New York City-based trio Wet is touring in support of their new EP Letter Blue (Reprise), out now via AWAL. The 5-track project exists in the same sonic universe as their recently released album Letter Blue, which dropped at the end of last year and the remix EP for Letter Blue released last month, which features reimagined versions of Letter Blue tracks made in collaboration with Dijon, Branchez, stud1nt and Noah Breakfast.

We caught the band in Mar 2019 and wrote, “As normal, earlier hit singles like “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl” drew the biggest reaction from the crowd. If you enjoy xx and London Grammar, you’ll need to get onboard with Wet and see what you’re missing.”

It looks like 2/3 of Throwing Muses will be in town at the Turf Club in St Paul on June 13. As you know, originally singer/songwriter Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly (who went on to form The Breeders and Belly), so there’s still a lot of love for Throwing Muses.

Fred Abong replaced the original bassist of Throwing Muses in 1990, so everyone is related!

Expect Hersh to crash on Abong’s set or vice-versa.

We caught Kristin Hersh during a weird book/concert tour in May 2013 and wrote, “Anyway, in-between her songs, she read excerpts from her memoir, Rat Girl. I was wrong before, apparently Rat Girl, is basically Hersh's teenage diary, right before recording their first record. It's interesting to hear these true "adult" stories from a teenager.”

We love British bands, so we’re very excited to see that Liverpool rock band Crawlers will be headlining the 7th Street Entry this June 14.

If you haven’t kept up, the young band, featuring Holly Minto (vocals and trumpet), Amy Woodall (lead guitar), Liv Kettle (bass guitar) and Harry Breen (drums), signed to Polydor Records in January 2022, and they’ve released a new single “I Can’t Drive” and hit single “Come Over (Again)” (over 24 million streams on Spotify).

We love Hot Chip and it’s good to see that the British synth/electronic rockers have sold out First Avenue’s mainroom this Saturday, September 14th… which is not a surprise, considering they also sold out all the previous appearances.

We caught the band in May 2015 and wrote, “What can I say about Hot Chip? They continue to amaze me with their music. Their sixth album Why Make Sense? (which came out May 18th via Domino Recording) is probably their best album to date. We got to hear it live on their hour plus set, included "Huarache Lights", "Easy To Get", "Started Right", "Cry For You", "Need You Now", and "Why Make Sense?"”

They are bringing along unfriendly named band Holy F***.

Influential trip-hop legends, Massive Attack will be making a rare Minnesota appearance this Tuesday, September 10th. Of course, the popular group sold out the Palace Theatre… so maybe you can catch them next time.

We saw the group when they first came to the area in May 2016 and said, “The show started out with Pinegrove. It was their first time ever to play in Minnesota but you wouldn't have thought that by the percentage of the crowd that was singing along to all of their songs. Honestly, I had never heard of them before. Their music is much calmer than I typically like but it was so unique that I couldn't help but fall in love.”

Coming up next week is the “An Evening With Kristin Hersh & Grant Lee Phillips”, starring Grant-Lee Phillips (formerly of Grant Lee Buffalo) and Kristin Hersh (formerly of Throwing Muses).

We’re fairly excited about the team-up of these 90’s musicians, particularly with Hersh reuniting with former Throwing Muses bandmate (and step-sister) Tanya Donelly. Unfortunately the only Donelly appearance will be in Boston... but fear not, Donelly and her band Belly will be in Minneapolis in Rocktober 2018 (read more about it on news.weheartmusic.com).

As for Nashville’s Grant-Lee Phillips, his 9th solo album Widdershins is out now on Yep Roc Records. Phillips explained the title, “Widdershins…it’s an old word. Moving counterclockwise, spiraling backwards. The album begs the question, in what direction are we moving?”

Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant has reunited for their annual popular Christmas tour. This year, the two will be bringing The Voice winner Jordan Smith.

Smith and Grant also wants to raise awareness for “Operation Christmas Child”, a charity known for distributing over 135 million shoeboxes of Christmas gifts to children in need in 150 countries.

“Christmas is my favorite time of year, and performing these holiday shows each November and December is a major highlight for me,” Grant adds. “I’m thrilled to share the stage with Michael and Jordan, and I’m so glad some new audiences will be able to join in the Christmas spirit with us this year. I can’t wait!”

Nineties band Belly (not to be confused with Canadian Hip Hop artist Belly) has reunited and will be headlining First Avenue’s mainroom this Sunday, September 18th. This is their last show for 2016, the night before they will play the Vic Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.

If you’re not familiar with Belly, they formed in 1991 (alongside with The Breeders) when singer Tanya Donelly left Throwing Muses. Throwing Muses continued on with singer Kristin Hersh (who also enjoyed a solo career).

Belly’s single ‘Feed the Tree’ became a hit for the band, and by 1993, their debut album Star went Gold.

Although we never saw Belly when they were together, we did manage to see Tanya Donelly in 2002 when she was on tour for Beautysleep. Personal anecdote, but she had brought her child with her on tour and he or she was sleeping in the greenroom and couldn’t stay out that late to sign autographs or do meet & greets.

One of my favorite shows this year was seeing Kristin Hersh live at the Icehouse in Minneapolis. I'm happy to announce that Hersh is back with Throwing Muses and she's releasing the band's first new music in ten years called Purgatory/Paradise. Yes, their last self-titled album was released in 2003.

What is unique about this upcoming Purgatory/Paradise release is that it will be released as a book and CD … although it is probably not a surprise to Kristin Hersh fans, who is familiar with her Crooked book/CD combo and biography Rat Girl, etc.

Still, I find it cool because, like Hersh, I'm old still would prefer to hold and adore music in my hand, reading over the liner notes, admiring or trying to make sense of the artwork, and reading over the written words and lyrics… There's something magical about owning a physical representation of music - why do you think vinyl are so popular these days?

In addition to the art book, which was designed by drummer Dave Narcizo, the book comes downloadable content such as commentary, instrumentals, and the album plus art in multiple digital formats!

Look for Purgatory/Paradise on November 11th via Harper Collins/It Books (actual book release date is October 28th). Makes for a perfect gift for the Throwing Muses fan in your family.

"My setlist is super depressing," warned Kristin Hersh as she took the stage at the Icehouse in Minneapolis last night, May 19th.

If you've never been to the Icehouse before, this is basically a restaurant with a stage on the right wall, in the center. Every table and seats can see the stage very clearly, including the mezzanine along the back and side.

The show was as intimate as you can get, with just Hersh and her electric guitar. Sure, it got uncomfortably quiet, but that's okay, fans were just really happy and captivated by Kristin Hersh on stage, in the spotlight.

As you hear Hersh kicking into "Your Dirty Answer", followed by "Sno Cat", you realized that every song she wrote had a story behind it. In the case of "Sno Cat", this was after she got into a fight and drove off mad in her car. She didn't know where to go, but somehow ended up seeing someone (insane?) drive circles in the snow and she realized how unimportant whatever she was fighting was. I think Hersh did a better job explaining the story.

RAT GIRL: A MEMOIR

Anyway, in-between her songs, she read excerpts from her memoir, Rat Girl. I was wrong before, apparently Rat Girl, is basically Hersh's teenage diary, right before recording their first record. It's interesting to hear these true "adult" stories from a teenager.

As for the songs, you can see from the setlist (from my notes), that most of her set was from her solo records. Her most well-known song, "Your Ghost", obviously got the best audience reaction.

The most interesting song on her set was "Detox", which she explained was so new that even she wasn't sure if she could play it. She then laughed and said it didn't matter because we (the audience) wouldn't know it. The song is part of a six-song set that she released under creative commons, so you are welcome to download and remix her work at kristinhersh.com.

Near the end of the show, she threw in a couple of Throwing Muses songs and for the encore, a 50 Foot Wave (her other band).

Throwing Muses

Although Throwing Muses formed in 1981, I actually didn't get on the bandwagon until their breakout album, Red Heaven. I think for the summer of 1992, I must have listened to Throwing Muses' "Firepile" single a million times. There was just something amazing with that guitar hook, those simple lyrics, and, of course, Kristin Hersh's distinctive vocals. Although I love the song, apparently it wasn't important enough to include in 4AD's two-disc compilation Anthology.

Anyway, in the early 90s, if things went according to plan, Throwing Muses were on the verge of mainstream. It didn't quite happen, for some reason, Throwing Muses' other primary member and step-sister Tanya Donelly left Throwing Muses in 1990 to play for the Breeders and then eventually form her own band called Belly (who did enjoy some success with Star). Hersh was also fighting her own battles: diagnosed with bipolar disorder, taking medications, and finding herself pregnant. All this was covered in her memoir called Rat Girl.

After the major label Sire Records dropped Throwing Muses, they tried to continue but eventually the band broke up after their seventh album, Limbo. That wasn't the end, a decade ago; Throwing Muses came back with a self-titled album, featuring the long-awaited return of Tanya Donnelly. I'm not sure of Donnelly's future involvement, but expect Throwing Muses to release a brand new album for 2013.

I was looking over the Minneapolis calendar and noticed that singer Hersh is going to appear live at Icehouse tonight, May 19th. This is a 21+ event.
