Acclaimed LA-based singer-songwriter Katelyn Tarver is on her “Compliments Only” tour… according to Tarver, her first “real” tour (as headliner). We mentioned that she previously toured with other groups, such as Johnnyswim in 2021.
Rosie Darling was originally listed as support act, but unfortunately was not feeling well on this Saturday night. At the eleventh hour, Julia Eubanks of Creeping Charlie stepped in to open the show.
We last saw Creeping Charlie in Dec 2022 and wrote, “Creeping Charlie takes its inspiration from bands like Mazzy Star and Built to Spill but you could hear Veruca Salt and other female alternative rock bands of the 90’s in the guitar driven and heavy bass playing underneath Julia’s airy lyrics unless she was screaming into the microphone with songs like “Gtfo”. Like the plant Creeping Charlie has a lot of energy and curiosity and desire to expand their musical sound. They can be seen again on January 20th, 2023 at the main room of First Ave in a show billed: Best new bands of 2022. Definitely worth a visit!”
While they were loud and screaming with a full band, Julia, by herself, seemed almost shy… especially asking the audience to help her sing out “It Doesn’t Hurt Like That Anymore”.
When re-tuning her guitar for the “loud” song “Paperdoll”, Julia, trying to come up with some banter, mentioned how she saw Leith Ross in June 2023 and admired how they dealt with vamping for time. According to Julia, Ross would solicit questions written on paper in a box, and would answer those questions while tuning their guitars. “They’re so smart, I’m not!,” she concluded.
Katelyn Tarver is on her first headlining “Compliments Only” tour. She had a lot of fun digging through her EP and old songs, and her forthcoming sophomore 2024 album, to put together her setlist. Even though it’s her first major tour, she seemed like an old pro at this. And even if things aren’t exactly going according to plan, Tarver is having fun.
In the middle of her set, she decided to do a mini-solo set (meaning her drummer and guitarist would take a nice 20-min break backstage). Starting with her quiet piano-driven song “Sh** Happens”, followed by “Love Alone”, and a cover of Paramore’s “The Only Exception”, and ending with “Love Me Again”.
Look for Tarver to support Jack Gray on the UK tour in November.
