Los Angeles band and art collective Julie (stylized as julie) headlined the sold-out Fine Line, on October 14, 2024, in support of their debut album my anti-aircraft friend (Atlantic Records).
For a brand-new band, julie has a massive fanbase, thanks to their socials like Instagram and TikTok. The line to get into the Fine Line, wrapped around the block, on Monday night. It was one of the longest lines I’ve ever seen at this small club. It’s nothing short of impressive, considering that well-known bands have less of a line up.
Once inside, it was completely packed and there is very little room to move around. The only way to actually view the show is to pay for the balcony seating, which was also full. Who knew that julie can make shoegazing music exciting again? And to appeal to a very young audience.
We’ve seen other shoegazing bands, like Lush and Slowdive, and the audience are always much, much older. It’s just very refreshing that there is a new generation that enjoys this type of music and willing to go out and show their support for a new group.
The two opening bands are also new (at least to me) and had really weird names and both bands are from Philadelphia.
They Are Gutting A Body of Water (TAGABOW) formed in 2017 as a solo project of songwriter and guitarist Douglas Dulgarian, but soon enough expanded to a big band, including bassist Emily Lofing, guitarist PJ Carroll, and drummer Ben Opatut. They actually sounded more dance/techno than shoegazing.
Her New Knife, who opened the show was more in the shoegazing line. They had a forthcoming EP called chrome is lullaby which will come out in a few weeks.
