Elephant 6 alumni The Music Tapes graced the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA on Saturday May 27 in support of their new EP The Orbiting Human Circus (Merge Records).
Their current travelling show is inspired by the band’s podcast The Orbiting Human Circus (Of The Air); an interactive show made up of “cinematic audio narrative, song and sound collage.”
The concrete floor has padding and is covered in canvases. We all sit on the floor. The bell tolls and we are afraid until the voice tells us everything will be alright.
Julian Koster (The Janitor) appears. He gives us the warmest welcome you could ever ask for. His energy invites us to relax, even go to sleep if we want. We travel back to childhood. The Janitor shares with us his childhood experiences and a very special red cassette tape. The lights are like Tiffany glass.
We are enveloped in warmth, in love. The banjo hides behind a broom and the saw sings to us. We see the shadow of a bear, who reveals himself slowly. A bird who could be a distant cousin to the animatronic one in Fellini’s Casanova is treated to a serenade by his janitor friend. We watch the shadows and the fireflies.
Julian knows magic, and now we know it too.
