You might remember how we talked about the untimely death of MCA (Adam Yauch) of The Beastie Boys in 2012 ... now we’ve just learned that original band member John Berry (when they were known as The Young Aborigines) died of “frontotemporal dementia”.
Berry left the original hardcore punk group. Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz joined MCA and Mike D, and the now-trio re-invented themselves as a rap group we know as the Beastie Boys.
Other notable deaths this month (so far) is Marlene Marder of the all-girls Swiss punk band LiLiPUT at the age of 61. The group formed in Zurich in 1978 under the name Kleenex, with a line-up of Regula Sing (vocals), Marlene Marder (Marlene Marti, guitar), Klaudia Schiff (Klaudia Schifferle, bass, vocals), and Lislot Ha (Lieselotte Hafner, drums). After threat of legal action from the tissue company Kleenex, the band changed their name to LiLiPUT in 1979.
Blues/jazz singer Candye Kane also died earlier this month (May 6th) to pancreatic cancer. Kane was included in the books Rolling Stone Guide to Jazz and Blues, Elwood's Blues by Dan Aykroyd, The Blueshound Guide to Blues, Allmusic, and other blues books and periodicals. She was also a former a pornographic actress.
