Mona Mur

German vocalist, composer and audio designer Mona Mur will be releasing Teen Icon on February 17th, via Give/Take Records. In the 80s, Mur can be found working with FM Einheit, Mark Chung, and can be heard on video game and film soundtracks.

Her latest Teen Icon features two cover songs: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana and “Icon” by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Why were these songs chosen? For “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, it was renowned German arthouse film director Elfi Mikesch, who suggested Mona Mur take on the song in her version. Mona created a heavier, doomier version, of the song.

As for “Icon”, that was through a request for a recent tribute album. Mona had never conceived of covering Siouxsie before, but took on the challenge.

Southampton’s trio Band of Skulls (bass/vocals Emma Richardson, guitars/vocals Russell Marsden and drummer Matt Hayward) is returning to Minneapolis next Sunday, September 11th, promoting their new album By Default (BMG).

The new record, produced by Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters, Patti Smith), was recorded at Rockfield Studios (which looked like it was recorded in a church, looking at the album’s cover).

Musician and filmmaker Adam Green is bringing his Adam Green’s Aladdin Concert and Movie Tour to Minneapolis on September 10 and 11.

If you don’t know who Adam Green is, he is one-half of The Moldy Peaches (the other half being Kimya Dawson), a duo that we wrote about in 2008. Never heard of Moldy Peaches either? If you saw that Ellen Page/Michael Cera film Juno (which we wrote about in 2007), you may recall hearing the both of them sing a Moldy Peaches song ‘Anyone Else But You’.

On Saturday, September 10th, Adam Green (and his band) will play a live show at the Icehouse in Minneapolis. Additional details here: icehousempls.com. Sean Na Na (led by Har Mar Superstar) to open.

NOTE: Typical Icehouse shows starts at 11pm, which means Green won’t be on stage until after midnight, so technically he’ll be playing September 11th.

Speaking of September 11th, on Sunday, there will be a special screening and Q&A of Adam Green’s Aladdin at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis. I believe there will be a full band playing a live soundtrack to the film.

I've never been there before, but I would think this is a smaller than the usual venue that superstar rapper Atmosphere and his usual Rhymesayers … Murs DJ Foundation introduced Murs as he came on asking "whatupdawg?" While most people will probably list "I Used to Love H.E.R." or the Nate Dogg homage as their favorite of the night … Prof Fashawn, in his brief twenty minutes, brought out both Prof and Brother Ali for separate duets and showcased DJ Fresh who twirled the knobs on a mixer embedded in a giant boombox. … The Uncluded For those of you who are fans of both folk and hip hop, look no further than the unlikely duo of Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock, writing music as The Uncluded. … Eyedea & Abilities I recently found out the untimely passing of Eyedea, who was just twenty-eight years old when he died. We don't cover enough hip-hop, I saw him on stage about four ... P.O.S. They only played two songs during the pop up show but for the second song they brought Stef (better known as local rapper and Doomtree member P.O.S.) up to sing about orange juice called "Shake It Well." The song ...

Friday night was the 20th anniversary show for Rhymesayers Entertainment. 20 years of putting out amazing music is a feat in itself. Add practically selling out the Target Center and you have an untouchable beast of a label.

There were far too many acts last night for me to write about each one so I will try and highlight my favorites.

P.O.S.

P.O.S. was one of the first acts to take the stage. He had to play extra early because Doomtree, a local rap collective (no, they are a machine), had a show in Chicago that same night that he had to make it to. There is no rivalry between the two groups which is amazing. Both Rhymesayers and Doomtree are full of amazing musicians and people. I kind of wish that all of Doomtree would have been able to be at the show last night but I understand that last night was supposed to be, and deserved to be, all about Rhymesayers.

Toki Wright was amazing as always. Unfortunately, sets were short due to the sheer amount of groups and musicians they had to get through so he was only able to play three songs but he killed it with the three songs. It's so amazing to see someone like Toki Wright on such a huge stage. Toki was actually one of the teachers at my college and is such a nice, down to earth guy. That's what this scene is all about... the fact that here's one of my old teachers playing to a crowd of thousands. Amazing.

Grieves

Grieves is definitely one of my favorite acts from Rhymesayers. He didn't use this show as a platform to showcase just his new music, he played old songs that I didn't think he was going to play. Grieves is just a skinny white boy living in Seattle but when he takes the stage, he is larger than life.

Prof

Make sure you keep an eye on Prof. Mark my words, he will be the next big thing in the scene up here. His set was full of so much energy, it was unreal. There were numerous inflatable animals and beach balls thrown out into the crowd. There were even two of those "wacky waving inflatable arm men" on either side of the stage. His music was upbeat and fun. Even if you had never heard of him before, you couldn't help but start jumping up and down.

DJ Abilities

DJ Abilities did a touching tribute to Mike "Eyedea" Larsen. Eyedea was a beast in the scene. Together with DJ Abilities, they formed Eyedea & Abilities and were blowing up in the scene when he tragically died of an accidental drug overdose. Almost every rap show I go to in the Twin Cities, whether it is Doomtree or Rhymesayers affiliated, there is mention of Eyedea. Last night Abilities took the stage, as he frequently does in the cities, with his amazing turntable skills. The whole time he played, there was video of Eyedea being played in the background and he sampled many of the songs they did together. The set ended with silence and an old picture of Eyedea and Abilities. You could feel the heaviness in the crowd but it wasn't an awkward heaviness. It was a heaviness that just showed the enormous crowd's appreciation for Eyedea and all that he did for this scene.

The Uncluded

I was shocked when I saw Kimya Dawson walk onto the stage with Aesop Rock. I shouldn't have been so surprised. Had I actually read the lineup, I would have noticed it said "The Uncluded" which is the duo of rapper Aesop Rock and singer/ songwriter Kimya Dawson. Of course, I missed that in the line-up but what a pleasant surprise. Kimya is the woman that did majority of the soundtrack for the hit film Juno. I never thought I would be able to see her live because she tried to live a low-profile life. The smile that filled my face never left from the time she stepped foot on stage. I did go a wee bit fan girl when I realized that she was standing behind me for majority of the rest of the show. How awesome is that, Kimya Dawson was right behind me. Hot damn that was a highlight of the night!

Atmosphere

The show closed out with Atmosphere who is always a crowd favorite. Slug, the rapper of the rapper/ DJ duo, is a beast and king of the scene here. Not just that, he's an awesome, down to earth guy. They brought up many musicians that had already graced the stage along with some surprise acts including, one of my favorites, Murs.

People came from all over for the show last night. It was a huge deal and it was right down the street from my apartment. What an amazing city. What an amazing music scene. What amazing people.

The duo of Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock, known as The Uncluded, played for their fans at the Cedar Cultural Center on Sunday, June 30. The pair recently released an album, Hokey Fright, and were touring in support of its release.

Playing to a nearly full house, a visibly and audibly nervous Kimya Dawson made note of how it was so awesome to have so many fans in Minneapolis. Perhaps part of her nervous energy came from the fact that she is not only very familiar with the city and has several friends here, but the record label The Uncluded belongs to, Rhymesayers Entertainment, is headquarter in Minneapolis. A little pressure never hurt anybody.

They played every song off the 17-track album, starting out the set with 'Earthquake'. Coupling the playfulness of Dawson's lyrics and voice with Aesop's rapid-fire lyrical delivery worked somehow, even if it was a strange way. You could tell the two of them adored each other and were thrilled to be sharing a stage together. The songs were held together by programmed beats and the talents of multi-instrumentalist James Lynch. He played everything from ukulele to bass to keyboard and painted a perfectly fitting musical canopy to showcase Dawson and Aesop Rock's lyrics/vocals.

The night appreciated many moments: some light, playful and funny ones, and some intense, heartfelt ones. A highlight showcasing the latter was the song 'Walk Like Thunder", an autobiographical song about Dawson nearly overdosing 10 years previous and coming out of it stronger. "Thank you, Minneapolis, you beautiful fucking city" echoed throughout the Cedar, as Dawson continually praised a place she felt honored to be playing at, citing the Cedar as her "favorite venue to play".

They ended the night with the last track off Hokey Fright with 'Tits Up', a song with an 80s feel that had the crowd not only moving around wildly, but gesturing their hands with emphasis on the chorus line of "tits up!". The band was met with passionate accolades from the crowd. They then swiftly offered to talk to and take pictures with any or all of their fans after their set. That's the definition of a crowd-pleasing evening.

I just saw Juno, the Jason Reitman film (of Thank You For Smoking fame). There are a few things that really impressed me about this witty and funny comedy: the actors,  writing (although Juno, played by Ellen Page, is sometime too outrageous and quirky to be a believable 16 year old girl), the Minnesotan cities (!), and the awesome soundtrack.

If you haven't heard anything about this movie, the film is about Juno MacGuff who finds out that she's pregnant after having sex with Paulie Bleeker, played by the always awkward Michael Cera. She considered having an abortion, before changing her mind to give birth and to give up her baby for adoption. The movie follows her as she searches for the perfect couple to give up her baby and ultimately discovers herself and her true feelings.

The Moldy Peaches - Anyone Else But You Belle And Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher

The soundtrack consists mostly of Kimya Dawson (including a Moldy Peaches song, "Anyone Else but You", which really is the movie's anthem song) and, notably Belle & Sebastian (two songs, "Piazza New York Catcher" and "Expectations"), as well as Cat Power ("Sea of Love") and The Kinks ("A Well Respected Man").

On a side note, The Kinks seems to be enjoying a year of soundtrack as they also appeared on The Darjeeling Limited and Hot Fuzz.

So the song I wanted to use was the cover of The Moldy Peaches' "Anyone Else But You" (originally appearing on their debut 2001 album). What's really cool about this cover song is that it's actually sung by the two main actors, Ellen Page and Michael Cera. What's even cooler: the two actors played the song themselves on acoustic guitars :)

Anyway, a great soundtrack, but I'm sure all the blogs are also saying the same thing, so I'll just leave it at that.

PS, there is an appearance by Rainn Wilson who plays the store clerk at the beginning of the film. He really stole all the scene whenever he's on! Hilarious.

I just saw Juno, the Jason Reitman film (of Thank You For Smoking fame). There are a few things that really impressed me about this witty and funny comedy: the actors,  writing (although Juno, played by Ellen Page, is sometime too outrageous and quirky to be a believable 16 year old girl), the Minnesotan cities (!), and the awesome soundtrack.

If you haven't heard anything about this movie, the film is about Juno MacGuff who finds out that she's pregnant after having sex with Paulie Bleeker, played by the always awkward Michael Cera. She considered having an abortion, before changing her mind to give birth and to give up her baby for adoption. The movie follows her as she searches for the perfect couple to give up her baby and ultimately discovers herself and her true feelings.

The Moldy Peaches - Anyone Else But You Belle And Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher

The soundtrack consists mostly of Kimya Dawson (including a Moldy Peaches song, "Anyone Else but You", which really is the movie's anthem song) and, notably Belle & Sebastian (two songs, "Piazza New York Catcher" and "Expectations"), as well as Cat Power ("Sea of Love") and The Kinks ("A Well Respected Man").

On a side note, The Kinks seems to be enjoying a year of soundtrack as they also appeared on The Darjeeling Limited and Hot Fuzz.

So the song I wanted to use was the cover of The Moldy Peaches' "Anyone Else But You" (originally appearing on their debut 2001 album). What's really cool about this cover song is that it's actually sung by the two main actors, Ellen Page and Michael Cera. What's even cooler: the two actors played the song themselves on acoustic guitars :)

Anyway, a great soundtrack, but I'm sure all the blogs are also saying the same thing, so I'll just leave it at that.

PS, there is an appearance by Rainn Wilson who plays the store clerk at the beginning of the film. He really stole all the scene whenever he's on! Hilarious.

PPS, bonus points for mentioning The Wizard of Gore and Dario Argento's Susperia.

Just to give you an idea of the lack of organization at W♥M, we have this shared "pending" list of bands we're working on and I guess Ryan was working on Herman Düne, which I'm actually sort of writing about today. Fortunately, I will not be too focused on Herman, but on David-Ivar's alter-ego, Yayahoni.

At the end of last year, Andre left the band, so I believe it's basically just David-Ivar and his drummer. They're currently on a long European tour.

Anyroad, he's released seven different cover songs on his website, among them is my favorite Kimya Dawson song, "Being Cool".

Dawson is a famous anti-folk singer and songwriter (I don't know about you, but when I think of anti-folk, I think of anti-pasta). She's also probably most know for being half of The Moldy Peaches, who's signed to Sanctuary Records/Rough Trade.

What I really like about this song (and really, any of Dawson's songs) is that it's full of wonderful and descriptive lyrics.
