We’ve seen “Brown James Brown” King Khan solo and Mark Sultan (BBQ) solo, but together, they’re a unique rock force. Desert Daze: October 12-14, 2018

Read More Desert Daze October (thank god because we would all melt in the otherwise typical days of such shenanigans) will bestow the 6th installation of the transcendent music festival Desert Daze in Joshua Tree, California. .... Tame Impala Tame Impala is touring the U.S. again in support of their album, Lonerism. Kevin and crew have definitely crafted a piece of art. Loud, incredibly groovy. ... Slowdive Shoegaze band Slowdive are currently on a reunion tour, stopping by Minneapolis' Fine Line Music Café, after being absent from the city in twenty-two years! ....

Ah, the mornings are beginning to be met by a cool autumn breeze...so this must mean desert festival season is under way! Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists, and this year is no exception. With Tame Impala headlining, it could in fact be the best one yet.

I could enumerate on how this festival is, in my opinion, the Mecca of all festivals, but it is really something to be seen by the own eye to truly comprehend. Along with bizarre instillations and an entire village complete with meditation tent and tea ceremonies, this isn’t just a music festival…it’s an Extraterrestrial Festival.

The California-based festival run by Jjuujju’s guitarist Phil Pirrone has an impressive lineup this year featuring Tame Impala, My Bloody Valentine, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (also a returning band), Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, Shellac, Ty Segall & White Fence, Warpaint, Earth (performing The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull), Malcom Mooney of CAN, Steve Albini, Connan Mockasin, Pond, and Julia Holter, Earthless. There are always surprise guests and DJ’s along with plenty of mind-enhancing activities to attend in between shows.

English dream-pop band Slowdive has recently been added to the festival, which will by far be one of the most sought-out performances of the weekend.

We’ve seen the Canadian band Dragonette a couple of times and can tell you that they are a really fun dance electropop trio. At the height of their popularity when they released Bodyparts, they were performing on Good Morning America and collaborated with such acts like Kaskade, Galantis, Big Data, Martin Solveig, etc.

Now the trio is back with their fourth studio album Royal Blues.

New York’s Gibbz (aka Mike Gibney and was last seen in Minneapolis on February 2016) will open the show. He has an upcoming EP called Oh My God, due out on December 16th. This may be a great way of checking him out before he tackle his first headlining tour in 2017.

P.S., My favorite all-time Dragonette song is called ‘Hello’, which is actually a collaboration with French DJ Martin Solveig.

Mark Sultan (the drummer of The King Khan & BBQ Show) stopped by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night, Friday, August 5th.

Bug Fix

Opening up the show were two local bands Real Numbers, followed by Bug Fix. The latter is actually somewhat of a local supergroup, consisting of Birthday Suits’ Hideo Takahashi, Red Pens’ Howard Hamilton, and Selby Tigers’ Dave Gatchell. The way the trio played rough / garagey / punk music with effortless ease, they were really bringing all their years of experience to this band.

The BBQ, otherwise known as Mark Sultan, is a one-man band. How Sultan achieved this is by positioning his drum kit with the snare vertical and tambourine attached to the bass drum. His feet would serve as percussion to let his hands free to play the guitar.

Sultan, dressed in a L.A.M.F. shirt (the only studio album by The Heartbreakers) and eyeball headdress, he started his 50-min set with ‘I'll Be Lovin’ You’, followed by ‘I Wanna Be The Only One’... as the night continues the music stopped suddenly: “Is everyone alright? I’m not a good musician, but I love playing music,” Sultan said, interrupting right in the middle of ‘Beautiful Girl’ (which sounded like it was inspired by The Beach Boys). Then minutes later, after fixing some hitch, he continued with an extended version of that song.

Realizing that he probably didn’t have enough material to play a full headlining gig (and the fact that he honestly admitted he had diarrhea from some spicy food) he would just jabber, telling (bad) jokes, and vamping for time. None of it really mattered, at the end of it, Sultan confessed that who cares, as long as you love what you’re doing. Clearly, even with the bad food, Sultan was enjoying his time back in the USA from his current Germany residency.

Sultan ended his set with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Out of Time’ (although done more in the Ramones style), asking his fans to dance. No encores were given, but none were expected. And with that, ‘baby, baby, you're out of time.’

Communist Daughter is headlining the Amsterdam Bar & Hall next Saturday, November 21st. Although recently only Johnny & Molly were on a tour, they'll be joined by the full band at this come town gig.

Opening up will be Tiny Deaths, who we previously saw in September 2014 and noted that they were a duo (singer/keyboardist Claire de Lune and producer/guitarist Grant Cutler). We're pretty sure her name is in reference to the French word for "clair de lune" which means moonlight.

The other tiny/little opener is Twee pop band Little Fevers... playing in support their debut LP Field Trip, available now. The record was recorded with Matt Boynton (Beirut, MGMT) and mastered by David Gardner (Black Lips). Three songs on the record were specially recorded by engineer Neil Weir at the historic Old Blackberry Way in Minneapolis where Twin Tone Records was born (The Replacements).

Little Fevers went on their national tour last October and finally back home with this local show. Their two December dates will be in Iowa, at Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines (December 4) and Bluestem Ames in Ames (December 5).

You know we like The Dandy Warhols... and they love "Minnesoter." Minneapolis is pretty much the only city where they will automatically play "Minnesoter", which are often not written on their standard setlist.

We've been going to Dandy shows since October 2000, this is one of the best live bands as they've demonstrated with their special live album, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Live At The Wonder, which came out last year on The End Records.

Jimi just attended the Burgerama IV two-night music festival at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California, last weekend (March 28-29th, 2015).

What he reported:

Burger Records is an established record company known for releasing cassette tapes... and they've been putting on this 'Rama music festival for the last four years. Each year it gets bigger and badder, I had to go before it implodes on itself.

Enjoying a Burger

I have been to a lot of music festivals in my lifetime, so far this has been the most fun, authentic, feel-good music festivals I have gone to. Plus it is super cheap compared to other festivals (I'm looking at you Coachella). There is an air of chutzpah and moxie that is infectious from the Burger Clan. Burger Records and their D.I.Y. aesthetic harkens back to the good old days of the 90's and nostalgic as cassette tapes may be, there is one thing that never goes out of style and that is good tunes.

So going into a festival, you're going have to pick bands you like and pit them off against each other. As a music lover you will always be in an inner turmoil of which band you need to fight to see, and which ones you will pass on. So often is the case of, should you go see the main well-established band playing the main stage or some smaller up and coming band at the tiny stage. You will never make a bad choice with Burger though, because like any good record company they are curating the musical landscape. So if you're a Burger Fan, chances are you'll like whatever you see.

So here are some personal highlights from the 3 day Burger Fest.

Highlights from the Pre-Party (27 March 2015):

I finally got to meet Sean from Burger and I gave him a vintage Hulk Hogan hat.

Also amazing that the Pre-Party included some of my favorite bands was just icing on this awesome cake.

Pookie & The Poodlez, Cumstain, and Guantanamo Baywatch all bringing their A-games here. Guantanamo Baywatch plays surf tunes without a whammy bar... amazing.

Highlights from Day 1 (28 March 2015):

Weezer's singer Rivers Cuomo brought out his dad, Frank Cuomo, and they play "Back to the Shack". One of the most touching things I have witness in my many years of watching Weezer shows.

White Fang (Gnar Tapes) also kills it for me, because those dudes are just out there having fun.

Highlights from Day 2 (29 March 2015):

Black Lips and King Khan

Bone Thugs in Harmony played a tribute to Eazy E. (a tear from my eye as I pour out a forty).

Black Lips and The King Khan & BBQ Show form together and play an Almighty Defenders song.

Ty Segall encore erupts the largest mosh pit of the 3 days by playing a Black Sabbath cover.

Everyone I had talked to from fans to band member to merch sellers are genuinely nice and in good spirits. I never experience this much of a camaraderie in such a long time. It is, as if everyone in So-Cal is so down with Burger. Cassette tapes are made of a magnetic material that records the analog music. That magnetic material also binds us fans together. Long Live Burger!!!

Texas' a cappella group Pentatonix begins their "On My Way Home" tour today (February 25th).... stopping by Minneapolis on Saturday, March 7th.

You may recall that they had one of the best Christmas album last year with That's Christmas To Me (hitting #9 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Holiday Charts).

These 'theatre' shows generally ends around 10:30pm... so you could potentially also catch The Dodos and Springtime Carnivore over at the 7th Street Entry (their showtime is around 10pm).

It's very confusing, but depending on if King Khan is playing with The Shrines or BBQ Show, they are two very different type of shows.

With The Shrines, it's very "soul", with a big brass section.... with the BBQ Show, the show will likely be more garage/psychedelic. This time, King Khan is returning to Minneapolis in his psych band.

Personally, I think it's confusing, so I embraced that Mark Sultan ("the BBQ") wanted to change their name to Jumbo Lions? It might already be too late by now.

King Khan & BBQ Show's latest release is Bad News Boys, came out this week (February 24th) via In the Red Records. Look for the vinyl on March 17th, 2015.
