Questlove broke the news, via his instagram, that “The Funky Funkiest Drummer Of All Time” Clyde Stubblefield has died. Stubblefield’s wife, Jody Hannon, confirmed the drummer's death to Rolling Stone, citing the cause of death to be kidney failure.

Stubblefield is best known for being James Brown’s drummer.. their song ‘Funky Drummer’ is among the world’s most sampled musical segments - thanks to Stubblefield incredible rhythm pattern. Everyone from Public Enemy to Run-D.M.C. to LL Cool J to Beastie Boys to Prince has sampled this song’s drumming.

We got an unexpected preview of The Jayhawks' new album when we caught Gary Louris at Loring Park last year.

Louris explained, “The real reason we’re playing here is that we’re trying out a lot of new songs.”

The album is not exactly out just yet, but it's very close. Should you pre-order the yet-to-be-titled album at pledgemusic.com, you are allowed access to hearing some demos and studio recording.

Can't wait to hear the new songs? We're almost sure that The Jayhawks will be playing the new songs on this 2016 show.

Start the year off funky! If you love the late Godfather of Soul and "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business", James Brown, then you owe it to yourself to see this upcoming show featuring Sonny Knight and the Lakers and Fred Wesley and Jabo Starks.

If you're new to the great Sonny Knight, here's our written story about him:

The story goes, if you need a refresher, is that the 66 yr. old Knight recorded his first single with band The Cymbals, in 1965 on New Teenage Records when he was just 17. A stint in the Army, some time spent in the Bay Area, a brief outing with local funk band Haze, and miscellaneous jobs followed, before local group The Valdons were resurrected in 2012 for the initial Secret Stash compilation album, then followed by The Lakers – an overnight success that only took 50 years.

As for Fred Wesley, the American jazz and funk trombonist, is probably best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s and 1970s. His album Let It Flow in 2010 was a tribute to funk master.

Jabo Starks is the drummer in The J.B.'s, who played with Brown and Wesley.

The new James Brown bio pic, Get On Up, is an “I Feel Good” kind of movie... when it should have been “I Feel Great”.  The Universal Pictures release is due out this Friday, August 1^st (bravely going against Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy at the box office), features Chadwick Boseman in the title role, and lists Mick Jagger and Brian Grazer among the film’s producers.

Boseman (a very likeable actor who played Jackie Robinson in 42) admirably plays Brown from ages 16 to 60 and the movie begins somewhat oddly with a 1988 confrontation Brown has with an insurance seminar going on in one of his buildings.  From there, the narrative shifts to the 1960’s, then to the ‘30s with scenes of Brown as a small child, in a jumpy timeline structure that is easy enough to follow, though never quite takes hold in setting an emotional connection with the on-screen personalities.

Nelsan Ellis proves revelatory as Brown’s longtime friend and stage partner, Bobby Byrd, who stuck with the Godfather of Soul, through many a thick and thin, before finally splitting up their friendship in a poignant later scene of the movie.  Brown’s history as a performer is touched on in several somewhat brief episodes to fit it all into the 138 min. running time; from his signing with King Records, to interactions with Little Richard, to even a scene slighting The Rolling Stones themselves as Brown had to give up the headlining slot of the fabled T.A.M.I. Show filming of two nights in the early ‘60s.

As worthy as Boseman is in the lead role (the makeup on him as an aging Brown often looked eerily like the man himself), other roles that went to more "name" actors, weren’t as successful.  Dan Aykroyd as mentor Ben Bart never transcended the fact that it was Aykroyd, and Craig (The Office) Robinson as sax player Maceo Parker, seemed woefully miscast, though The Roots' Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter as Pee Wee Ellis and singer Jill Scott as Brown’s second wife, Deidre 'Deedee' Jenkins, seemed convincing enough.

Music in a picture like this takes center stage, and Boseman does a decent job in lip-synching to many of Brown’s tunes;  the highlight of which perhaps, occurs late in the film as a previously unheard live version of “Tell Me” is used as former friend Byrd and his wife, re-connect with Brown later in life.

Viola Davis is her usual outstanding as Brown’s estranged mother in little to no makeup, but Oscar winner Octavia Spencer is somewhat wasted in a small role penned by English brothers, The Butterworths, who successfully also wrote the recent adaptation of Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise.

Direction from Tate (The Help) Taylor is mostly well done, if at times  over symbolic, though Taylor, who is from Jackson, MS, clearly has an affinity and working knowledge of people from the south.  A few cameos are present as well, with nu-soul singer Aloe Blacc playing Famous Flames bandmate, Nafloyd Scott and New Edition singer Ralph Tresvant as Sam Cooke, among others.

Aspiring to be as great a picture as Ray with Jamie Foxx was, Get On Up isn’t afraid to shy away from Brown’s darker side (abusing his wives, owing the IRS, fining band members, and leading police on a high-speed chase), it just doesn’t fully soar to engaging heights, like the funk music Soul Brother #1 helped invent that has inspired almost every musician after him.

Not to say it doesn’t entertain, but Get On Up doesn’t attain the “Star Time” status the legacy of James Brown himself, deservedly earned.

Shanachie Records just released Soul Summit's Can You Feel It on January 22nd. I'm actually confused about the release date because their press release stated "January 22, 2007", but I think that is a typo and they had meant 2008 (as listed on Amazon, showing the MP3s were available in October 2007 and the CD was made available on January 2008). In fact, I just went over to the record label's official website and couldn't find it listed anywhere!

Looking through their catalogue, they offer some great diverse music genres: Soul/Blues, Celtic, Gospel, Americana, and even Reggae! What's interesting to note is that they're part of Yazoo (or at least related to them somehow), who's goal seems to be releasing old orginal 78's on quality CD. They just released The Best There Ever Was, a collection of of 1920s and 30s rural blues singers.

So what is Soul Summit? They're not exactly a band, they seem to be more of a project by producer Jason Miles. He assembled an All-Star R&B, Soul/Blues and Jam band to play together. The musical ensemble includes: Bob Babbit (Marvin Gaye), Karl Denson (Lenny Kravitz), Richard Elliott (Tower of Power), Steve Ferrone (Average White Band), Mike Mattison (Derek Trucks Band), Maysa, Susan Tedeschi, Reggie Young (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash & Ray Charles).

The audio recording is excellent and it's not until you hear the audience clapping before you realize that the entire thing is actually taken from a live performance at the Berks Jazz Festival! Each note is perfectly played that you think the band's been together for years and years.

I leave you with an excerpt from their 12 minute epic jam song, "James Brown Medley". You'll hear some jamming and improvisation and some great showmanship in this example. Check it out as singer Karl Denson asks Steve Ferrone to take it to the bridge. It makes you wish you'd been there to see how it all went down.
