Maryland-raised and LA-based songwriter Jordana returns to Minneapolis this February 17, 2025, in support of her new album Lively Premonition (Grand Jury).

She is a real fan of Local Natives, so it’s an honor for her to play with them. And she’s made plenty of newfound fans, who would sometime shout out, “you’re awesome!” as she played on stage. As with her previous appearance, Jordana is joined on stage by guitarist/sometime keys Hayden, guitarist Sagiv Rosenstock, drummer Blake, and a bendable Gumby toy sitting on the mic stand. God, she loves that thing.”

Rachel Bobbitt to open. We saw her in her first MN appearance in Sep 2023 and wrote, “Next up was Toronto’s Rachel Bobbitt, on her adventures through the USA. She’s joined on stage with guitarist Justice, drummer Stephen, and bassist Isaac. It was their first time in Minnesota, and Rachel confessed that the only thing she knows about the state is from the movie Fargo… “so no one murders anyone tonight!” she joked. Her set included some songs from her EP The Half We Still Have, such as “Two Bit”. Although her latest release is a cover of The Cranberries’ “Dreams”, she actually didn’t play that track. Instead her cover of Sharon Van Etten’s “Love More” was played. This is one of her first cover that she posted in seven years ago.”

It’s been three years since Local Natives went out on tour… and they seemed so happy to be standing on stage, at First Avenue’s mainroom on Monday night. The group announced they were making up for lost time, and rocked and danced as hard as they’re able.

Opening the show was Jordana… who we just saw just short of two months ago at the 7th Street Entry. The two sets were nearly identical, but leaving out the Strokes covers as she had a limited opening set time.

Comparing the two shows, Jordana seemed much more excited to play in front of a much larger audience. She is a real fan of Local Natives, so it’s an honor for her to play with them. And she’s made plenty of newfound fans, who would sometime shout out, “you’re awesome!” as she played on stage.

As with her previous appearance, Jordana is joined on stage by guitarist/sometime keys Hayden, guitarist Sagiv Rosenstock, drummer Blake, and a bendable Gumby toy sitting on the mic stand. God, she loves that thing.

As for Local Natives, it’s good to see the band back in action again. We haven’t seen the band in over 20 years (opening up for Suckers in May 2010), so it’s been a long time.

Since that debut album Gorilla Manor, the group released Hummingbird, Sunlit Youth, and Violet Street… the latter in 2019 on Loma Vista records. Their set is handpicking some of their favorite songs from those albums and putting it on their setlist.

Their encore song started with their new single, “Hourglass”, which the band described as exploring “the difficulty when feeling divided and isolated from some of the people we love most while knowing the time we have with them is finite, and contains some of our favorite LN lyrics. This music got us through really difficult times and reminded us how much joy we get out of playing music together. We couldn’t be more excited to share these songs and play them live on our first tour in 3 years.”

It’s been over twenty years since we saw Local Natives, in fact, we saw them open for Suckers in May 2010. Funny how things turned out for Suckers and the 400 Bar… but Local Natives are still going strong in 2022.

Opening for LN will be Jordana… who we just saw last month at the 7th Street Entry. Yes, it’s only a month ago that Jordana was in Minneapolis for the first time… let’s see how she deals with being back in the city a second time. Except to see her “favorite aunt” on tour with her.

Expect her to play tracks from her TV Girl collaboration EP Summer’s Over, as well as tracks from her latest album Face The Wall (Grand Jury).

Jilian Medford, aka Ian Sweet (no relations to Matthew Sweet), is returning to the 7th Street Entry this August 6th, with support from Chicago quartet Bnny.

Ian Sweet’s 2021 album is called Show Me How You Disappear. The album was praised far and wide, with Pitchfork writing that it’s “bigger, brighter, cleaner, [and] more ambitious than anything she’s done...The album scales heights and punches the air upon reaching them, and the best songs swell in your chest like prime-era Broken Social Scene.”

Hoodie Allen is currently on his With or Without You 2022 summer tour. The tour mark the 10-year anniversary of his first commercially released album All American. We caught the rapper during the tour for that album in Sept 2013 and wrote, “NYC indie rapper Hoodie Allen got the festivities started with an energetic 40 min. set, playing to a crowd that was clearly his fanbase. Starting with ‘Fame’, a recent collaboration with Chiddy Bang, the 25 year-old rapper got everyone moving immediately concentrating mostly on tracks from his most recent self-released full-length, All American, mashing up songs and keeping the set momentum moving (even U mascot Goldy Gopher jumped on stage to join in).”

Although not officially on the venue’s website, we are told that Phoenix’s Belaganas will open the show. The trio (vocalist Shanker, vocalist Joey J, and guitarist/drummer Nick Wille) formed in 2018 when they were teenagers.

Chicago’s Deeper is returning to the area, this time headlining the 7th Street Entry on August 1st.

We saw Deeper in Sep 2019 and said, “The band is usually a trio (Shiraz Bhatti, Nic Gohl, and Drew McBride), but for their live set, they’re accompanied by an additional guitarist. The most interesting thing is that the band, besides from the fact that the lead singer sounds like Robert Smith (of The Cure), is that the band loves Minneapolis’ John Maus.”

Opening will be Louisville’s trio, Wombo, touring in support of their album, Fairy Rust, via Fire Talk Records.

It’s been over twenty years since we saw Local Natives, in fact, we saw them open for Suckers in May 2010. Funny how things turned out for Suckers and the 400 Bar… but Local Natives are still going strong in 2022.

Opening for LN will be Jordana… who we just saw last month at the 7th Street Entry. Yes, it’s only a month ago that Jordana was in Minneapolis for the first time… let’s see how she deals with being back in the city a second time. Except to see her “favorite aunt” on tour with her.

Expect her to play tracks from her TV Girl collaboration EP Summer’s Over, as well as tracks from her latest album Face The Wall (Grand Jury).

Florist is touring in support of their self-titled album from Double Double Whammy. We saw the band on their first appearance in Minneapolis, in June 2016 and wrote, “The story of Florist was that it was a project that Emily Sprague started with her two friends (Rick Spataro, and Jonnie Baker) in Upstate, New York. Eventually, Sprague moved to New York City, but still kept writing music and using the moniker ‘Florist’. By 2014, after a result of a severe bicycle accident that broke her arm and neck... she began writing songs about recovery, isolation, physical, emotional, pain, nature, death, etc., many of which eventually made it onto her The Birds Outside Sang album.”

Jordana Nye, or billed by her stagename Jordana, headlined the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Friday night, June 10th.

Opening the show was 22 year old New York-based, Chinese/Vietnamese-American singer Harrison Li, under his stagename Harry Teardrop. It’s his first time in Minneapolis, and he seemed to really dig the city.

Based on their live set, which heavy high energy with brief interludes of calmness. You can tell that they’re getting more into punk/pop of Blink-182, but emphasis on guitar-driven bands like The Strokes.

The band played several tracks from their debut EP 1000 Backyard Pools, like “Strawberry” and “Soft Serve”.

Harry Teardrop’s most recent single, $2 Bill, which was inspired by the “$2 Bill” concert that The Strokes played on MTV in 2002, featured double singles “Riley” and “Above Or Below”… both were played early in their set.

You did get the impression that Teardrop seemed to like it here and planned on coming back to the area. Word of advice, don’t come in the winter!

Also, wide-eyed and in Minneapolis for the first time was 21-year-old Jordana… who is also heavily influenced by the Strokes (but we’ll get to that a little later). Jordana’s been the music industry since she was 18, when she released Classical Notions of Happiness, which got her signed to record label Grand Jury. The label re-released the album in 2020. Since then, Jordana’s been busy working with TV Girl, and releasing her new single “Catch My Drift”… which eventually lead her to the latest album Face The Wall (which came out in May 2022).

Jordana is joined on stage by guitarist/sometime keys Hayden, guitarist Sagiv Rosenstock, and drummer Blake. Working the merch table, was Jordana’s aunt Barbie.

The band was plagued by technical difficulties early in the set, when Jordana’s distortion pedal pump was not working. They may have had to drop off a song off their set, I know that “F*** You” was not played.

Looking over her setlist, you can tell she’s heavily into her recent collaboration with TV Girl, playing four songs from their EP Summer’s Over.

The Strokes cover was “Hard to Explain”, followed by the last song on the Face The Wall album “Why”… with her good luck charm Gumby on the mic stand.

There was no encore, instead the band left Jordana, where she closed the show with a cover of Coldplay’s “Sparks”.

Jordana’s latest album Face The Wall is out now on Grand Jury.

If the name Mick Turner is familiar, he’s previously from Dirty Three, who we saw in Sep 2012 and said he was stoic: “Flamboyant and energetic [Warren Ellis], along with somber-faced Jim White on drums and stoic Mick Turner on guitar, gave the crowd the sonic feast, songs that stretched and swelled with emotion and with every kick of Ellis’ pointed shoe. Ellis indeed provided humor and dramatics to the show; dressed in what one audience member concluded was an LSD-inspired shirt (Ellis insists the tie-dyed purple and turquoise shirt, buttoned down Tom Jones-style, was the result of throwing up Kool-Aid), the violinist drilled the bow into his instrument, causing stringy bits to rub off and into his considerable salt-and-pepper beard.”

Singer/songwriter, producer Syd, formerly known as Syd Tha Kyd, is headlining the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on June 9th.

You know, I’ve complained about how The Internet is such a common name that it’s hard to find them on the ... er… internet. Now that Syd dropped “That Kyd”, it’s hard to find her online as well…. Anyway, we saw The Internet in Oct 2018 and wrote, “There were no encores, but based on hearing the entire audience singing along, I think they ended on a really high, positive note. Currently, The Internet is enjoying their time hanging out with Gorillaz.... where they are playing in front of thousands of fans every night. After this Gorillaz tour, expect The Internet to sell out even more headlining gigs.”

Twenty-one year old artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jordana is touring in support of her new album Face The Wall. She’ll tour with Wallows in May, then with New York’s Harry Teardrop (no relations to local Frankie Teardrop), and eventually with Remi Wolf.

Face The Wall will be out on May 20th via Grand Jury. The title, as Jordana explains it, “The album title has a few meanings to me. Mostly, it's about not giving up. The wall can be anything in your way. The album is a sort of reminder to myself that I have to face those things, and I can't take the easy route and turn around.”

Although the original scheduled was delayed about 30 minutes, because of the weather... once the music started, they did an amazing job … Nathaniel Rateliff I think Nathaniel Rateliff and his band The Night Sweats have finally made it. It's hard to believe that we've been writing about him since 2013.... Sleater-Kinney What are you doing on V-Day? If you're a Sleater-Kinney fan, you'll be at this sold out show. According to my bad memories and physical ticket stubs, I've seen Sleater-Kinney at least three times, and have expressed sadness ... Low Low’s Christmas show is taking place at First Avenue on Saturday. All proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Heartland. Low adds, “Despite the commerce involved, we hope you will consider .... Beabadoobee Beabadoobee with Christian Leave, BlackStarKids The Truman. $20-$25 aka Beatrice Laus, this Filipino/British breakout bedroom-pop artist put out a new EP, Our Extended .... Divide and Dissolve Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white ....

Saturday, June 11, is the big Rock the Garden show. We’ve previously written about the 2022 line, see details below… but here’s something new: we’ve previously seen Australian duo Divide and Dissolve in Feb 2018, as opener for local favorite Polica:

Outside of an angry punk band or two, no band in recent memory has started so polarizing before ever playing a note, than Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people, and reminding the mostly white audience, that this was not their land.

Similar statements were given before each song played, with the expected crowd response ranging from a smattering of applause to cat calls and insults- but inciting seems to be part of their purpose, so in that regard, it worked. Musically, they play a heavy, low tempo, skeletal doom rock blend meant to incite as much as their statements, with latest self-release being last week’s Abomination.

As with previous events, there are two stages, food trucks, beer tents, and great music.

This year, they are bringing co-headliners Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Sleater-Kinney… both excellent bands.

I don’t want to brag, but we were first to report Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at the band’s first appearance at Bluebird Theater in Denver (Apr 2013): “Nathaniel Rateliff, debuted his new musical endeavor last Thursday at the Bluebird Theater accompanied by soul outfit, The Night Sweats.” The band went on to sign to Stax Records for their self-titled debut album in 2015.

Incidentally, if you ever see a Nathaniel Rateliff’s solo show (which we did in in April 2014), his music and performance is very different than a Night Sweats show. And trivia, but Rateliff previously appeared at Rock the Garden in 2016.

As for Sleater-Kinney, I’ve been seeing the band live since 2000 … with the last one in Feb 2015 after they re-united for a tour. That show was somewhat bitter-sweat, as it would be the last time we would see them with original drummer Janet Weiss (who we just saw in Quasi in Apr 2022).

Gates open at 1pm, music starts at 2:30pm.

It’s been many years since we last saw or heard from Tune-Yards. We last saw her in Mar 2018 and said, “The stage was set with dramatic lighting framing the back end of the stage and a curved center frame with gauzed curtains that would accentuate the shadows of tUnE-yArDs as the three-piece took to the stage for their seventy-seven minute headlining set beginning with ‘Home’. “I always feel on holy ground” Garbus posted on social media just prior to playing the historic venue.”

Tune-Yards’ latest album Sketchy came out in 2021, via 4AD.

Australian duo Mess Esque (Mick Turner and Helen Franzmann), are on tour in support of their self-titled debut album (via Drag City). The tour will stop by Minneapolis at 7th Street on June 9th.

If the name Mick Turner is familiar, he’s previously from Dirty Three, who we saw in Sep 2012 and said he was stoic: “Flamboyant and energetic [Warren Ellis], along with somber-faced Jim White on drums and stoic Mick Turner on guitar, gave the crowd the sonic feast, songs that stretched and swelled with emotion and with every kick of Ellis’ pointed shoe. Ellis indeed provided humor and dramatics to the show; dressed in what one audience member concluded was an LSD-inspired shirt (Ellis insists the tie-dyed purple and turquoise shirt, buttoned down Tom Jones-style, was the result of throwing up Kool-Aid), the violinist drilled the bow into his instrument, causing stringy bits to rub off and into his considerable salt-and-pepper beard.”

GOLD MINEFIELD to open.

New Minneapolis psychedelic rock outfit White Line Darko (Kenneth Zierman, Nolan Juusola, Nolan Leahy, Ben Ouellete, and Matthew Nickolay) will be holding their double single release show for “Turning Out!” this June 10 at the Driftwood Char Bar in Minneapolis.

The third release was engineered and produced by Matt Patrick, who owns and operates Library Studios.

Zippo Man listed to open.

Additional details:

White Line Darko - a Minneapolis-based psychedelic rock band - will be releasing their upcoming double single, "Turning Out!," on June 10, 2022. The project contains two new singles, "Penthouse" and "The Times," and will be performed alongside a slew of other tunes at Driftwood Char Bar.
