We saw jjuujjuu in Oct 2019 and wrote, “JJUUJJUU got the crowd amped as they graced the stage in all their desert glory…white doctor coats included. “This feels pretty damn good right? We work all year for this weekend! My name is Phil and I work for YOU!” Phil Pirrone screams into the mic. It’s not about selling tickets for him. It’s about getting bunch of good people together to listen to good bands in a good place…that’s it. I attest to this because I have seen it over and over- the good people, the good bands and the good places. He brings life to music and the energy together for the fans and for musicians alike. And they also put on one hell of a show. JJUUJJUU is not only an act not to be missed, it’s an experience, a recognition that makes you believe that rock is indeed not dead. As the festival grows, this band grows…and what a sight it is to see.”

Good Doom and Van Glow Light Show to open. We saw Good Doom in April 2023 and wrote, “Opening the show was Good Doom, who played some songs from their albums Shocking Cloud and Welcome to the Ghost, under extreme blood red lighting. They seemed really grateful when Avey Tare booked the band for the show. They drew out their 30-min set, hardly speaking and concentrating on playing their pyschwave songs. When they did speak, it’s to answer someone in the audience that they’re from Minneapolis.”

Southern California’s music festival Desert Daze is celebrating their tenth anniversary this September 30 to October 2, 2022, in Lake Perris, California. Festival weekend passes, parking and camping passes is available to purchase now. For the first time this year, Desert Daze has also partnered with FUSE to help concertgoers put together hotel packages in a variety of budgets.

We’ve been covering the festival since 2017, describing the festival as “And just like that, it was over just as quickly as it had begun. I left feeling elated and exhausted, and as I made my way back to the day parking lot, I smiled in satisfaction knowing that the soles of my boots were caked with the magical moon dust of the desert.”

The lineup is available now, and already everybody is talking about how this is headliner Iggy Pop’s only U.S. show this year. We saw Pop at Desert Daze 2017 and wrote, “Iggy Pop, 60’s The Stooges frontman and who some would call the Godfather of Punk, came out in all his shirtless glory and opened up with (I mean of course) I Wanna Be Your Dog, spitting bottled water and flipping off the crowd and cameras. He was bold and delightful in his punk charm, right into Gimme Danger and The Passenger, then more Stooges’ classics like 1969. It’s sincerely hard to believe this man is in his 70’s. He had more energy than most of the bands combined, and I felt happy that I got to see him in that setting before…I mean who even knows anymore what can happen to these legends. Somewhere somebody must have kicked Iggy around some…and he’s kicking back.”

Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists .... Temples Along their way to Minneapolis, Temples have been building huge buzz appearing at Great Escape 2013 and (recently) SXSW 2014. With all that excitement for the band, they sold out the Turf Club presale … JJUUJJUU JJUUJJUU rocked out so hard core, complete with Phil giving a heartfelt thank you to all of the Dazers for being patient as they clean up the mishaps from the unforeseen forecast. … Pussy Riot A similar story happened with Russian punk group Pussy Riot being jailed for performing "Virgin Mary, Please Drive Putin Away" song in front of a church…

Crowds gathered seamlessly this year into the Moreno Beach area of Lake Perris for the autumn ritual of camping, yoga, swimming and the hottest bands you’ll see all year. In its 8th go-around, this was a vast improvement from the insane parking situation and nasty weather of 2018, thanks be to the gods. Desert Daze is quite often referred to as the greatest festival ever, and in all my years of music festivals (and believe me, there have been many) I have to concur that this one undoubtably tops the charts. From art instillations that will dazzle your mind to tea ceremonies in tents under the desert morning sky, this festival is for the light of heart, the TRUE music lovers, and the seekers. While I was mesmerized by the first DAZE I attended at the Metaphysics Institute in Joshua Tree in 2017, there is something magical about the festival continuing on with its desert theme while adding a sparkling lake that you can drift in whenever you please. It’s also an hour and a half away from sunny Los Angeles, so fellow Angelenos should consider themselves pretty blessed 🙏.

SATURDAY

Polish band Trupa Trupa took the stage first thing on Saturday at 1:30 on the Moon stage. Unfortunately, the Daze crowd were still rubbing their eyes and scrambling for coffee (especially after The Flaming Lips, which I was too much of a grandma to make it ’til midnight to see) so the fans were slim for these guys. Lead singer Grzegorz Kwiatkowski (pronounced Gregory in the states) introduced every song by title, so I know that they mostly played songs from their newest album Of the Sun.  In recent years, Trupa Trupa have toured extensively, playing at Austin’s SXSW, Primavera Sound, Iceland Airwaves, Colours of Ostrava, and Waves Vienna. The song Turn is super heavy with powerful drums, and I would be interested to know the context of their lyrics in a future interview. “From Poland with love!” was the band’s sweet sign-off.

Blackwater Holylight was one of the sickest highlights of the festival. This all girl band are like Hell’s Angel’s dressed in black and ready to knock your socks off. These Oregon based gals had their second album drop on Friday, and they were “So happy to be sharing it with you guy.” Amidst technical difficulties they gained massive support from the crowd, and got through a killer set quite effortlessly.

Altin Gün had a pretty little redhead in a white dress singing vocals with a tambourine, a ridiculous guitarist and a sound that is influenced by the Turkish 70’s. They have two drummers which is always entertaining, one playing the bongos with maracas interspersed throughout. Their new album Gece, released this April is one to keep in heavy rotation and was the entirety of their set.

The Lumerians put on a crazy set with all black costumes and headlamps. Don’t ask me what they played. Just ask me if we danced (we did).

Pussy Riot was packed in the Sanctuary for the evening. This Russian act is beyond political…it’s downright explosive. They are creepy and somehow nostalgic of something between t.A.T.u. and like…Slipknot. The bizarre outfits and masks and slippers…oh my. It’s a heart-palpitating sight and their Russian version of ‘London Bridges Falling Down’ makes you rethink society as a whole. In short…a spectacle not to be missed.

Oh, man. Temples. The best show of the night. These guys single-handedly made the entirety of Desert Daze worth it all. God bless this British rock band. The mostly played tracks from their newest album Hot Motion, while throwing in Keep in the Dark towards the end of their set. This neo-psychedelic band is like going back to 1968, and I am beyond obsessed.

Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists .... The Flaming Lips I think this was my first time seeing The Flaming Lips, but I could be wrong. Seems odd that this was "a very special Early Evening performance", since the band's psychedelic/space rock seems to work better at night … Stereolab Headliners include ESG, The Apples in Stereo, Superchunk, Waxahatchee, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Sneaks, Elf Power, The Veldt, Pylon Reenactment Society, Eureka California and Tunabunny. … Devo Devo is in top form. They have their show down to an artform, complete with their own lights and fog machine and images on screen. With this sort of tight control over their images … Ween Anyway, Gene and Dean Ween are back, newly reunited as Ween, proving that they haven’t quite push the little daisies just yet. The reunion was announced last year (November 2015) … Wu-Tang Clan The entire Wu-Tang Clan (minus the ones that are no longer on Earth) is back in the studio with RZA for a new record this Fall. In the meantime, the group released "Family Reunion" to celebrate their 20th anniversary. … Temples Along their way to Minneapolis, Temples have been building huge buzz appearing at Great Escape 2013 and (recently) SXSW 2014. With all that excitement for the band, they sold out the Turf Club presale … Alvvays Opening up the show will be Alvvays, who we recently caught at the Turf Club on December 2014 and reported, "Although the band only has one album, you couldn’t ask for better surf-pop sweetness." … Pussy Riot A similar story happened with Russian punk group Pussy Riot being jailed for performing "Virgin Mary, Please Drive Putin Away" song in front of a church…

It is said that autumn is a time of rebirth, reflection and revitalization the soul. It’s a time of coziness, togetherness and ease as the cooler weather blankets our everyday lives. For some this means pumpkin spice lattes and dinners with friends by a fire and for some, it means an expansive weekend long music festival filled with a wonderland of modern-day rock legends. It means a perfectly curated playground of psychedelic art and communion with the promise of an all-around good freakin’ time. For some, the allurement of this season is the sprinkling of rock tunes on your tongue and a whole new version of Woodstock. Rock, my friends, is not dead.

This festival has undoubtably earned the title of a SoCal staple as each year gets seemingly better and better. Last year was challenging with the rain and the parking situation of a new venue, but the location is in the same stunning setting of Moreno Beach (situated beautifully between the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains), so this year they’ve worked out the kinks. You can float peacefully on the lake while hearing your favorite bands christen the sky in the background. You can head on over to The Mystic Bazaar, a safe haven for those needing a breather from the enormity of the crowd energy. Here in this village holds all the yoga, tea ceremonies and sound baths your little heart can desire. The amenities and curated adornments here are endless, and there is always some amazement around every corner.

Now for the bands!

The gentleness of Friday starts out with Triptides, Wave, Frankie and the Witch Fingers and DIIV. Brooklyn’s DIIV released their third album, Deceiver, yesterday on the label Captured Tracks. The album is grungier than they’ve been in the past with a kind of Silverchair resemblance to it, so with this drop it is sure to be a highly anticipated performance. Singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt will be performing recent LP Quiet Signs at the Block at 4pm. Fred Armisen will do a comedy set in the mid-afternoon, followed by Atlas Sound and Crumb.

Saturday kicks off with Blackwater Holylight, the super heavy psych all-girl band from Portland. This group has all the elements to make you squirm and drool with delight, from folk-rock to grunge melodies to whispers of gothic intensity…and they’re mesmerizing onstage. Following acts are Klaus Johann Grobe, Altin Gün, Anika, Surfbort, Big Business and the true legends themselves- JJUUJJUU. Going into sunset time is DEVO, Cruel Diagnonals and Lumerians. Ween, Nick Hakim, and Pussy Riot. Temples highlight the evening.

The most massive act on the list is surely Wu-Tang Clan, performing their 36 Chambers LP on Sunday. The crew of DD this year (started by Phil Pirrone’s of JJUUJJUU, who always performs at least one killer set) were smart, because they saved a ton of the most exciting acts for the wee hours into Sunday evening. Also performing Sunday are Dead Meadow, Moses Sumney, The Black Angels, White Fence and Shintaro Sakamoto, to name a few.

Weather permitting (Tame Impala got rained out last year halfway through their set) this upcoming weekend will surely be one of mystery, wonderment and delight. The scintillating adventure of time travel or a portal to a new universe is always optional…but never enforced.

The palm trees were a blowin’ and the wind was dusty and warm on Friday as music lovers loaded into the Lake Perris campgrounds for Desert Daze’s seventh psychedelic wonderland of American music festivals. Founder Phil Pirrone (Leader of band JJUUJJUU) has gone above and beyond to make this entity, in whatever category you want to put it under, entirely separate from your standard music festival. Year after year, he manages to succeed and surpass expectations, galvanizing us with the joy and euphoria that this celestial event brings. It’s more than just a weekend. It’s an experience of a lifetime...

Saturday, the second day of Desert Daze, is the biggest and best attended of the three-day music festival in Lake Perris, California…

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13

Following the chaos of the previous evening, Saturday was a slothful start to the festival. Meg Duffy’s Hand Habits was a soothing beginning, her dreamy vocals and impressive pedal play putting us into a nice little lullaby under the cloud-spotted sky. She has a Sharon Van Etten vibe about her…seeing the two of them together one day would be a cool duet. Just putting that out there for anyone reading this who could make that happen.

Brazilian psych-rock band Boogarins was a little like seeing a Hendrix at Woodstock set, with Dinho Almeida donning a Mickey Mouse in Fantasia T-shirt and grinning ear to ear as he shredded his guitar. I had never seen them nor did I know of them, but I’ve been keeping them in my rotation and will continue to do so.

Mercury Rev was a highlight for me and put on one hell of a set under the dark and ominous sky, complete with almost the entire Deserter’s Songs album. Holes really needs to have its cinematic debut in some desperately sad drama film soon. It’s just too damn good.

JJUUJJUU rocked out so hard core, complete with Phil giving a heartfelt thank you to all of the Dazers for being patient as they clean up the mishaps from the unforeseen forecast.

Slowdive opened to a black and white swirling backdrop, playing most of their self-titled album that dropped last year. The band was really solid, I just wanted to hear Rachel Goswell’s vocals more, as the set was super bass-heavy. It was an early evening for a majority of festival goers, as some pulled all-nighters the night before waiting for the rain to subside.

Founder Phil Pirrone (Leader of band JJUUJJUU) has gone above and beyond to make this entity, in whatever category you want to put it under, entirely separate from your standard music festival. Year after year, he manages to succeed and surpass expectations, galvanizing us with the joy and euphoria that this celestial event brings. It’s more than just a weekend. It’s an experience of a lifetime.

Set up this year in Lake Perris, California, on the grounds of beautiful beaches with breathtaking mountain backdrops, it was less of a desert mirage than in its past Joshua Tree days…which seemed to suit festival goers just fine. There was a rather stark contrast of ear-piercing rock music amidst this stunning scenery, but in a way, it just made sense that people were swimming on unicorn floaties while listening to the tunes of Cut Worms or Julia Holter. The installations scattered around-from teepees with hanging seashells formed into jellyfish to a space-ship treehouse on stilts-gave everyone something to marvel at in between sets or even all day, if one felt so inclined.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12

Certainly a favorite on Friday was Yonatan Gat and the Eastern Medicine Singers. Gat has a rather interesting story as a musician. After being banned from playing in his homeland of Israel (refusing to partake in mandatory experiences like the Israeli army), he relocated to New York and started producing music. He began recording and performing as a bandleader, and in 2014 released the Iberian Passage EP, a debut that maintained his signature raw energy while switching the focus away from the shock-performance style of Monotonix to a more improvised, shamanic musical exploration. This is what we got a taste of here, as Gat graced us with the brilliance of tracks from his latest album, Universalists.

After Yonatan’s solo set the trio of fringed moccasin men hit their drums and belted out their chants into the crowd, while everyone circled around them in amazement. Then Yonatan ran down to join them, wailing on his Guild guitar as they collaborated in what one could only call an indigenous ritual that was meant to make the heavens downpour with rain, it was so spiritual (this concept will make more sense later). The Eastern Medicine Singers are an Algonquin language, Eastern-Styled drum group dedicated to preserving the Eastern Woodlands music. Adding Yonatan’s insane guitar skills creates a sound so powerful that it transcends you into another time, another life, another dimension in a way that no drug or substance can.

This is another thing that give Desert Daze such a rare quality in the lineage of music festivals…you don’t have people that party too hard and are obviously too drunk or stoned to be in public. It’s just not like that. Sure, people are there and there are drugs and gods are golden. But people actually do dig the music and I think, overall…are pretty much only there for it. To correlate with this theme, it may indeed be 2018, but here at Desert Daze it is essentially like walking onto the set of the film Almost Famous. Bell-bottoms, rose-colored glasses and sideburns are running amuck and thankfully, Penny Lane is right there beside him, Sherpa coat and Robert Plant hair intact. But it’s not contrived, heavens no…it all seems to be conducive and genuine to each person swaying their hips and closing their eyes to the music. An idyllic sight to behold, indeed.

Australian band Pond, founded by Tame Impala’s touring members Nick Allbrook and Jay Watson started their set with 30,000 Megatons off their 2017 album The Weather. This track makes me think of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, and Nick Allbrook himself is an alien and bizarre and alive. Fascinating to watch and never skipping a beat, this band is a riot and dazzled the crowd right into basically the entirety of The Weather, and also debuted the song “Burned Out Star”. This one was a true crowd-pleaser and nice little warm-up to the anticipated Tame Impala set.

Ah, Warpaint. These girls just get better and better as the years go by. I don’t know whether they’ve turned into witches or slightly older versions of the characters of the movie Now and Then. Whichever one, all of them have more charisma, talent and style than most of us mere mortals roaming the planet. Emily Kokal’s haunting vocals soared with Jenny Lee’s harmonies and badass bass skills on The Stall, as their opening to the set. It’s crazy to think that their self-titled album came out 5 years ago, and their first full length album Exquisite Corpse almost a decade ago…but these girls certainly stay busy in and out of the studio. They rocked Keep it Healthy, Love is to Die and Krimson (my personal favorite), before ending with their hit track Elephants. “I need a little room to sway”, indeed. And don’t ever let us go.

Tame Impala started their set off strong with the groovy tune Nangs off of 2015’s al-bum Currents. Let it Happen was next, and from the pit I heard the eruption of “Whoa” and “Wow’s” from the crowd, and at first it seemed like it was maybe in response to the trippy background effects behind lead singer Kevin Parker. I quickly realized it was the sky illuminating with lightning bolts above us. Sure enough, halfway through Sundown Syndrome (ironic much), a producer came out and announced that they had to stop. Kevin kind of shrugged and said “I guess we gotta stop.” and they all ran off the stage. As the sound guy was assuring us that this was just a break, the gods opened up a black hole in the sky and dumped buckets and buckets of rain onto us. Torrential downpour ensued (insert indigenous rain dance ah-ha moment here) and everyone started running to their cars to “wait it out.” This did not happen, and eventually there was an attempted evacuation of the camp…everyone was told to go home or (if camping) to get a hotel room. People, suffice to say, were pissed!

Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists, and this year is no exception. With Tame Impala headlining, it could in fact be the best one yet.

I could enumerate on how this festival is, in my opinion, the Mecca of all festivals, but it is really something to be seen by the own eye to truly comprehend. Along with bizarre instillations and an entire village complete with meditation tent and tea ceremonies, this isn’t just a music festival…it’s an Extraterrestrial Festival.

The California-based festival run by Jjuujju’s guitarist Phil Pirrone has an impressive lineup this year featuring Tame Impala, My Bloody Valentine, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (also a returning band), Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, Shellac, Ty Segall & White Fence, Warpaint, Earth (performing The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull), Malcom Mooney of CAN, Steve Albini, Connan Mockasin, Pond, and Julia Holter, Earthless. There are always surprise guests and DJ’s along with plenty of mind-enhancing activities to attend in between shows.

English dream-pop band Slowdive has recently been added to the festival, which will by far be one of the most sought-out performances of the weekend.

In part one, Jess saw Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Ty Segall, and others… This is Part Two.

    This is the mystical Desert Daze music festival that took place in the high desert of the wondrous Joshua Tree, California. Rock bands, artists, hippies and music enthusiasts gather here for a weekend of spiritual enlightenment and psychedelic tunes that make you wonder if we’re indeed in the middle of a revolution; if it’s 1969 all over again but this time evolved in a new paradigm shift of consciousness…and without the over-saturation of LSD and pot (though, of course, there was LSD and pot).

    Since it first started in 2012 it’s been the land of octagon-shaped tents, tea ceremonies and tarot readings. It’s a village filled with artist instillations and children running a muck through cacti and tiny tents made out of tapestry and bird feathers. It’s Burning Man meets Coachella, sans pretentiousness and debauchery.

    From what I experienced (and I immersed myself in all things DAZE), it was nothing but smiles, kindness and a deep, deep love and respect not only for the artists who graced us with their talent, but all the other humans who came together to create this special event that gave people one of the best weekends of our lives.

    Saturday the highlights were definitely Frankie and the Witch Fingers, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Iggy Pop.

    JJUUJJUU also rocked out (lead singer Phil Pirrone is the festival’s founder, I was soon to hear) to fans and friends while expressing a sincere appreciation to the crowd, thanking everyone from the bottom of his heart and saying what a big family everyone has turned out to be. His band was solid and pretty girls dressed in unicorn tassels and headgear danced in front of the stage to the raging tunes.

    Iggy Pop, 60’s The Stooges frontman and who some would call the Godfather of Punk, came out in all his shirtless glory and opened up with (I mean of course) I Wanna Be Your Dog, spitting bottled water and flipping off the crowd and cameras. He was bold and delightful in his  punk charm, right into Gimme Danger and The Passenger, then more Stooges’ classics like 1969. It’s sincerely hard to believe this man is in his 70’s. He had more energy than most of the bands combined, and I felt happy that I got to see him in that setting before…I mean who even knows anymore what can happen to these legends. Somewhere somebody must have kicked Iggy around some…and he’s kicking back.
