The band will stop at the Varsity Theater .... Bowling for Soup Before the punk band leave for the UK to play with Bowling for Soup, they'll be doing some US dates. All dates with (*) are with Prima Donna..... The Aquabats As for The Aquabats, if you’re a fan of the 60s Batman television series, you’ve probably heard of the band. They often perform with comedy bits and they wear costumes on stage… which perhaps inspired our favorite Peelander-Z to emulate their style......

Tri-Headlining billing of Less Than Jake, Bowling For Soup and The Aquabats, is heading to First Avenue this July 7th.

Ska band Less Than Jake is celebrating over 30 years of music, and continues to release Silver Linings, their new LP from Pure Noise label.

Meanwhile, Bowling for Soup and the Aquabats are both celebrating their 28th year.

Darkest Hour will be playing their 2007 milestone album Deliver Us in its entirety for the first time ever for this 2022 tour.

Following the completion of the Deliver Us USA Tour 2022 and their subsequent appearance at Blue Ridge Rock Fest, Darkest Hour will head to the studio to produce and record their tenth studio album. The LP will be self-funded via Darkest Hour’s Patreon, and supporters will “have our eternal gratitude along with being the first ones to hear or receive this album, so subscribe to help and get hooked up!” comments the band.

Joining the band will be Zoa and Cobra Czar.

The Cult

The Cult is back, this time they are bringing Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Zola Jesus on tour with them, as part of their “We Own the Night” tour.

We last saw The Cult in Aug 2013 and wrote, “As expected, The Cult played their Electric album in its entirety - starting off with the sing-along chorus of "Wild Flower". The great energy between the two original two original band members, singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy is great to watch - that is until Astbury seem visibly and vocally upset at the chatters in front and then his mic not carrying his vocals. It was all resolved, but for a moment, you thought he was going to smash his mic out of anger.”

We last saw Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in Feb 2018 and said, “Out of the darkness and fog, there is still light… and noise, as again evidenced by the sonic barrage that is still Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, continuing to bring their unapologetic blend of no-holds rock to audiences everywhere after two decades.”

We last saw Zola Jesus in Feb 2015 and mentioned, “A darker version of Florence and the Machine is the typical quick to judge label on Zola Jesus. There is so much variety and dynamic to her songs no one should be quick to make comparisons because she is so unique. Her voice carries strong to an almost London Grammar-type level but has this obscure electronic trance that hits out of nowhere along with and incredible brass sound from the trombone.”

Zola Jesus’ forthcoming album Arkhon is due for release on June 24th via Sacred Bones Records.

This The Airborne Toxic Event Minneapolis show was originally scheduled in 16 April 2022… but due to COVID, the band had to reschedule the show to July 8th.

Luckily, we did catch the band in Kansas City, in March 2022 and wrote, “Kansas City had not seen The Airborne Toxic Event live since 2015 (and for us even longer- a 2013 show in Minneapolis), though the pandemic has had a funny way of making things seem not as long ago. So, with everyone in the room looking forward to their 110-minute headlining set, they did not disappoint the many still-loyal fans, singing along to their every lyric.”

Once again, Mondo Cozmo set to open.

Fall is typically one of the busiest times to see live shows, Even with health protocols, the season is getting busier, leading into Rocktober, Vu from W♥M’s favorite month!

In the Kansas City / Lawrence, KS area, several postponements and a cancellation or two (see below) and Simple Plan recently dropped out of the New Found Glory show, replaced by Less Than Jake.

 

Similarly, Liz Phair dropped off the Alanis Morissette/Garbage bill, but has been replaced with Cat Power (who can be brilliant or puzzling, depending on the night). Please check with the venue and artist beforehand, for any health restrictions or last-minute changes.

Last month in the KC area was filled with live highlights – Foo Fighters serenading protesters on a flatbed truck, Wilco were not able to play outdoors due to weather so turned on a live webstream to give everyone a free backstage concert, and KC’s own Waxahatchee began her tour to end last month with a sold-out show, and help from partner Kevin Morby. 

Not sure how Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real and The Allman Betts Band shows got scheduled the same night (there is definite audience crossover), classic stalwarts Kansas will play a nearby homecoming show, and country fans will get to see Little Big Town up close, opting for two theater shows instead of one big arena gig.

Swedish singer-songwriter González(who we've seen solo and w/ Junip) has a new single "Swing" out now, and like Wainwright deserves your attention live, so hope for no audience chatter.

One of Willie Nelson’s sons and his band has very much come into his own, after backing Neil Young and others for so long, while cultivating their own career and recordings.  The latest is A Few Stars Apart (on Fantasy Records) released in June, but fans know the live element is where the band really shines. Their highly successful tour continues, in support of last year’s Dreamland (on Universal Music) and held over from its beginning instantly sold-out gigs in small clubs (their March 2020 show at recordBar in KC was one of our last shows before pandemic lockdown), and are now playing to much larger, proper-size audiences. “Heat Waves” remains on heavy airplay and the song we couldn’t get out of our head for over a year now. 

Be sure to show up early for opener binki, a NYC-based genre-blending musician born to Kenyan immigrants, whose debut EP, Motor Function (on FADER label) with single “Invisible Fence” just dropped last month.

The buzzing Canadian DIY duo released their debut album Bummer, in June (on Thirty Tigers) a title we can all relate to after the last eighteen months(!), with lead track “Victoria Park” of which vocalist Luke Gruntz says, “It's our thesis, our first impression. The proverbial icebreaker. It's named after a real Victoria Park here in Cobourg, Ontario”.  Having already played Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Reading/Leeds Festivals, this is a chance to see them up close. 

Wednesday September 29

Kevin Gates, Uptown Theater, $45
A major playa in the hip-hop game, Baton Rouge native Gates has almost twenty mixtapes to his name and two previous albums, both of which went Top Five.  The KHAZA Tour also features openers DDG and Gang51e June and expect a mix of previous bangers, alongside a taste of the new album to come.

We’ve covered Mt. Joy previously (here), most memorably when the band joined The Lone Bellow on stage to cover Tom Petty and released their second full-length, Rearrange Us, last June during the pandemic. 

Of course, we love Trampled by Turtles as well, the Northern Minnesota band’s short-lived Palomino Festival(here) was one of our annual favorites to cover.

Future Islands, Liberty Hall Lawrence. $26-$30
The Baltimore band with a known reputation for their live shows is returning, in support of last October’s As Long As You Are (on 4AD), their sixth release.  Vocalist Samuel Herring is mesmerizing to watch and the Calling Out in Space Tour maybe references all the billionaires in rockets or maybe the 59-dates the band is playing, some with Modest Mouse and Hinds in Europe and the UK, following the North American dates.

Nite Jewel is currently touring in support of Real High. She’ll be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on Tuesday.

She first came to our attention in 2012 and wrote, “Nite Jewel is the alias of Ramona Gonzalez, currently based out of California. She is currently signed to Secretly Canadian ... Nite Jewel's album One Second of Love came out earlier this month. The lead single and video for "One Second of Love" looks like a scene from some 70s Satan movie. The video is creepy and scary, and had a bit of humor (if you stay until the end for the censored flash).”

Fans should also look for Real Low (Gloriette Records), a collection of B-sides from that record.

Ska/punk trio Sublime dominated the radio airways in 1997 with such hits as ‘What I Got’ and ‘Santeria’ from their third self-titled album... They were the hottest band on the planet, but bittersweet as their singer/guitarist Bradley Nowell had died two months earlier to heroin overdose.

The surviving band members reformed the band with new singer (and Sublime fan) Rome Ramirez in 2009. They’re called Sublime With Rome in the U.S. for legal reasons (but they’re known as Sublime to the rest of the world). Expect to hear songs from Sublime With Rome’s albums (Yours Truly and Sirens), as well as the hits from the Sublime 1996 album, at the upcoming First Avenue show on Wednesday. This is a rare opportunity to see the trio on a non-festival circuit or large arena.

Less Than Jake to open. The band was previously in town in February 2017.

In The Valley Below (husband & wife duo Angela Gail and Jeffrey Jacob) will be at the Turf Club in St Paul this Wednesday, in support of their new EP Elephant, which came out earlier this week (July 14th). The record was the follow-up to 2014’s The Belt, and was recorded in the basement studio of their new home in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Flagship to open. We previously saw this Charlotte band in October 2015 and wrote, “Flagship had a lonely highway fringed with darkness sound enhanced by Daniel Lanois/Brian Eno type atmospherics in promotion of their eponymous debut full-length. The band connected with many in the audience, even playing the requested 'I Want You' even though singer Drake Margolnick confessed the band was tired, having just come from Charlotte and an ex-member's wedding, the day before.”

We previously caught Guided By Voices’ guitarist Tobin Sprout in Athens, Georgia on May 19, 2017, which we wrote, “The rooftop of the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA was packed to the gills on May 19th to partake in Tobin Sprout’s laid back performance and Elf Power’s rowdy one. A friend of mine even drove from Indiana to see the show. It was a regular townie reunion.”

Now Sprout is on his way to Minneapolis to play his new The Universe And Me (Burger Records)... plus some surprisingly GBV songs.

Elephant Six artists Elf Power will open, but we feel this is more of a co-headliner situation, as both bands could easily headline the 7th Street Entry stage. Elf Power’s Twitching in Time is out now on Orange Twin.

The alt-feel-good Pepper and ska band Less Than Jake has joined forces for a national co-headline tour this year.

The 30+ shows launched earlier this January in Dallas, and will make their way to Minneapolis’ historic First Avenue venue next Monday.

Pepper’s groove machine Yesod Williams exclaims, “Less Than Jake is the gasoline to our burning blaze of fun!!! We are so filled with gratitude to be attacking the U.S. with some of the best humans to ever grace the bunks of a tour bus!!!” Less than Jake’s drummer Vinnie Fiorello adds, “Touring with Pepper means only one thing, having a great time. Selena Gomez is playing the Target Center in Minneapolis this Thursday.

When not appearing in films like "Spring Breakers" and "Getaway" (with Ethan Hawke), Gomez is currently in the middle of a tour with her band, Selena Gomez and the Scene. The full band (singer Selena Gomez, bassist Joey Clement, drummer Greg Garman, keyboardist Dane Forrest, and guitarist Drew Taubenfeld) was previously "on hiatus" since 2012, possibly due to Gomez's very busy schedule...

When Cults originally booked their show in 2012 at the Fine Line, it immediately sold out - so the band got an upgrade to a larger-capacity show at First Avenue. Even at last year, I noticed how much buzz the band had, particularly when I saw them in Canada and they were the belle of the ball.

Anyway, when we saw them as headliner, they basically played every song known to them, plus throwing in a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows". So, when Cults come back to Minneapolis November 22nd, expect them to play new songs from their Static album, which was recently released (October 15th) on Columbia Records.

Opening for all November U.S. dates will be Mood Rings, the Atlanta-based five-piece, with a new album called VPI Harmony .

The main room too big for you? No problem, taking place next door is First Ave's smaller room, the 7th Street Entry. That November 22nd will feature Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene, and Escondido.

Opening up will be Dinosaur Bones, a band that we previously mentioned was a Toronto indie rock band, out touring in support of their sophomore album, Shaky Dream (Dine Alone Records).

As for Brendan Canning, he's also on his second solo release, it's called You Gots 2 Chill (SQE Music).
