We go to a lot of local (Minneapolis) shows, and they are generally at the usual venues (First Avenue, Varsity Theater, Cedar Cultural Center, Triple Rock Social Club, Turf Club).

All-female band Nots will be releasing We Are Nots on Goner Records this November 11th.

To support the record, the girls are touring, stopping by 'underground' venue Sh**Biscuit on November 14th in Minneapolis. Usually these venues are someone's house or basement and their address are not published online. We've attended a few of these, you just have to know someone who knows someone... good luck on finding the place.

The Icehouse (not to be confused with Australian 'Electric Blue' 80s band) actually regularly book shows, but because it's a restaurant/bar, I have noticed that many of their shows takes place really late - usually at 10pm or 11pm (although all the early events are free). We've covered a few Icehouse shows, so this is one of the regular venues.... but it's been a long time since I attended a show there.

Anyway, local Minneapolis quintet Sun Gods to Gamma Rays will be doing a CD release show for their new album A Ghost To Find, this Friday November 7th at the Icehouse in Minneapolis, with Votel.

On the corner of Lake and Hiawatha (near the Target) is Patrick's Cabaret. I've never been to the venue, but I know this area pretty well. They've recently announced the "The Minnesota Artist Residency Project" which is all about booking shows in surrounding markets (instead of just one big show). Their first artist is for 82-year-old bluesman Leo Welch from Bruce, MS.

Leo "Bud" Welch will be playing tracks from his debut album Sabougla Voices (Fat Possum/Big Legal Mess Records) which came out January 2014.

The Diverse Emerging Music Organization, or shortened to DEMO, are currently fundraising to open a venue in Minneapolis. Previously they would book local shows at the Arcadia Café in the city.

If they reach their goal of $100,000 by December 31st, they will use the 3,000 square feet facility for:

Individual music lessons taught by experienced instructors who are also working musicians, and will utilize recording technology to enrich the experience for students of all ages.

Ensemble music lessons will allow students of comparable skill levels to learn how to play with other musicians and write songs in variety of musical genres.

Camps for students will be offered most weekends, and for full weeks during the summer months. Subjects will include everything from songwriting to hip-hop to musical theater.

Community education classes will serve adult students with offerings such as: financial management for musicians, DIY tour booking, and Minnesota music history.

Our own soundstage will enable DEMO to produce a full slate of original programming related to the arts in Minnesota, such as our ’Naked Songwriter’ series and an upcoming long-form interview show hosted by Steve McClellan. The soundstage will also host regular student recitals, artist showcases, workshops, and other community events.

Minneapolis, here is a show that should be on your radar: Ben Watt at the Bryant Lake Bowl. I have been to this venue before, it is very tiny. This is your chance to catch Watt (best known for being one-half of Everything But The Girl) on this intimate first-ever solo tour in the United States. Already the original show was sold out, so Watt booked an additional show at 10 O'Clock, so you can still have a second chance.

As a special bonus, the show is accompanied by friend and album-collaborator Bernard Butler (best known for being the original guitarist for Suede)!

Expect to find Ben Watt playing songs from his critically acclaimed solo album Hendra. Also, worth noting is that Watt's second book Romany and Tom came out last month (June 10th) via Bloomsbury.

I'm pretty certain if you went to see a local Minneapolis concert this year, chances are you probably saw Prissy Clerks. I've previously mentioned them before, particularly when they were known as Total Babe (a band that featured Howler Jordan Gatesmith).

Well, Prissy Clerks just released their debut album, Bruised or Be Bruised, which Prefix Magazine described them as sounding like "Pavement and Sebadoh" while NME said they sounded like Smashing Pumpkins (circa Siamese Dream-era). So certainly, if you're into 90's alt-rock, Prissy Clerks should be on your radar.

I am told the band will likely tour in support of their album, in the meantime, you can listen to the title track on Soundcloud.com:

Minneapolis-based Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles recently performed a session for Daytrotter. Personally, when Daytrotter switched to a "you have to sign in" to download, I haven't used them since.

Sean Moeller of Daytrotter writes, "These songs, while strong and backboned, come off sometimes as delicious whimpers, the people singing them willing to take any scraps that might come their ways…."

Four of the five songs played live were taken from their latest album, Heat, which was released earlier this year.

Technically these guys are based out of Duluth… it's close enough. Duck Duck Punch described themselves as How to Destroy Angels and A-Ha.
