Poptone is Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins, of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail. Joining the duo to form Poptone will be Haskins’ daughter Diva Dompé, formerly of the Los Angeles rock band Blackblack.

We’re obviously fans, so if you grew up in the same time period, you really need to be at First Avenue on Saturday.

For this retrospective tour, Poptone will play songs from all their previous bands, heavily leaning on the rare Tones On Tail songs. Expect to hear dance classics ‘Ok This Is the Pops’ and ‘Go!’

Transmission’s DJ Jake Rudh will play music videos before the show.

This is a really solid event. If you live in Duluth, or willing to drive from Minneapolis, the show looks outstanding.

We previously have seen all headlining bands before, with Hippo Campus recently in March 2017 and noted, “The buzz for Hippo Campus at their homecoming show was simply amazing. As soon as the band took the stage, a hundred cellphones went up in the air to record every moment of the band. The audience was generally young teenagers, but that is expected for a semi-rare all-ages weekend show at First Avenue. The last time we saw Hippo Campus, they were definitely one of the key attractions to Rock the Garden 2016. Their RTG 50-min set “wowed the many in the crowd who were there to see them play a danceable mix of familiar and some yet-to-be-released songs.” Some of those preview songs are now available on their debut record landmark (Grand Jury Records). ”

This show is presented by First Avenue, The Current, and KUMD. Since this is an open area, so the show will go on rain or shine.

Khruangbin will open the Turf Club in St Paul... the event is sold out. Brainstory is also on the bill. 8pm, $20.

Remember soul artist Allen Stone? We previously caught him in New York (October 2014) and wrote, “Throughout Stone’s set, he had much advice to give and anecdotes like officiating his bassist, Brent Rusinow, and his wife’s wedding. Halfway through his set, Stone announced that he was now an ordained minister, which “only took me ten minutes online” to do, and had been asked by a Rusinow to officiate his marriage. (Perhaps, dear fan, this means Stone can not only sing at your wedding, but also legally marry you and your significant other, or even do both at the same time!)”

Stone will be back in Minneapolis (he was previously in town last November 2015), touring in support of Radius (Deluxe Edition) (ATO Records). The record was made in close collaboration with Swedish soul singer/songwriter/phenom Magnus Tingsek and producers Benny Cassette (Kanye West) and Malay (Frank Ocean).

Special guests Jared & The Mill to open. We previously caught Jared & the Mill in June 2015 and noted that they have a large fanbase in Minneapolis.

I’ll never forget seeing Emblem3 in November 2013 when they exploded out of custom crates.

The American reggae/pop trio (brothers Wesley and Keaton Stromberg, and Drew Chadwick) will be headlining the Varsity Theater next Wednesday, May 11th, in support of their 2016 EP Waking Up.

Before You Exit and The Ready Set to open. You might remember we caught BYE with The Vamps last August 2015 and wrote, “According to the brothers, it was clear that Wednesday's show was "best show on the tour so far!" This must be in response to hearing their fans singing back some of their songs, including their new single "Model" and an Ed Sheeran cover "Thinking Out Loud".”

Update: BYE is no longer on this tour, Megan Nicole has been added and will take their place as opener.

We love Nada Surf, but after their 2012’s The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, the band took a lengthy break. It’s not that the band was inactive, in fact, we caught singer Matthew Caws with Juliana Hatfield with in their group Minor Alps in November 2013.

Nada Surf is back together, now with their eighth studio album You Know Who You Are on one of our favorite labels Barsuk Records. I’m pretty excited to learn that two songs on the new record were co-written by Dan Wilson of the local favorite Semisonic!

Good Old War will open. We previously caught GOW last Rocktober 2015 and really liked them: “There were plenty of fan favorite songs on their set, fans loved hearing "Better Weather" (from their 2012 album Come Back As Rain), but with a nice nod to Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It" snippet at the end of the song.”

Folk rock singer Lissie is currently on a solo US tour on "The Road to RAGBRAI"... which is an acronym and registered trademark for the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. Who knew Lissie was an avid bicyclist?

Lissie explained her fascination with RAGBRAI:

I am very happy to announce some US solo tour dates this summer! I am calling this run the “Road to Ragbrai Tour”. Ragbrai is an annual bike ride across Iowa that I’ve always wanted to do, so I will be doing the ride in the middle of the tour. Having grown up just across the river in Illinois, Iowa is a gorgeous state that I love! So to make it a reality I’ll be going back to my roots in more ways than one. I started in music playing acoustic guitar and singing from the heart, so it’s only fitting that I sing my way back to the heartland solo! I hope that you can all join me at a show leading up to, on the ride or at one of the gigs after. I’ll keep you posted with news of new music, shows and all adventures soon!

Keep an eye on these this all boys/teen band The Vamps. First of all they are using their rising fame to create their own record label (with help from EMI/Universal) to sign acts they think will succeed. The first band they've signed is a very young band from Los Angeles called The Tide (which they are bringing on tour with them.)

The other thing they're doing right is making all their shows will be all ages and the same prices for all US club dates: $25.

Also Before You Exit (sometime abbreviated to BYE) will also be on the bill. The trio recently released a new single called "Model", available now on RCA Records.

The monthly Communion Club Night just took place at the Turf Club in St Paul on Tuesday, June 16. We have been supporting Communion since it began at the Varsity Theater in 2013.

Aero Flynn (solo)

At nearly the last minute, we found out that headliner Aero Flynn (aka Josh Scott) was now listed as sans band and will be opening the show at 7:30pm. His solo 30-min set consisted of stripped down version of songs from self-titled album, including drone version of "Dk/Pi".

We previously caught Aero Flynn as a full band when they went on tour with Torres.

In between the live sets were songs as selected by DJ Jade (who also introduced all the bands on the bill). She's currently hosting The Current radio show from 10 to 2pm.

The Wooden Sky

Canada's The Wooden Sky was up next, playing songs from their latest album Let's Be Ready, which Dena called "soothing and upbeat".

While they mostly just played straight through their set, they did pause a minute to dedicate "Baby Hold On" to the Replacements and how three members of the band went to see them on their first show in Toronto.

Highlight of their set was for their last song, which they dedicated to "William to Christy"... which a boy got on his knees to proposed marriage to his girlfriend.

Parlour Tricks

My favorite band on the bill was Parlour Tricks; their very first time in Minnesota. Like the Pipettes, they're lead by three singing women and an all-boys backing back (who are just there to play music for the girls). The three Parlour Tricks women (Lily Cato, Morgane Hollowell, and DeeDee Golub) dressed alike, often doing synchronized dancing and hand claps. Really fun to watch, and they had great harmonies.

My favorite song on their set was "Lovesongs", which got the girls holding the stop/wait hand gestures. The song is very 60s pop, and I can see why Village Voice named them "Best Pop Band in NYC 2014".

Look for their latest Broken Hearts / Bones this June 23, 2015, on Bar/None Records.

Tempe's Jared & The Mill drew the biggest crowd, which is impressive considering that this was only their second time in Minnesota (they previously appeared at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis with Alexz Johnson in November 2014).

The band played everything off their latest Life We Chose, including the title track which ended their set. On retrospect, singer Jared Kolesar admitted that after they had pressed the CDs and approved the artwork - they realized that the title "Life We Chose" wasn't quite right. It was missing a "the" in front of the title.

The band noted that Minneapolis/St Paul had the best crowd, participating in hand clapping and sing-along. Judging from the enthusiastic crowd, you can tell that Jared and the Mill will likely come back to the Twin Cities on their next tour itinerary.

Biggest blunder of the night, Kolesar dedicated "Young & Dumb" to the fan who wore their T-Shirt... then quickly backtracked because he probably realized he unintentionally called his fan 'dumb' and immediately said that the song was actually about himself.

The secret origin of the Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart collaboration started in 2012 when the two friend bands rented a studio in Montreal to work out ideas. Fast forward three years later, the band(s) released the session last month via Secretly Canadian.

With that, the two bands will be touring in support of the project.

Special guest local Minneapolis' Sasha Conda to open the show.

The last time I saw London's The Maccabees, they were one of three bands at Schubas Tavern in Chicago (09 June 2007). The other two bands were headliner Noisettes and Chicago local band Reds and Blue. The Maccabees were on their first American tour for their debut album Colour It In.

The band came to Minneapolis in February 2012, but unfortunately it was in the middle of winter so we didn't cover the show.

The Maccabees' latest Marks To Prove It will be out on July 31st via Fiction. The band is currently on tour on the Mumford & Sons' Gentlemen of the Road travelling festival. On their days off, they've booked some smaller club dates - including a stop at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis.

Special guest Two Harbors to open the show.

The last time we saw this Australian/English band Allo Darlin', I noted that singer Elizabeth Morris reminded me of Camera Obscura.... and also they had the world's smallest ukulele on stage.

New Orleans' Generationals is back in Minneapolis, in support of their fourth studio album Alix, out now on Polyvinyl Records.

The band was last seen in Minneapolis last year, which I briefly attended, but noted that turnout was "exceptional" for a Monday night. With a strong fanbase, I'm sure this Sunday turnout should be just as good... so show up early for a good spot and see Los Angeles' Springtime Carnivore, a woman called Greta "of twelve siblings". Springtime Carnivore's self-titled debut album will be out November 4th via Autumn Tone.
