Excerpt By the Numbers: DFA 1979, 100 gecs, Logic1000: American duo 100 Gecs (stylized as 100 gecs) consists of Dylan Brady and Laura Les. Since their debut album 1000 Gecs in 2019, the band have grown in popularity, particularly in the video game Minecraft. During the pandemic, the duo released 1000 Gecs and the Tree of Clues, which rework their debut album, but features callaborations with various stars, such as Fall Out Boy and Charlie XCX. According to their press release, they’ve sold out every show they’ve ever played… so expect sold out, or at least heavily attended shows in this forthcoming North American 10,000 gecs Tour.

We just saw him open for Glass Animals in September 22 and said, “On stage (this night dressed in a Dr. Seuss t-shirt and dollar store black cape), binki was refreshingly not afraid to have fun, or take himself too seriously, like while starting to introduce his band (that wasn’t there- he played to all backing tracks) and during closing single, “Heybb!”, he did the magic trick of having an “endless rainbow scarf” come out of his mouth, pretending to stumble about as he sang the song’s chorus, “I’m stressed, you got me feelin’ nauseous”.”

I stumbled into a show about a year and a half ago (at the 7th Street Entry in July 2015). It was opened up by this band called LANY. I had never heard of them before that night but, after seeing them live, I just couldn't get them out of my head. I missed LANY one time in between that show in July of 2015 and last night and it seems like everything has changed for these guys in the best way possible.

The show at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on November 5th was completely sold out. Like sold out weeks ago. My mind was blown, the other time I saw them, they were opening up for Zella Day and, although that show was also sold out, it wasn't because of LANY. Last night was sold out because of LANY and it gave me butterflies to see such a deserving band finally get what they deserve.

Transviolet

Opening the show last night was Transviolet. These guys, fronted by Sarah McTaggart, weren't greeted like an opening act. They were greeted as if they were just as important as the headliner and, they may be on the same level as LANY sooner rather than later.

McTaggart has a voice worthy of a pop start but the attitude worthy of a rock star. With only an EP under their belt, Transviolet seems to have everything to prove but within the first song, they had proven everything they needed to me and have already made their way into my daily playlist.

Although you could feel the spirit of David Bowie flowing through the set with the way the four members acted and the attitude that came off the stage, Transviolet has a sound all of their own. With vocals a bit like Lorde and music a bit like Halsey, these guys take the best elements of some of the best, young, female fronted acts and make it their own. They make it something that is impossible to ignore when listening to it live.

LANY seemed to be running a bit behind last night and ended up taking the stage about fifteen minutes late but with the reaction of the crowd, it didn't seem to upset anyone. The audience started chanting "LANY. LANY. LANY." and every time there was a break in the house music, the chant would turn into a roar of applause and screaming only to be greeted by yet another song that was not LANY.

Finally, the house lights went down, the house music faded away and it was time for LANY. Before the band took the stage, three giant screens that occupied the back of the stage were lit up with video of Whitney Houston singing the national anthem. It seemed strange and bizarre to me but the rest of the crowd had started singing along. Then, as soon as the fighter jets were shown flying over Whitney Houston, LANY took the stage and the crowd went absolutely wild.

When you see singer Paul Jason Klein, the deafening screeches from the young females in the crowd make sense. He looks like a model straight off the runway and, when he opens his voice, he sounds too good to be true. His sultry voice is truly unique in the way he goes from high to low notes, all the while, keeping a smooth characteristic to it. Klein's voice matched with the low key drums, keys, and guitar sounds leave you with the most perfect indie, almost dream-pop, sound you could ask for.

Throughout the fifteen song set, the music was almost drowned out by the screeching girls in the crowd every time Klein would lean into the sold out crowd. The pushing and shoving happening towards the front of the crowd was intense and security guards struggled to get cups of water to the first couple rows of kids as to prevent overheating (it is un-seasonably warm up here in Minnesota). I was truly shocked to see such a response for this band that, just a year and a half ago, was playing in front of a sold out crowd but was ignored for the most part.

LANY (pronounced Lay-Nee, as in L.A. and N.Y.) is back in Minneapolis this Saturday, November 5th. We’ve been seeing this band multiple times and every time we see them, their fanbase double! It’s amazing how popular they are in Minneapolis, and if you look around in the audience, you’ll see so many signs that reads “ILYSB”.

The band’s new EP Kinda is out now.

Transviolet to open. We caught the pop band in October 2015 and produced one of our favorite photos of that month.

Rising alt-pop duo Oh Wonder’s first major US tour in support of their self-titled album took them to First Avenue in Minneapolis last Friday (June 3rd).

LANY

Opening up the show was Los Angeles’ LANY (which stands for “Los Angeles, New York”). We’ve previously seen the popular trio (Paul Klein, Jake Goss, and Les Priest) with Zella Day in 2015: “People were singing along to every word and swaying back and forth to every note. The girls in the crowd were swooning over the singer, who may as well have been a model.”

LANY’s fanbase has doubled since their previous appearance. These young, dedicated female fans took over the dance floor in front, armed with custom signs (most of them reading “ILYSB”, standing for “I Love You So Bad”, and directed towards singer Klein).

They played most of their popular, early singles (‘Made in Hollywood’, ‘4ever!’) to their latest ‘Where The Hell Are My Friends’, which started their 35-min set. Every songs were sung back from the fans in front, and it’s clear to the trio that they need to come back to Minneapolis. Klein said that they’ve been all over the world on their tour, but Minneapolis was always the best.

ILYSB

Highlight of the show was during the telephone intro to ‘ILYSB’, Klein grabbed a homemade sign from the audience and held it up during the performance. After the song, and hearing the screams, Klein jokingly asked if the audience, “Could you guys come back tomorrow?”

Oh Wonder

Oh Wonder has been selling out most of the more populated cities on their first U.S.A. tour, and it’s a good indication that they may have to come back at bigger venues. If you were lucky enough to have caught them at the incredibly packed show last Friday, you’ll realized that this is probably the smallest place they’ll play in their career.

There were a lot of people there interested in checking out the duo: Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West (for their live shows, they’re joined on stage by Ethan on bass and Frank on drums). Their music is downbeat, slow-groove, R&B, alt-pop songs, sounding a little like their contemporaries London Grammar or Haelos.

Setlist

This was Oh Wonder’s first time in Minneapolis, and they were incredibly pleased at the turn out and also the historic nature of the venue (it is often associated with Prince as the venue was used often in the film Purple Rain).

Of course, with only one album under their belt, the band basically played their entire album live. Hits like ‘Lose It’ were done early in the set, Unforgotten theme song ‘All We Do’ played mid-set, and saving new single ‘Plans’ for the encore.

London-based alt-pop Oh Wonder is headlining First Avenue’s mainroom next Friday, June 3rd. The duo (Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West) has already sold out major cities, such as London, Paris, and Los Angeles... so check them out now before they get much bigger.

Oh Wonder’s self-titled debut album is out now via Island, Republic, and Caroline International.

Opening will be Los Angeles’ Lany (stylized as LANY, pronounced ‘lay-nee’). We previously caught the trio (Paul Klein, Les Priest and Jake Goss) in July 2015 and wrote, “I was surprised by the amount of people that knew who these guys were. People were singing along to every word and swaying back and forth to every note. The girls in the crowd were swooning over the singer, who may as well have been a model.”

Expect some of those sing-along fans to be at this Friday’s show.

Toronto’s Pup (stylized as PUP) is headlining the 7th Street Entry next Friday, June 3rd, in support of their sophomore album The Dream Is Over, available tomorrow, May 27, 2016, via SideOneDummy.

Brooklyn grunge-pop band Charly Bliss will open the show; their latest single “Ruby” just came out May 16, 2016. Eva Hendricks is the band's charismatic singer, which The A.V. Club described as “a laboratory fusion of Eddie Vedder and a punk-rock cheerleader”. We previously caught the young band in 2015 and wrote, “It's hard not to like the band, especially seeing singer Eva get really excited about playing their songs.”

Rozwell Kid is also on the bill.

I had never heard of either of the acts playing. I had no expectations and honestly, I kind of wanted to stay home and just soak in some more aloe (my sunburn from Warped Tour on Sunday is still ridiculously painful). Driving past 7th Street Entry, on my way to the parking ramp, I was shocked to see the line that stretched for half of the block. I would like to think I'm pretty in tune with what's popular and what not, regardless of what genre, but this completely caught me off guard. Here I was thinking that it would just be me and a handful of people at this show. Surprisingly enough, when I got up to there door there was a "Sold Out" sign swinging in the wind. How is this a sold out show?! I've never even heard of Zella Day or the opener, Lany. Am I really that far behind the times? I had a feeling I was a bit out of my element when I walked in and was surrounded by college girls. In my world, that's a bad sign. I'd rather be surrounded by a bunch of thirty something year old guys with their beer bellies hanging out.The fact that I was surrounded by a bunch of glammed up women in high heels just means that this was more of a social gathering instead of a concert. Man, was I wrong. Lany Lany was the opening act. They are a three piece synth-pop band from Los Angeles with catchy, yet dreamy, pop songs. There were songs where I almost fell asleep standing up just due to the dreaminess and the pure calmness of music. Then, right when my eyes were too heavy for me to keep open, and I was ready to lay down on the bench in the back of the venue, they would play an upbeat song that you couldn't help but move around to. I was surprised by the amount of people that knew who these guys were. People were singing along to every word and swaying back and forth to every note. The girls in the crowd were swooning over the singer, who may as well have been a model. The boyfriends in the crowd seemed annoyed but got their revenge as soon as Zella came onto the stage. Zella Day is a force to be reckoned with. Her voice is more powerful than the emotional screamers and growlers that I'm typically listening to. For such a petite girl, Zella has one of the biggest voices I have heard in a while and it was refreshing even though it was not my cup of tea. Her show was not the most exciting show I have ever seen and the crowd was pretty tame for my taste (my blistered sunburn was so thankful for that). That being said, there was something about her that kept me at that show instead of going home after a song or two like I had planned on. Everything about Zella seemed calm, soft spoken, almost shy until she would open her mouth and you would hear that big voice. That's when it went from an American Idol audition to a concert. It was Lana Del Rey meets Janis Joplin's drug habit (but only taking the good, happy pills). It was the music that would be on stage at a modern day Woodstock. You could almost smell the patchouli incense coming out of the guitars but you could also hear the passion and the rock influences in the music. Zella Day is a force to be reckoned with The way she had the crowd going was amazing. Usually, I'm one of the people hanging onto every word being sung while people look at me like I'm crazy. Last night, the roles were reversed. I didn't know a single song, let alone a single word but everyone else in the crowd did. It's such a weird sensation to be on that side of it. I almost felt like I wasn't worthy enough to be there. It was a sold out show and the constant stream of people trying to get in the door only to be turned away, would have killed for my ticket. Here I was, completely out of my element, hogging that one ticket that could have gone to a true fan. But maybe that's better use of a ticket because both Zella Day and Lany just earned a new fan that will definitely go see them next time they are in town. We previously caught singer/songerwriter Lee DeWyze with Toad the Wet Sprocket in 2013, which John wrote, "Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze entertained with a 40 min. opening set promoting his latest, Frames (Vanguard Records). New songs like ‘Silver Lining’ and ‘Fight’ were well received, and the audience was mostly receptive to his humble and honest songwriting."

DeWyze will be at the Loring Pasta Bar (right next to the Varsity Theater) next Wednesday, July 29th.
