Even though metal is not really my thing, I absolutely love going to see Gwar. Their amazing costumes and antics are just so entertaining… and even if you don’t love their music, I guarantee that you will have a fun time at their shows.

Gwar is currently on tour in celebration of their (delayed) 30th annivesary of their album Scumdogs Of The Universe.

Show up early to check out Napalm Death and EyeHateGod. We caught Napalm Death in June 2016 and wrote, “Napalm Death has been around forever. They started in 1981 and have been around ever since. These guys were probably the most classifiable band of the night. They were metal, with a little bit of punk, a little bit of grind... well crap, now you understand why the phrase "soiree of weirdness" is a perfect way to explain the music of last night.”

Minneapolis’ Bad Bad Hats signed with Don Giovanni Records for their brand new album, Walkman, due out September 17.

The trio (Kerry Alexander, Chris Hoge, and Con Davison) shared their lead single “Detroit Basketball”, which you can watch on YouTube.

They sure seem to have a thing for sports, because we last saw them at Rock the Garden 2019 and mentioned, “This was the group’s first time playing at Rock the Garden, and they were both excited and seemingly nervous…. Especially, when Alexander was trying to explain/dedicate their new song “Wide Right” to the sports team Buffalo Bills.”

I’m almost certain that the group will play plenty of tracks from the forthcoming album at their hometown gigs at the end of July. There’ll be an early and late show for the Saturday date.

Kansas City’s Shiner will be in St Paul at the Turf Club on December 12th. The show is co-headlined with Spotlights.

Shiner will be play tracks from their latest album Schadenfreude, which was released earlier this year. The band’s Paul Epley shares, “Shiner, like every other band in the entire effing world, was beyond devastated when we couldn’t support our first record in 20 years, Schadenfreude last May. We barely even got it made and all of a sudden, whammy. That’s what makes these shows so much more special for us is the ability to play this record live for our fans.”

Once again, it’s our favorite time of the year: Rock the Garden.

Let’s break down the eight bands that is on the line for 2019:

The National haven’t been to Minneapolis since August 2013 (when they were touring in support of their 6th album Trouble Will Find Me), so we’re excited to see them on the lineup. We’ve previously stated how much we love the band, despite the mumbling singing style.

Another favorite, Courtney Barnett is on the bill. This is the Australian singer’s second Rock the Garden appearance, having appeared in RTG 2015. We’ve been singing Barnett’s praises since her two original EPs in 2013.

Los Angeles’ X is next. We’ve seen the band a few times, their last appearance in the area was in Sep 2017, which we said, “What can we say about this iconic punk band? Since forming in 1977, the band was one of the first wave of truly unique American punk. Their simple “X” name was a cause for many confusing stories…”

Local-ish duo Heart Bones (featuring Har Mar Superstar and the magical Sabrina Ellis of Sweet Spirit) is also on the list. If you missed them last November, you’ll be happy to see them on Rock the Garden.

Rapper deM atlaS (who we last saw at Super Bowl Live Day 2 in Jan 2018).

Over at the Garden Stage: Local Bad Bad Hats (last reviewed in Sep 2015) and Nashville’s Adia Victoria (we last saw her Jun 2016).

The only band we’ve not seen live before is The Beths (vocalist/guitarist Elizabeth Stokes, guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Pearce and bassist/vocalist Benjamin Sinclair) from New Zealand… so we’re very keen on seeing them play.

Oh Wonder is kicking off their Ultralife tour at First Avenue in Minneapolis on Tuesday.

We caught the British duo at their first Minneapolis show in June 2016 and noted, “This was Oh Wonder’s first time in Minneapolis, and they were incredibly pleased at the turn out and also the historic nature of the venue (it is often associated with Prince as the venue was used often in the film Purple Rain). Of course, with only one album under their belt, the band basically played their entire album live. Hits like ‘Lose It’ were done early in the set, Unforgotten theme song ‘All We Do’ played mid-set, and saving new single ‘Plans’ for the encore.”

Los Angeles’ X is on their 40th Anniversary tour. They are proud to mention that all the original band members are on this anniversary tour, including singer Exene Cervenka, bassist/singer John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer D.J. Bonebrake.

We previously caught the band in a rare appearance in 2015 and Exene and John earlier this July 2017. Noted, “Another iconic front woman, Exene Cervenka and musical partner from X, John Doe opened the first leg and this show with a short twenty-three minute acoustic set. Half of the iconic punk band came off more like Johnny and June than say, Sid and Nancy, playing a folk-tinged, stripped set that included X classics, and a couple covers.”

Rising punk band Skating Polly is the special guests for all of X’s tour, as we’ve previously mentioned. We caught the sibling band when they headlined the 7th Street Entry in May 2017 and said, “The history of Skating Polly actually started in 2009, when the two step-siblings, Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, respectively. While we were curious about the duo, having written about them last year, the band made a big change in their DIY band in 2017: they added their brother Kurtis Mayo to the lineup.”

We last saw the trio in September 2015 and wrote, “I think it's best summed up by The Cribs' guitarist/vocalist Ryan Jarman as he exclaimed, "Let's rock like it's 2007!" referring to their first St Paul show. The trio, featuring twins Ryan & Gary, and younger brother Ross Jarman, are currently touring in support of their sixth studio album For All My Sisters, which came out last March 2015 via Sonic Blew / Sony RED UK.”
