10-piece ensemble The Midnight Hour, featuring Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge headlined the Turf Club on Sunday, October 6th.
Playing before the show and between bands was Sound Verite’s DJ Jon Jon Scott. Scott and Darin Carr hosts the Sound Verite Radio show on radio station KFAI… playing a collection of jazz, soul, reggae, hip-hop, local, and world music.
Opening up the show was the Midnight Hour’s backing band, billed simply by their three names: Loren Oden, Angela Muñoz, and Jack Waterson. As they ended their jazzy/loungey set, Waterson mentioned, “Like Voltron we will reform as the backing band for the Midnight Hour.”
The Midnight Hour took the stage and you can hear the crowd cheering to see Ali Shaheed Muhammad (famous for being in A Tribe Called Quest) and Adrian Younge in their nicely dressed suits.
Younge mentioned that the group was last in town about a year ago and was pleased to see the same fans returning to see them again. When he noticed many fans were in the back, he joked, “Is there a band playing back there? Because we’re up here!” Immediately the audience gathered around the front of the stage.
While The Midnight Hour’s music is more jazz in nature, there are some evidence of hip-hop and experimentation, thanks to Younge and Muhammad’s influences… but it’s clear that the band can interpret and re-interpret and change their songs as need would have it. The group’s very flexible in adapting their playing.
The band did play an old A Tribe Called Quest song, “Excursions” and a few Adrian Younge’s solo work, but the music is done in a new composition.
