Detroit’s Adult. has been pretty inactive since we last wrote about them in February 2007. Since Why Bother? in 2007, the band came back in 2013 with The Way Things Fall, and most recently, Detroit House Guests, released last year. ....

So I finally got a chance to see Adult. live. We’ve been writing about the Detroit synth-punk duo since Feb 2007 (15 years ago). For whatever reasons (usually I’m already covering another band the night Adult. played) I just never got around to seeing them live. All that changed last Wednesday night (May 18). In fact, I was already committed to seeing Oh Wonder at First Ave and would have missed Adult. (again!) if it wasn’t for the fact that Oh Wonder was an all-ages show and started much earlier than the, er, adult-age show. So, it all worked out in the end, and I’m happy to report that Adult. did not disappoint.

Starting with Spike Hellis, an electronic duo based out of Los Angeles, California. The two, Cortland Dévon Gibson and Elaine Chang, played some industrial, some EBM, and some electroclash sound. Chang bounces all over the stage, set to strobe lights. The audience seem won over by the duo by the time their set ended.

Next up was Kontravoid, who I was supposed to see November 1, 2012. It didn’t work out.

What I can tell you about Kontravoid is that he used to be Crystal Castles’ live drummer, but when I saw the band in Sep 2016, they didn’t have a drummer (instead using a drum machine).

Kontravoid played one song, and then once he puts on his mask, everyone got excited. There’s just something mysterious about the masked singer. Lots of strobes… very Crystal Castles-sounding, so it’s all good if you like that sound.

Finally, Adult. (Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller) closed the show out. Their fanbase are diehard fans, many of them have seen the Detroit band numerous times.

For this tour, it would seem like they were using the Ring girl as inspiration on their concert poster. They seem to invoke fear and dread of a supernatural evil girl crawling on the floor, set to a blood red background. The truth is, seeing them on stage, I thought it was closer to other horror genre, like Hellraiser. It’s all good, they still had a great electroclash/electropunk sound.

Singer Nicola Kuperus is often seen with her arms open, holding double mics (both have different sound effects). She seemed really happy to be on stage to her adoring fans.

Adult.’s new album Becoming Undone is out now via Dais Records.

Acclaimed Malian artist Vieux Farka Touré will be playing the Dakota Jazz Club, in Minneapolis, on May 18, in support of his forthcoming album Les Racines (World Circuit Records).

Vieux is known as the “Hendrix of the Sahara” and is the son of the late “Desert Blues” pioneer Ali Farka Touré. We saw him play in July 2013 and said, “The music that the band exuded was very African, but had the sound of underlying western rock and roll. Much of the times it had a very rhythm and jazzy expression. Mostly, it sounded joyful. Vieux Farka Touré is from Mali and all the words were sung in his native tongue.”

Recently, London duo Oh Wonder dropped new single, “F*** It, I Love You”, taken from their upcoming 22 Make (set for release on July 22nd on Republic Records). We had to censor the title, and the duo (Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West) did mention that they might try for a radio-friendly version: “We’re struggling for a non-explicit version.”

With that news, Oh Wonder will be doing a short American tour. They are returning to First Avenue on May 18th. No opening band announced as of this writing.

We saw Oh Wonder in June 2016 and said, “Oh Wonder has been selling out most of the more populated cities on their first U.S.A. tour, and it’s a good indication that they may have to come back at bigger venues. If you were lucky enough to have caught them at the incredibly packed show last Friday, you’ll realized that this is probably the smallest place they’ll play in their career.”

Swedish songstress Winona Oak will open the show. Oak's debut album Island of the Sun is coming out June 10th. After this American tour with Oh Wonder, Winona is slated to support Alec Benjamin on his European tour this summer.

I was actually surprised to see Tiffany touring listing at the Turf Club, I didn’t know she was on tour.

I remember in 1987, there were two princess of pop ruling the radio airwaves: Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. Tiffany was known for her cover songs, the first was Tommy James and the Shondells’ “I Think We're Alone Now” and the second was a girl version of The Beatles “I Saw Her Standing There”.

The last news I saw was that Tiffany released a single of “Hey Baby” and a deluxe version of Pieces Of Me on Deko Entertainment.

Kontravoid

If you're heading out to see Crystal Castles at First Avenue on November 1st, I can tell you that one of the opening bands is called Kontravoid. This is a recent project from Cam Findlay, who was previously in a synth-pop band called Parallels. What's actually sad is that Parallels was basically created by Findlay, as a sort of solo project, but when he teamed up with Holly Dodson (daughter of Rich Dodson, guitarist and composer from The Stampeders), it became a full band. Findlay left Parallels last year to create Kontravoid, probably to devote more time and control to his dark synth music (and not to mention creepy with the mask). Kontravoid was Crystal Castles' live drummer in 2008, which I am assuming with this current tour that he will once again take up the drummer mantle. He is currently on tour in support of his self-titled debut LP. The regular release and a deluxe set, which includes a live collection, are available now via Pretty Pretty Records.
