Jazz singer Kat Edmonson is currently on tour in support of The Big Picture, stopping by the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis last night, October 16th.

Opening up the show was Lucy Michelle, with an unexpected appearance by Chris Koza. Michelle played some tracks from her previous band Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles ("Just a Kid") and one Karen Dalton cover ("Something On Your Mind"), but the majority of her set consisted of her solo material from Attack of the Heart, including the album's finale (and set closer) "Honey Moon".

Lucy Michelle will be back at the Dakota on October 26th, with a full live band. I am assuming the live band will feature some members from her new band, Field Trip.

The first time Kat Edmonson made her way to Minneapolis, it was last year at the Dakota Jazz Club. She got such a great reception and had such a good time, that for this 2014 tour, she had to come back to the Dakota.

As expected with these new album tour, the majority of the set was taken from the new album, The Big Picture (Sony Masterworks), which incidentally landed at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz, as well as #2 on Billboard Total Jazz chart.

I can tell that Edmonson is a natural born storyteller, as she could not wait to tell us all the little stories about her songs. My favorite story was for "Oh My Love", which about halfway into the song, Edmonson started singing in French. She tells us that an Ad Agency in Austin, Texas, wanted her to record an upbeat French song (as they erroneously used a sad/depressing lyrical song). Edmonson agreed to write and sing a new song in French... at first thinking it would be easy-peasy, but then quickly realized what a mistake she's made.

Setlist

Kat stuck to the setlist, except they skipped out "Who's Counting", in favor of playing it for the encore. The actual song intended for the encore, "For Two", was not played.

Caving to demands for another song, Edmonson remained on stage as her band went back stage. She took a deep breath and started singing "Nobody Knows That" a cappella. The entire audience was quiet as a mouse, listening to every note.

Kat Edmonson continues her tour in support of The Big Picture. If you attend her show, she is usually very accessible and you can usually get photos/autographs with the artist after the show.

In August, we mentioned that Kat Edmonson will be out on tour in October... wow that was fast, October is here already. That means Edmonson is currently in the middle of her tour in support of her latest The Big Picture album.

The record landed at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz, as well as #2 on Billboard Total Jazz chart. The New York Times called the album "energetic and jubilant" and NPR said it featured "a timeless sound..."

Kat will be playing at the Dakota Jazz Club, with local Lucy Michelle listed as opener. Michelle used to be in a band called Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles, but they renamed themselves Field Trip.

Since this Summer, Richmond-based Carbon Leaf have been on a 50+ show tour, extending all the way into 2015. They are stopping in St Paul at the Turf Club on Thursday, playing tracks from their Indian Summer Revisited album. As the name suggest, it is a ten year anniversary re-recording of the band's breakout 2004 album Indian Summer. Ten years later, hear the band with a different set of ears, as they have grown up and have access to better technology.

Canadian Delhi 2 Dublin will once again stop by Minneapolis' Cedar Cultural Center this Thursday, October 16th. Like their previous appearance, it seems like the band does not have an opener.

Just to give you a background on the band, their music cannot really be classify under any one sound. You can call it a fusion of electronica, bhangra beats and Celtic fiddle - hence their name Delhi (India) to Dublin (Ireland). Needless to say, it's an interesting mix of music genre, if you ever get a chance to see them live for yourself.

They recorded LIVE, a live album, on July 2014 in their hometown in Vancouver to celebrate their 8th year as a band.

Katherine Thomas, aka The Great Kat, is a violinist who plays classical music but done in a thrashy metal style. Guitar One magazine said she's one of the "Fastest Shredders of All Time", often comparing her to Yngwie Malmsteen (who we just saw in Minneapolis!)

The Great Kat's music was recently featured in Tesco's TV commercials for Activision video game Call of Duty: Ghosts. The commercial features Kat's version of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," synched perfectly in time with Call of Duty: Ghosts' fast action bombs, explosions, and death defying feats.

Since we're based in the USA, I would imagine Tesco is sort of like a Super Target or Walmart.

The Great Kat's latest release is called Beethoven Shreds and is available on compact disc and DVD, via TPR Music. The description on the record lists, "The Great Kat, the world's fastest guitarist, unleashes the ultimate shred guitar CD. Displaying the world's fastest shred guitar music, this CD features The Great Kat's electrifying tracks on guitar and violin with dazzling insane speeds of 300 BPM (Beats Per Minute)."

Just a reminder that Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, is coming to Minneapolis at the Mill City Nights tomorrow, October 30th. I will be there, will you?

I don't know who the opening band* is for tomorrow night, previously Brooklyn's Xray Eyeballs was on tour with Cat Power, but they seem to have dropped off last night.

Anyway, I'm thrilled to hear her new Sun album live. I also hope to hear "Cross Bones Style," which she didn't sing the last time I saw her.

Spin said that Kitten's 17-year-old singer Chloe Chaidez had "raw power and believability as a performer."

The Los Angeles indieband recently premiered "Japanese Eyes" on Nylon Magazine, which Nylon noted: "In the music video for the synth-heavy 'Japanese Eyes,' Chaidez dances in a disco-ready dress like Ronald Reagan was still the president."

You can get two free songs ("Cut it Out" & "Sugar") on their website, by signing up for their email list.

Look "Japanese Eyes" as "one of the 'rockiest' songs off the EP" on their Cut It Out release, which is out now on Atlantic Records.

You may remember this Texan with her 2009's Take To The Sky hitting the top 20 on Billboard's jazz charts. Certainly legends Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett took noticed of her and had her open up their shows. Lovett even asked her to do a duet with him, covering the Christmas classic, "Baby, It's Cold Outside."

I got a T-Shirt from these guys, Unlawful Assembly. Their design and mascot seems to be a kitten with a gas mask.

I thought they were a band, but it was odd that they didn't send any music, just some stickers and a shirt. I am assuming if you are in a band, you can probably commission a design from them.

I actually had this item for my Halloween music article, but I just realized this has nothing to do with music. This is a book called "Zombie Cat: The Tale of a Decomposing Kitty." The book is written by Isabel Atherton and illustrated by Bethany Straker.

Reading the description, it is about Tiddles, a normal cat that turned into a zombie cat by a radioactive field mouse. Now he craves human brains. Shouldn't he crave cat brains?

This children book was released earlier this month (October 1, 2012), via Skyhorse Publishing. It is available in print and also Kindle Edition, but you know how I feel about digital books.
