is that they get it right: they'll sandwich new songs between old favorites, like "Woodson", etc. You can always tell which one were the old songs as everyone is singing along.

Jim Suptic told this story about how they were at Summerfest and they had started a massive "USA" chant. Hilariously the "USA" chants was repeated throughout the show.

When the last song, "Walking on a Wire", was done, the crowd went into the usual "USA" chant for the traditional encore. The true irony is that they opened up their encore with a cover of UK's Blur song "Girls and Boys". This is quite an interesting cover choice for the band, and as much as I enjoyed the cover, the song was lost on its younger audience who has probably never heard of the song and/or could care less.

The other three encore songs included two Get Up Kids favorites "Don't Hate Me" and "Ten Minutes", and between those two songs was another cover: The Replacements' "Beer For Breakfast". The 'Mats was clearly a song choice chosen for the Minneapolis show. Outro song was Lou Reed's "Perfect Day". I don't know if the outro song was a request by the band, but it seems quite fitting for this show.

The Get Up Kids' fifth studio album, There Are Rules, was released in January. Go see them on tour to welcome them back.

Grammy Award winner John Paul White (not to be confused with John Paul Jones) released his new solo album The Hurting Kind today (April 12) via Single Lock Records. The new single, “I Wish I Could Write You A Song,” premiered via CMT in celebration of the release.

White will also be kicking off a 2019 US tour.

If you’re not familiar with his live show, we caught the singer at Basilica Block Party 2017 in July and wrote, “John Paul White (better known as formerly one-half of folk duo The Civil Wars) was next, White coming out first alone, commenting “If you’re wearing a suit, then you’re warm” in the late afternoon sun…. White’s quiet and mostly sad songs seemed a little out of place on a festival’s big outdoor stage next to a highway (“that’s a first”, he quipped), but for the patient and attentive, the dividends were abundant.”

Master rock singer-songwriter-guitarist Nils Lofgren is famous for being a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, Crazy Horse, and frontman of Grin. Recently, it was announced that Lofgren will be releasing Blue With Lou, a dozen of collaborated songs with the great, late Lou Reed.

The story behind the album, according to Lofgren, is that the two wrote and worked on the music in Reed’s New York apartment. It laid to rest, until Reed called Lofgren up at 4:30am:

Reed: ‘Hey, Nils, it’s Lou Reed. I’ve been listening to the tape you sent, and I love it. I’ve been up for three days and nights straight. I haven’t slept. I’ve been working on your tape. I’ve completed 13 sets of lyrics that I love.’

Lofgren: ‘You’ve gotta be kidding me.’

Reed: ‘If you wanna get a pad and pencil, I’ll dictate them to you.’

Of course, the song remained in their private collection, until after Reed’s death in 2013, Lofgren entertained the idea of putting those recording to an album. He says, “They got left by the wayside. Years went by, and it kept nagging at me. I thought, look, Lou’s not here to deliver these lyrics. He was inspired when he did this. It would be a shame not to share it.”

This May, Nils Lofgren will kick off a US tour in support of Blue With Lou:

The girls from Miss World (Natalie Chahal) and (Laura-Mary Carter) have formed the new band Shit Girlfriend.

Their latest single is called “Dress Like Cher”, available exclusively as a splatter vinyl for Record Store Day (via PNKSLM Recordings).

In related news, Chahal released her debut LP Keeping Up With Miss World, while Blood Red Shoes released their fifth album Get Tragic on their own Jazz Life label earlier this year. We’ve seen Blood Red Shoes a few times, and their last appearance in Oct 2018, we said, “Brighton’s Blood Red Shoes opened the show, the stage completely lit in a deep green (which remained unchanged throughout their entire set), possibly due to the fact that the artwork for their forthcoming 2019 album Get Tragic is also in the same green tone. They didn’t play any of those 2019 songs, it’s really not the time to start promoting those singles, but instead concentrated on their various hit singles.”

Velvet Underground singer and songwriter Lou Reed passed away yesterday (October 27th) at the age of 71. Having heard a cover version of "White Light/White Heat" by Those Darlins, the Velvet Underground were still fresh in mind when I heard of Reed's death.

Last night at the Head and the Heart's sold-out show at First Avenue, the DJ played V.U. songs between sets and ending with "Perfect Day" after the show. This is perhaps my favorite Lou Reed song.

CNN published the news, here's an excerpt from their article:

Lou Reed, who took rock 'n' roll into dark corners as a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist, died Sunday, his publicist said. He was 71.

The publicist, Peter Noble, confirmed Reed's death but released no details. Reed had undergone a liver transplant in May, his wife, the musician/performance artist Laurie Anderson, disclosed over the summer.

Reed was a rock pioneer who went from record label songwriter to a member of the short-lived but innovative and influential Velvet Underground. The band and Reed's solo work tackled taboo topics like drug addiction, paranoia and sexual deviancy in songs that were largely spare, muscular and often saturated in feedback.

His death came as a bit of a surprise because he was still relatively active in his advanced years, even teaming up with Metallica for their Lulu album.

I think I've just had one of the best day. Ever.

First of all, my tax return came early (and I know that I'm also getting that stimulus check anytime now...) so I've been pretty fit as far as having some extra cash on hand.

With that in mind, I decided to splash out a little and dine out whenever I felt like it. So, sure, let's do breakfast drive-through at McDonald's. When I pulled up to the pay window, I was told to put away my money!

The man behind the window gave me this letter instead:

Apparently, this was a promotional thing for KTIS Radio, which, as it turns out, is a Christian radio station.

Speaking of letter, I got another letter in the mail when I got home. The letter was from Best Buy, sending me a $50 gift card for my poor choice in the high definition war by buying a HD Player addon for the Xbox 360.

I ended up using that money to buy some standard DVD :) (take that, expensive Bluray!)

I also picked up a few new CDs, including Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree, primarily for a decently priced ($17) deluxe package (includes extra DVD, handwritten lyric books, poster, postcards, etc). I am really impressed with the lyric book, it's not only handwritten, but there's random artwork by Alison. Who knew she's such a good artist?

The DVD is kind of disappointing, containing only a short documentary/interview and a video for A&E. Although, I have to say that Goldfrapp's always seem to really have an eye for good videos, and this one is no exception.

We just saw this movie (this would've been my 100th time watching it).

This movie, along with Happiness of the Katakuris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Leon the Professional, Run Lola Run, Rushmore, Super Ninjas (I love Venoms!!!!!!!!!), The Princess and the Warrior, Zatoichi #1-27, are in my little exclusive list of movies I can watch over and over again.

So anyway, there is a scene in the movie, where Ewan is going into a coma and this beautiful song is playing.

Some random fact #1: Kirsty MacColl re-recorded this song, but she turned it into a duet.

Random fact #2: Danny Boyle wanted to use Blondie's "Atomic", but the record company wanted too much money for license.  So he got the next best thing, he got Sleeper to record a cover version of it.

Random fact #3: The original Trainspotting soundtrack was so successful, that they released a second soundtrack!

Random fact #4: The drug dealer at the end of this movie, he was supposed to be the flatmate that's introduced in "Shallow Grave".
