We caught the band in October 2017 and noted that they may be moving to Minneapolis: “The band, at least Eve, also announced that they have fallen in love with the city and decided to move here after this year. This isn’t the first time a Philadelphia band moved here, I know at least one other band, Strange Names, relocated here as well.”

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE at Palace Theatre Thursday 09/28/2017 (7pm/$31) palacestpaul.com One of the most important Canadian band Broken Social Scene is making their return to Minnesota at the Palace Theatre next Thursday. The all-star collective (they have officially 19 band members!) has produced notable stars such as Metric, Feist, Stars, Emily Haines, Amy Millan, Apostle of Hustle, etc. This is going to be a great, fun time. We haven’t seen BSC since 2009 and 2008, so it’s a rare treat that they can all come together to tour. Expect to see these guys rocking together on stage at the Palace show: Kevin Drew, John Crossingham, Brendan Canning, Sam Goldberg, Charles Spearin, Ariel Engle, Justin Peroff, Leslie Feist, Andrew Whiteman, Emily Haines, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan, Jimmy Shaw, Lisa Lobsinger, David French, Ohad Benchetrit, and Jason Collett. BSC’s long-awaited fifth album Hug Of Thunder is out now. Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit to open. The last time we saw the band at Festival Palomino 2016, we wrote, “The band undoubtedly gained new fans as a result of their early slot and songs like ‘Old Old Fashioned’ seemed tailor fit to this type of festival. ‘The Woodpile’ remains a sonic tour-de-force and the band closed with 2010’s somewhat somber, ‘The Loneliness and the Scream’.” Tour dates:

JUDAH & THE LION at First Avenue Friday 09/29/2017 (8pm/$22/Sold Out) first-avenue.com Judah & The Lion has sold out their appearance at First Avenue for September 29th. We’ve always known they were a special band, especially after seeing them for the first time in 2014 and wrote, “It's feel-good singalong folk rock, think Mumford & Sons, and you get the idea. While the Snow thankfully held off until after the show and into the next day, there was plenty of Show to take in at local station GO 96.3’s second annual Snow Show held at Myth in suburban Maplewood and headlined by Bastille.
Opening up the multi-band evening was a local group that literally battled their way into their appearance, winning out over a handful of local bands, for the honor of opening the show. John Chuck & the Class are an alternative pop/indie hip-hop duo (JC "John Chuck" Stroebel and Henry "The Class" Donato) that took advantage of their twenty-minute slot to introduce themselves to their biggest audience to date, play songs from their self-released EP Grow Up, and more than ably stir up the crowd, for what was several more hours of music ahead.
Next up was Nashville formed band COIN, who paid dividends in providing a good spark of youthful energy and fun, in their brief thirty-three minute set. The synth-embellished indie pop quartet (Chase Lawrence-vocals/synths; Joe Memmel- guitar; Zachary Dyke- bass; Ryan Winnen- drums) started as students at Belmont University in 2012 signing with Columbia soon , and is still touring on 2015’s self-titled debut, though a new album is imminent in the new year.
The all-ages crowd screamed in approval as singer Lawrence noted, before they launched into ‘Time Machine’ and then the new ‘I Don’t Want to Dance’. ‘Run’ was irresistible with its jangly guitar intro and Lawrence’s rhythmic near-falsetto vocals and its road testing of the new ‘Boyfriend’ was a success judging from the crowd’s reaction. Closing with the kissing anthem ‘Talk Too Much’, the song has received heavy airplay and obviously the crowd’s ear, as they sang along with the band at each chorus.
Another Nashville-based group was next, the hippie folk-hop/pop ensemble Judah & the Lion, who has continued growing to next level heights, every time we see them live. The core trio (Singer/guitarist Judah Akers; mandolinist Brian Macdonald; banjo player Nate Zuercher) joined together in 2011 with their newest full-length, Folk Hop n’ Roll, taking their traditional folk/bluegrass sound and mixing it up with hip-hop and dance grooves for a interesting and unique combination.
“We’re gonna give you guys everything we have” singer Akers said, starting their thirty-five minute set with the harmonizing intro of ‘Kickin’ da Leaves’, which had the crowd clapping in unison immediately. Hippie dancing was encouraged during the mandolin-fueled ‘Hold On’ and things got a little crazy on stage as the band twerked in line to an auto-tuned T-Pain cover before Akers jumped into the crowd to lead everyone in jumping to ‘Reputation’ from the middle of the floor.
“This was our favorite song in the 4th grade” Akers said, keeping energy high with their cover of The Killers’ ‘Mr. Brightside’ (and making some of us feel really old) grabbing sunglasses and running along the high bar counters to sing the song amongst outstretched hands and cell phones in the air.
Zuercher’s banjo was fuzzed and pedaled to sound like a lead guitar on ‘Insane’ and they thanked the station for their support before ‘Rich Kids’, a song about pursuing your dreams, which seemed to a strike a chord with a younger audience.
A brief wail from the Lion King introduced ‘Take It All Back’, a massive hit as anthemic as anything Mumford and Sons has ever done, and a serious contender for best song of late summer/early fall. With a memorable live performance and catchy songs, Judah & the Lion very nearly stole the entire show.
The mood shifted to hazy, experimental, and more theatric as Orange County electro-pop singer-songwriter Banks was next, playing many songs from her newest, The Altar (Harvest Records) for the very first time before a live audience. She and the station have been friends for some time, as she played the very first GO Show in March 2015, which we also covered, and played a forty-minute set, though she is not currently on tour.
Joined by two veiled interpretive dancers, a keyboardist and live drummer, the singer, dressed in wispy black cloak and boots began with ‘Poltergeist’ (co-written/produced by Grammy nominee John Hill), amidst minimal red and blue lighting and rolling fog. ‘F**k with Myself’ throbbed with its hip-hop beat and Kate Bush-esque vocal effects sung into a second mic and the “passive aggressive” chorus ‘Gemini Feed’ seemed to describe a lot of Minnesotans by nature.
She’s not afraid to curse to make her point, as on the new ‘Weaker Girl’ but speaking between songs, she seemed quite shy, “this is the first time I’m playing any of this stuff”, she said demurely. Tempo downshifted further for a spare ‘Drowning’, her voice framed mostly by a hypnotic drum beat before elevating back for ‘Beggin’ for Thread’, her breakout hit from first album, Goddess. Ending with ‘Waiting Game’ (which may ring familiar from a Victoria’s Secret commercial), the show transcended into the ethereal.
Not a French band, rather a London alt/indie pop group named after the French holiday celebrated on singer Dan Smith’s birthday, Bastille introduced us to a sixty-seven minute glimpse into their Wild World with the opening ‘Send Them Off!’.
Joined by keyboardist Kyle Simmons, guitarist/bassist Will Farquarson, drummer Chris “Woody” Wood and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Barnes, next was the Twin Peaks-inspired ‘Laura Palmer’ with Smith jumping about and standing on monitor speakers to help incite the crowd.
Understanding the crowd was there to have fun and unwind, Smith introduced ‘Snakes’, a song peppered with soundbites as being for “anyone who feels like jumping up and down like a maniac”. For ‘Flaws’, Smith left the stage to serenade everyone on the floor as he made his way through the crowd, with security in tow.
Making his way to the upper deck, he hung over the railing for ‘Two Evils’, from the new Wild World album (Virgin/EMI Universal Records), the audience craning their necks in rapt attention to see him, and Smith slapping high held hands on his way back down.
Digging deep, the band unearthed ‘The Draw’ from their extended first album and the crowd roared and clapped along for early hit, ‘Bad Blood’. With the Kelly Le Brock sound clip introducing lead single from the new album, ‘Good Grief’, Smith said this was the song “for anyone feeling like jumping up and down to a song about death”(which didn’t deter anyone).
Bastille’s abbreviated set wound up with the mythology-inspired ‘Icarus’ and Smith saying to the receptive audience, “We’re far away from home, but we feel very welcome, so thank you” before starting biggest hit ‘Pompeii’ slow and solo on the piano, with the song quickly rising aided by a thumping drum and chorus of harmony voices.
As the house lights went up and crowd filed out, snow had started to fall outside (continuing into the next day, and measuring six to eight inches) giving everyone the Snow part of Snow Show, but the Show portion of five bands over almost five hours, was by far the most memorable part.

HELMET
at Fine Line
Wednesday, 12/14/16, 7pm ($20)
finelinemusic.com
Helmet is back in Minneapolis, touring on their “Dead to the World” tour. The venue of choice this year is at the Fine Line, which doesn’t offer the best viewing experience (unless you pay extra for the balcony).
According to the press release, the new Dead to the World album is Helmet’s first record in six years, and it is available earlier in October via earMusic and Sony Music Entertainment Australia (for Australia).
Front man Page Hamilton’s comment about Dead to the World: “Catch phrases, punchlines, guns, bluster, ammo, incivility, impatience, murder. You, me, us, them, life, liberty and the pursuit of property... We disagree, we disrespect, discourse disappears in the age of access. When in doubt GET LOUD! It's my way or the highway, thank you Lawrence Tierney! Religious tchotchkes nailed to the walls of homes above razor-scarred mirrors. Do you meditate, levitate, pray? Live in LA! I'm a huge fan, got a perfume line, smell nice, plan my next move. Threats loom, the bad news network blooms, fear sells. Just get ‘em out, the spying neighbors, suspects, terrorists our forefathers intent. ‘If you don't like it, leave’ and call it democracy.”
Local H to open. The band recently celebrated their 20th anniversary of As Good As Dead, and was last seen in Minneapolis in June 2016.

96.3’S SNOW SHOW
at Myth
Thursday, 12/15/16, 6pm ($37.63)
mythlive.com
We’ve always been impressed with the Go 96.3’s shows, starting with their first in March 2015. Since then, the radio station created their first music festival called Go Fest, and starting last year, a new tradition of their Go 96.3’s Snow Show.
The 2016 Snow Show is back for the second year, this time at the Myth (originally scheduled at the Target Center).
This year’s headliner will be Bastille, who is currently on tour for his new album Wild World (Virgin / Universal).
Other guests on the bill: Banks (she was also on the first Go Show), Judah & The Lion, Coin and Miles The DJ.... PLUS one local band (to be determined by the Battle of the Band contest at the Fine Line tonight, December 9th).
We've been impressed with Judah & the Lion since we caught them in November 2014, writing “Many of their songs got their most dedicated fans to help sing along, especially on "Back's Against the Wall", where Akers stopped a second to hear his fans finish the lyrics... with the biggest grin on his face.”
Bastille’s 2016 tour dates:
12/10 Oakland, CA Oracle Arena
12/11 Los Angeles, CA Forum
12/12 Portland, OR McMenamins Crystal
12/14 Indianapolis, IN Egyptian Room
12/15 Maplewood, MN Myth Nightclub

SOUL ASYLUM
at First Avenue
Friday, 12/16/16, 8pm ($20)
first-avenue.com
Popular local fan-favorites Soul Asylum will be headlining First Avenue.
We caught the band when they were promoting their new album Change of Fortune (Entertainment One) and wrote, “The band has found a second life of sorts, with former Prince drummer Michael Bland joining in 2005 and bassist Winston Roye replacing Tommy Stinson and Justin Sharbono stepping in for longtime guitarist Dan Murphy, both in 2012. The band’s sound remains familiar under singer-guitarist Dave Pirner, a mix of 90’s-era alternative rock, power-pop, and indie post-punk.”
McNasty Brass Band will open.
Other shows in the area:
12/14/16 Country rock stars Supersuckers, with Jesse Dayton and Gallows Bound, to play the new Uptown VFW Post.
12/15/16 The Sunny Era, along with Tabah and The Sudden Lovelys, will be over at the 7th Street Entry.
12/16-12/17 Local soul
Sonny Knight & The Lakers (whom we just name-dropped with Sharon Jones on our recent podcast) will be playing a double night at the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant.
Here are some shows taking place in the Minneapolis/St Paul area on October 12, 2016.

We caught Kishi Bashi earlier this June 2016 at Athfest and wrote, “I can’t think of a better headliner to close the festival than Kishi Bashi. This band is pure joy. There is no way you could watch them play and not fall in love with their music, which makes it impossible not to dance. During The Ballad of Mr. Steak, the band was joined onstage by a gigantic T-bone who danced, shook his booty and generally drove the crowd wild. The band’s founder, lead singer and violinist Kaoru Ishibashi radiated love with his dazzling smile and beautiful music.”
We are expecting a delicious dancing steak at this upcoming First Avenue show.
Kishi Bashi’s album Sonderlust will be out soon.

BORN RUFFIANS
at 7th Street Entry
Wednesday, 10/12/16, 7pm ($12/$14)
first-avenue.com
Canadian quartet the Born Ruffians (singer / guitarist Luke Lalonde, bassist Mitch Derosier, keys / guitarist Andy Lloyd, and drummer Adam Hindle) will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on October 12th in support of their fourth album Ruff. The record was recorded in three weeks in Toronto by Jeff McMurrich (Jennifer Castle, The Constantines, Fucked Up) and mixed in New York by Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Eric Copeland, Owen Pallett).
The band was previously in town last November 2015 and we noted, “They recently released their single and video for ‘(Eat Sh**) We Did It’. Guitarist and vocalist Luke Lalonde explains, ‘The song is very reactionary to something kind of sh**** happening and the feeling of getting over it. It doesn't have to be triumph, sometimes you just want to celebrate your ability to continue on in the face of any adversity. I think telling people to ‘eat sh**’ is a really obnoxious thing. It's something you feel more than you actually say out loud. The song was always meant to be a bit funny. I think the video reflects the weird and funny nature of the song.’”
Ggoolldd and Posh Lost to open.

Judah & the Lion recently played the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last Saturday, March 26th.
The folk/rock/Americana band’s new album is called Folk Hop N Roll. I thought that was a clever name but didn't really quite know how it would fit into the music. I mean, how could you mix folk, hip-hop and rock &roll music into one thing? Well, these guys were able to mix all of those genres and make it sound damn good. As the singer said, they take the heartbeat of hip-hop, the dirtiness of rock & roll, and pull it all together with the soul and beauty of folk music. After he explained that, something clicked with me. I had fallen in love with the way they explained their music and because of that, I completely fell in love with their music because I understood and more than appreciated what they were trying to do.
The instrumentation of the band mocked something like Mumford & Sons. They had a banjo, mandolin, guitar, bass, keys, and drums. I absolutely adore bands that use traditional instruments but do their own thing with them. For example, there were times where the banjo had so much distortion on it that I would have sworn it was just another guitar in the background.
All of the music was upbeat and made you want to dance. The lyrics were positive and you couldn't help but smile when you actually listened to them. The feeling that the band gave off to the crowd was nothing short of pure positive vibes. I'm not saying that the shows I usually go to are negative feeling, because they aren't, but last night's show gave me a completely different feeling than the many metal shows I go to a week. I felt happy and optimistic. I wasn't fearing for my life and I didn't care if I looked like an idiot while doing my "hippie dance"
Judah & the Lion had one of the most energetic shows I've seen for a band like this. Their music was much more high energy live than on CD and their live show blew me away. At one point the singer had made his way into the crowd where he proceeded to wander around all over the place. I've noticed more and more bands doing this and I think it's a great way for bands to amp up the crowd. It's just such a different thing when a band like this does it versus when a band like Being As An Ocean does it. Last night I saw Being As An Ocean, Joel, the singer, jumped into the crowd and was immediately greeted by a mosh pit. Last night, people got out of the singer's way so he could make his way through the crowd.
Judah & the Lion played a little bit of their old material but really focused on their new album. It was hard to tell the difference though because they have such a distinctive sound. The old and new songs seemed to blend together musically but in the best possible way.
The Saint Johns |
The show was opened up by The Saint Johns. They performed as a trio last night although they are typically a duo (Louis Johnson and Jordan Meredith). Their sound was soft and quiet, playing songs from their debut album Dead Of Night. They also covered “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac and it was a perfect match. The amount of chemistry on stage was immeasurable and made it extremely enjoyable to watch them perform.
The Saint Johns were a great opener for Judah & the Lion. Although it was immensely calmer than what was to come, it was just as beautiful and had just as much feeling and chutzpah as the headliner.
If you can, I highly suggest you check this tour out. I promise it's worth your time!

We previously caught Smith Westerns before they broke up in 2013, and wrote, “The guys played well despite the oppressive heat (lead singer Cullen Omori, who was dressed in an ultra-thin, billowy shirt, looked like he might melt under the stage lights) and end-of-tour fatigue. Affable jams like ‘Best Friend’ and ‘White Oath’ worked well alongside choice cuts from the band’s breakout album 2011’s Dye It Blonde like the spritely ‘End of the Night,’ ‘Fallen in Love’ and a favorite of mine, ‘Smile.’”
Omori is currently on his “Sad Guy No More” tour with Canadian dream pop band Living Hour. Living Hour’s self-titled album is out now on Lefse.
Opening the show will be local “post-gender” artist Suzie.

Look, we just love Jonathan Richman, okay? The last time we caught the loveable singer, it was in 2012 and we had this to say, “Jonathan Richman has the kind of rock ‘n roll holiness reserved for someone like Leonard Cohen. But where Cohen is all hushed poetic passages and melancholy overtures, Richman inspires the kind of reaction that could only be found in a Baptist church on a Sunday morning. Dressed in yoga pants and slippers, with a long-sleeved green shirt over a black and white striped shirt, Richman padded across the Cedar Cultural Center’s stage looking like a Parisian street corner balladeer, his arms wide open ready to embrace the entire audience. An excited young fan near the front held up a glittery and feathered sign (“Jonathan, be my little dinosaur”) and Richman pointed at it and smiled and then patted his chest in gratitude as the entire room erupted in applause.”
As usual, he’s joined by Tommy Larkins on drums. The two are irresistible together.

With singer-songwriter Ben Rector, everything is new again…make that Brand New-
The Nashville resident has been gradually building his loyal audience for years, releasing three EPs and seven albums on his own terms, the most recent being Brand New on his Aptly Named Recordings label, and his recent performance at the recently refurbished Northrop Auditorium on the campus of the University of Minnesota, showed that brand new is just fine with his multitude of fans.
Judah & the Lion |
The evening began with a spirited and fun performance from another Nashville band, Judah & the Lion, and Americana folk band who are finishing their upcoming full-length, hot on the heels of last year’s self-released EP, Kids These Days.
 Judah & the Lion
|
Vu saw the band at a sold out 7 th Street Entry show last November and the group (six on stage) is growing leaps and bounds in terms of their animated live show and growing audience. The band has a blend of “city-fied” bluegrass and alt-country music; from the banjo lesson we all got on ‘Southern Ground’ to the snap-a-long/clap-a-long participation of ‘Water’ that closed their 40 min set enthusiastically as singer Judah Akers jumped into the crowd, raced around the aisles, and ended the song high-fiving everyone at the entry doors.
Ben Rector |
With a stark spotlight on the piano, a solo, suit-jacketed Ben Rector began his 90 min set with the delicate ‘Something Beautiful’ before moving into the anthemic title track of his new album. The sound in the “new” Northrop carries farther and adds some additional punch to percussion and lower-end, each of which benefited Rector’s live band.
After the fifth song, a touching ‘When a Heart Breaks’, Rector took a breath to address the crowd, mentioning Minneapolis as the first city to sell out, when Rector first started touring. ‘The Men That Drive Me Places’ from the new album was inspired by a story of a cab driver, with Rector determined to preserve his story as an everyday hero in our land of opportunity.
‘Note to Self’ brought out the vocal harmonies and then the band gathered around a center mic for a mini-acoustic set, including a re-arranged ’Forever Like That’, spotlighting two members of the band, that both come from the area originally.
 Audience
|
For main set closer, ‘Follow You’ Rector again revealed the secret of the encore- “we just walk twenty five feet over, wait for you to applaud, then come back out”, and after the song, they did exactly that, instead of staying out on stage. Several homemade signs were held high in the crowd throughout (something you don’t see a lot of, especially at this venue) and Rector spied one held by a little girl and invited her onstage briefly.
The two encore songs were tailor-made for weddings, the new ‘More Like Love’ and 2010’s ‘White Dress’, the latter being one of Rector’s biggest hits and had audience members young and old (a good number of families there) clapping along from the song’s beginning.
Rector’s inspired music captures the upbeat magic that happens on an everyday basis, that is often not noticed or appreciated, but it’s clear his loyal fans notice and value every note, whether old or brand new.
