Manchester’s finest, Automotion recently sold out the Arci Bellezza, in Milan, Italy. The report comes from our Italian music partner, Kalporz, via Raffaele Concollato and Cecilia Gatto.

The big buzz about Automotion is that their singer is Lennon Gallagher… yes, Liam Gallagher’s son. The band only have a handful of EPs, and according to the report is that their show was less than an hour. It’s made much shorter, because I do not believe there was even an opening band (it might be embarrassing if the opener played longer than the headliner… so it’s probably for the best).

According to NME the band features Jesse Hitchman (vocals/guitar), Lennon Gallagher (vocals/guitar), Otis Eatwell-Hurst (drummer) and Luke Chin-Joseph (bassist). Their debut EP In Motion came out June 4, 2021.

What’s funny is that Lennon made news in 2017, when he wore a Blur T-Shirt.

Raffaele Concollato writes, “The set lasts a little less than an hour… ending with the unreleased “Jungle,” leaving a mark more and give the idea of what has been seen and heard well: the band is in the growing phase, that is probably just a short step away from a leap that they are not yet ready to make.”

Anyway, I’m pretty excited to see another Gallagher doing music, considering that it’s unlikely that we will see Oasis on their trillion dollar reunion tour. That’s completely fine, I’ve seen Oasis at least twice and Liam Gallagher at least twice (in Beady Eye and solo)… so I’m good.

Still, I’m very interested in checking out Automotion, should they eventually tour the USA.

Montreal’s electronic band Desire (featuring Megan Louise and Johnny Jewel) recently headlined Arci Bellezza, in Milan, on December 12, 2024, as part of their Games People Play World Tour.

The band wrote that Orion and System Olympia (they only played three dates in England) were joining the tour.

It’s been a long time since we saw Desire, when they were in Minneapolis with Chromatics in May 2019: “Next up was Montreal’s Desire, featuring frontwoman Megan Louise, with Johnny Jewel on synthesizers, and Aja (from Heaven) on additional synth (she took place for Nat Walker, who is normally in the band). The group is probably the most pop of the three bands, as evident by their stand-out pop-ish song “Mirroir Mirroir”, telephone-prop for “Don’t Call”, and their Italo Disco cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”. That was such a great cover, that it was hard to follow that up with their closing song, “Under Your Spell.” However, it’s still a good choice, because it’s probably their best-known song. The song was featured in the underrated and amazing Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive soundtrack (we mentioned the soundtrack in 2011).”

Our Italian music partner, Kalporz, via Raffaele Concollato, reported on their show on December 12th.

I’m very happy to see them doing so well. The report mentioned that Orion was the project of Orion Rigel Dommisse, playing “a set with keytar (the shoulder keyboard) full of lights and visuals… which she dubs as ‘cybernetic spacedisco’.”

As for Desire, they played a cover of New Order’s cover “Bizarre Love Triangle” and the encores were “Saturday”, “Sad Ibiza Song” (covers by Wolfram Eckert) and “Drama Queen.”

Again, happy to see them on tour, and hoping to catch the band at a future date in America.

The Barezzi Festival took place November 14-16, 2024, in Parma, Italy. It’s billed as music, art, and food festival, and it’s known for unusual venues, such as 1800s Italian theaters.

Our Italian music partner, Kalporz, via Paolo Bardelli, reported on the Sun Kil Moon show from November 14.

The show took place at the Auditorium del Carmine (on the grounds of the Church of S. Maria del Carmine) and started off with Nòe, a Sicilian singer-songwriter, transplanted to Milan, and winner of the Barezzi Lab.

County Donegal, Ireland-based songwriter Anna B Savage was next. She has an album You & i are Earth coming out out January 24th, 2025 via City Slang. They described her dancing like Thom Yorke (Radiohead).

Sun Kil Moon, aka Mark Kozelek closed out the show. We saw him in Chicago 2013 and our writer said that Kozelek didn’t care or want to play songs people want to hear: “And if they were slow on the draw, the crowd began to shout out their wish list as well. “Grace Cathedral Park! Trailways! Salvador Sanchez! Carry Me Ohio! Glenn Tipton!” And every time, Mark acted like he was thinking about it, then proceeded to ignore all the requests. In fact, a couple of times, he acted like he was struggling to think of something – ANYTHING! – to play… as the song titles rained down upon him. He tried to make excuses by saying that he hadn’t adequately practiced for the tour and that’s why he couldn’t play the requested songs – but that’s almost a bigger insult than just coming straight out and saying, “I don’t feel like playing any of the songs you’re requesting”.”

For the Italy show, it seems he did play some known songs, like “Calgary”, in his two hours and twenty minutes run time.

Photos and information about LCD Soundsystem at Todays Festival have surfaced on our Italian partner, kalporz.

This massive festival is 11 days long (from 23 August to 2 September 2024), and brings headliners such as Mahmood, Massive Attack, LCD Soundsystem, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and many others, to the main stage, at the Parco della Confluenza, in Turin, Italy.

Personally speaking, I am interested in these sort of large events, because they often will try and spotlight local and emerging talents (because these young artists will someday be tomorrow’s headliners).

I’m happy to see that the reviewer, Samuele Conficoni, did mention the opening bands, which included local bands Giulia's Mother, Khompa (feat Akasha), and New York’s Nation of Language.

Nation of Language at Turf Club (05 Oct 2021)

The reviewer didn’t have any Nation of Language photos, so here is an old one from Oct 2021, which we described, “Nation of Language was very excited to finally play their songs. You see, their debut album, Introduction, Presence, was released in May 2020… and due to the COVID pandemic, the band never had the chance to bring those songs to life on the stage. So instead a handful of albums made their ways to writers and radio DJs. They had no idea if anyone would listen to their music, so imagine their surprise when they heard positive feedbacks. People were hearing their music on local radio stations, they were hearing it through indie publications, etc… so the band kept writing and producing new songs… which was eventually recorded as A Way Forward, their second album. So, with this tour, the band played a combination of old and new (future release) songs, as you can see from their setlist.”

Thanks to our Italian partner, Kalporz, for reporting on Alvvays in Italy. The Canadian group played two nights: Circolo Magnolia, Segrate on July 9 and BOnsai Garden, Bologna July 10, 2024.

Details of the second night is at kalporz.com, via Samuele Conficoni: Within the evocative setting of the Parco delle Caserme Rosse in Bologna, in the interesting billboard that this year the BOnsai Garden exhibition proposes, arrive the Alvvays, Canadian quintet with three studio albums guided by the talent and vocal power of Molly Rankin. To open their show is the Swedish quartet Girl Scout, who are just today at the last evening as an opener for the Alvvays.

Alvvays at the Truman, Kansas City (25 April 2024)

We last saw the band in April 2024 and said, “For fans of the Toronto (via Prince Edward Isl) indie pop-rock band, Alvvays, it’s been a six-year long wait to see their favorite band again, following two 2018 KC appearances (at recordBar in the Spring, followed by Starlight in the fall). Extended touring due to the success of their 2017 album, Antisocialites, followed by the unfortunate circumstances of a burglary of demos, a basement flood that hit their gear, and loss of their rhythm section (compounded by the pandemic and resulting border closures) were all working against them. But singer-songwriter Molly Rankin and crew managed to come together and release their acclaimed third album, Blue Rev (via Polyvinyl Records) in the fall of 2022, which would go on to be Grammy and Polaris Prize-nominated and Juno winning, as Alternative Album of the Year. Their seventy-five-minute headlining set proved to be worth the wait for the loyal- with the band in prime form. and a setlist that reached into all three full-lengths from their decade-long career.”

Alvvays will be returning to the USA in mid-August, to play the west coast with The Beths.

We always like to see our USA bands, such as Chicago’s Slow Pulp in other countries… particularly, how they have a bigger fanbase elsewhere. For example, the local band Howler is massive in England (and the lead singer Jordan Gatesmith was dating Johnny Marr’s daughter!).

I’m glad to see that Slow Pulp is doing well on their world tour, having semi-recently, nearly sold out their concert at Arci Bellezza, in Milan, Italy, on June 3rd, 2024, as reported by Raffaele Concollato, via Kalporz (our Italian music partner).

The report doesn’t mention the opening band, which, according to the concert poster is Möly, not to be confused with Finland’s Möly Trio.

Möly is from Italy and she wrote that Slow Pulp is one of her all time favorite bands: “Happened to be opening for one of my all time favorite bands yesterday ❤️. Thank you @arci_bellezza for the hospitality, and to @virusconcerti and @slowpulpband for making all this possible⭐️ Thank you all for the lovely vibes, let's do it again soon!”

The self-described “sadgirl” is seen here at the show, singing in her brassiere. Although not seen, music was probably produced by Matteo "Sigaretta" Brioschi.

Apparently, Slow Pulp’s Emily Massey is a fan of Möly, as they are seen wearing each other’s T-Shirt.

Moly’s new album Vivere a digiuno (Petricore Records) is out now.

Called “one of 2023’s best rock records” by Variety, Slow Pulp are continuing their international tour in support of their breakout album Yard. We were meant to have seen them last October 5, but unfortunately, due to prior commitments, could not cover their show. Hopefully, this Italian re-post will make up for missing them in Minneapolis.

Concollato writes that singer Emily Massey was surprised at the enthusiastic, if not rough, fanbase, when they started singing the first two songs, “Idaho” and “At It Again” (from their 2020 Moveys album).

Their final song, “At Home” was described as “very soft”, but then exploded, closing out of an exciting evening and ultimately puts the band as one of the best indie-rock bands of the ‘20s.

British shoegazing band Slowdive is currently in the middle of their UK and European tour, stopping by two cities in Italy, Milan and Bologna. Both Italian dates were sold out, according to the venue and the advertisement on the concert poster.

The report we got is from our Italian partner at Kalporz, via Giuseppe Gualtieri, who cover the show at Alcatraz, in Milan.

I can’t read Italian, but looking over the article, they didn’t bother to talk about the opening band. I had to look it up, but South Devon’s Pale Blue Eyes opened up the show. The band was obviously named after the Velvet Underground song.

Pale Blue Eyes released two albums, Souvenirs in 2022, and This House in September 2023.

There wasn’t a setlist included, but looking over fan websites, and based on our own coverage in October 2023… the setlists are similar (the biggest change is that the double song finale is now moved to the encore).

This is something new, our first collaboration with Italian music website Kalporz (founder Luca Vecchi, with various editors and contributors).

I have given editor Paolo Bardelli full access to pick and choose what articles he may want to use for Kalporz (as long as credit is given), and, in turn, I will take a look at their content. What I wanted to do was use their live photos and perhaps give us a glimpse of what it is like to see a concert in Italy.

Originally started in Germany, under the stagename Joe Space, the musician Giuseppe Licata changed his name to Pufuleti, named after a Romanian snack. Maybe he’s trying to tell us that he’s delicious… but bad for you. His latest album Perle ai porci came out in November.

Opening up this Ferrara show was Fed Nance, who Blunt Shelter describes as “Italian beat magician.”

Joining Pufuleti on stage was German producer/beatmaker Wun Two.
