Shortly after being disappointed at the Google Nest Hub Max in last week (particularly the low resolution of the screen and inability to use Nest’s camera because I had a G Suite Account), I decided to see what their competitor, Lenovo was up to - and was very excited to see that they will be releasing the Lenovo Smart Frame!

I’ll explain why I’m so excited, but first let me do a quick round up of my ownership of digital photo frames. What I own so far:

Lenovo Smart Display 10”

Lenovo Smart Display 8” (I own two of these)

Google Nest Hub Max

Lenovo Smart Tab M10 (with Amazon Echo Show).

Amazon Echo Show (1st Generation)

Kodak EasyShare 7” Digital Photo Frame

I’m only using the Lenovo and Google displays at the moment. The ones I’m not using, I’ll further explain why they aren’t very good. The Kodak frame simply sucked - the display is terrible and it’s not internet connected. I bought it under clearance for $17, and still regret paying that much for this none-useful device. The Amazon devices, at first, I was excited. However, soon after using them, I realized every little thing I wanted, Amazon wanted me to pay money to use (including the ability to display my personal photos)… which I refuse to pay a reoccurring fee just to view my photos.

Why I am so excited about the Lenovo Smart Frame is that I’m really interested in a larger photo frame, and this 21” display would eclipse my 10” screens. It’s internet-connected and will work with my existing Google Photos, so I don’t have to do any work in setting up images for the frame. They also stressed that the display will automatically adjust the brightness and colors of your photos / art to match the ambient light in your room. This is the key, since you don’t want a bright display when you turn off the lights. My existing Lenovo smart displays already does this, and I think it’s wonderful (when you turn off the lights the screen is very dim).

There’s speakers and ability to use touchless controls - so I am thinking they might incorporate music or video control playback… which is interesting, but I’m not sure if I would be interested in those features (but obviously would still be nice if they included it out of the box). The other feature I would just like to see is the local temperature and clock, even though you don’t see them on the website. Maybe just include an option for that, for those that wants it.

The retail price for the Smart Frame will be $299, however, if you support or pre-order through IndieGoGo, you can get it for $150… which I think is a much fairer and more attractive price. They took down the date, but the pending date I saw was August 2020.

When I first experimented with the “Smart Display” market, I started with Amazon Echo Show… mostly because it was first to market and the pricing was attractive with flash sales.

At first, it was great… but as I used it more and more, I started to see its limitation. I soon realized that Amazon just basically wanted me to pay for all of its services. For example, if I wanted to listen music, I would have to pay its Amazon Music subscription. If I wanted to display my photos (to use the Echo Show as a photo frame), I would have to pay for Amazon Drive (which comes with a Photo service). Want to watch movies? Amazon Prime, etc. It’s that classic razer blade strategy - get them in with a cheap product, but sell them reoccurring blades or services.

When the Lenovo Smart Display was announced, I quickly jumped ship. Switching over to Lenovo meant that we had to become a Google home, as everything is built around the Google Home Hub application. If you don’t mind giving Google your information, you can use many of their services - for free. That’s the attractive thing, it’s mostly free.

Using Google Music, I can stream all my music on the Smart Display. Using Google Photos, I can setup my display as a digital photo frame. It is awesome… and for the most part, they are all free services.

I love the Lenovo Smart Displays, I currently own three of them (one 10” and two 8”). I was eagerly looking forward to buying larger displays or a better redesign… but unfortunately the new redesigned is a smaller version: a 7” display.

As stores like Best Buy are phasing out the Lenovo Smart Displays in favor of Google Nest Hub (7”) and the Google Nest Hub Max (10”), I decided to get a Hub Max on sale. The Nest Hub is a re-branding from Google Home Hub.

The key differences (and improvements) in the Nest Hub 10” vs Lenovo Smart Display 10” is that the audio is a million times better thanks to its 3” subwoofer. The Nest Hub also features a better microphone to hear over distance and has an “ultrasound sensing” technology (to recognize the tiniest “hey google”).

If you have a Nest account, you can use the Nest Hub to spy, I mean view your room, as a security camera. Unfortunately, it does not work if you have a G Suite Account. You need a raw Gmail account… so this feature is useless to me.

There’s also face recognition, to display your personal calendar, but because I’m the only user in the household, this feature is somewhat useless to me.

Now, for the main reason why I am going to not recommend the Google Nest Hub Max: the screen is simply terrible. It is only 1280 x 800 pixels. You might think, oh that’s not so bad. But when you were going from an HD display from the Lenovo 10” at 1920 x 1200 pixels, you can clearly see the differences. The Lenovo displays are amazingly better, thanks to the high resolution, but also deeper blacks.

The final nail against Google is its price. The Nest Hub Max retails for $229, while you can get the Lenovo Smart Display 10” for around $149. Personally speaking, based on my own needs (since many of Nest’s features doesn’t work for me), I would just go with the cheaper (and better) Lenovo Smart Display 10”.

The Lenovo Smart Display does almost everything that the Google Nest Hub Max does, and despite a worst speaker system, I can live with that over a better screen.

P.S. I tried to use the Google Nest Hub Max as my main display on my desk for a few hours, but staring at that awful screen, I simply had to swap it back to my original Lenovo Smart Display.

There are some big news coming from major online retailer giant Amazon.

The first is that Google and Amazon have made up and play nice… so YouTube will once again be available on Amazon’s devices, such as The Echo and Fire Stick.

Second is that Amazon will start making their Amazon Music streaming service available to non-Prime users, but with advertisements, according to Engadget. This would make sense, considering that you can already stream Spotify (with ads) on Amazon’s speakers.

Of course, the free service will be limited, as Amazon still wants you to pay for their full Music service, with access to more than 50 million songs.

Also, speaking of Amazon Music, it was announced yesterday that Metric and Big Data (artist/producer Alan Wilkis) have teamed up to release an Amazon Original Remix of “Risk.” You can only listen (or purchase) only on Amazon Music.

Personally speaking, the free Amazon Music is a little too late, as I’ve actually gone all-in with Google’s devices (such as the Lenovo’s Smart Display) as they offer the ability to upload music you own via Google Play. What is better about this, is that you may own a lot of music that is simply not available on any streaming platform - such as live recordings or bootlegs or obscure singles and B-Sides.

UPDATE: Not to be outdone by Amazon, Google also allowed a free version of their YouTube Music service available on their speakers and Smart Display. Go here for the instructions to turn on the feature.

After living with the Amazon’s Echo Show for seven months, and realizing its limitation (the fact that Amazon wants to sell you every service that should be free - like displaying your photos or playing your music), it was time I moved away from Alexa and to Google Assistant via Lenovo Smart Display (10” version).

So, why would you buy one over the other? Despite being much cheaper to buy, you end up paying more if you decide to go the Amazon route. If you own an Echo Show, you might end up buying a subscription to Amazon Music ($8 a month), a subscription to Amazon Drive (for your photos at $11.99 a year), a subscription to Amazon Prime (for watching some videos at $99 or more a year). As you can see, it can add up.

With Lenovo Smart Display, it’s pretty much free. If you want music, you can upload all your MP3s to Google Music and access them via the Smart Display. Of course, if you prefer, you can subscribe to Google Music, YouTube Music, Pandora, Deezer, or Spotify. You can access your movies via YouTube (which is not available on Amazon). You can access all your photos via the free Google Photos service.

To me, it’s really hard to argue free over paying for subscriptions, however, I can understand why some users won’t mind paying for ease of use.

Setting up the Smart Display was really hard. You have to download Google Home and sign in using a Google account. If you have a custom G-Suite Account, it won’t work unless you tweak the privacy settings (they should all work except for Google Calendar). If you sign in using different Google accounts on Google Home, it won’t work.

To get Google’s Duo to work, you must associate the app with your phone number and sign in using the same account that you use for Google Home (again, multiple accounts may cause problems).

If you have problems, you can’t simply delete and re-add in the software - you basically have to factory reset and start over from the beginning. Don’t feel bad, but I had to factory reset the display three or four times, to get everything to work. It definitely didn’t feel like the product was ready for primetime. It’s understandable, as the Smart Display is the very first of its kind.

Once you get it up and running, it’s very similar to the Echo Show. Everything the Echo can do, the Smart Display can do a little better.

With a bigger, beautiful HD screen, a beautiful bamboo-back design, and audio, it blows away the Echo Show. Fear not, Amazon will be coming back with a second generation Echo Show that promises to better compete with the Smart Display.
