North Carolina’s Indigo De Souza will head out on tour for her new album Any Shape You Take (Saddle Creek). The tour will stop by the 7th Street Entry on October 1st. ……

North Carolina was all in the house at the crowded Midland Theater in downtown Kansas City- but what about that somewhat odd combination of a rising young singer-songwriter whose lyrical themes often revolve around mortality, pain, anxiety, and disappointments, and an electro-pop duo that mostly wants to expressively dance, and just have fun?

Turns out the pairing of Sylvan Esso and Indigo de Souza had more in common than only their NC respective bases (Durham and Asheville) and the 225 miles between them- they both provided an ideal soundtrack to enable a cathartic collective release for the audience- the urge to emotionally let go, move with the rhythm, and to expunge and forget any burdensome baggage, if only for a few hours.

This was our third time witnessing the musical hurricane that is Indigo de Souza, in support of her third full-length, April’s All of This Will End (via Saddle Creek Records) complete with a cover art painting by her mother as usual, the warm colors belying its apocalyptic setting. Not only have the new songs exuded an artistic confidence, but in concert, de Souza, not known to speak much between songs anyway, very much let her music do much of the conversing, no longer shy and somewhat awkward on stage.

Despite some darkness, her set starting with the new “Time Back” added some optimism as de Souza sang, “When I come home, I will begin again” foreshadowing an emotional renewal and then she playfully dared a significant other in “Good Heart”- “I'm nothing but trouble, baby believe in me.” Her appearance even displayed an added assuredness- hair more tightly cropped and flowing pants in an earthy watermelon rind pattern, with de Souza also smiling more than we’ve seen previous.

The new “Not My Body” encouraged expression without any outside influences and a feeling of floating free in “The Water” meant just letting go, but the harsh reality of the themes in her older songs, “Smoke” and “Real Pain” that would end the set, confessionally proved that sometimes events don’t finish as expected, no matter what combination of blame can be assigned.

For married indie electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso, their fourth full-length, last August’s No Rules Sandy (on Loma Vista Recordings, and a reference to beatmaker Nick Sandborn’s nickname) album meant a more personal and less polished approach to their indie-pop sound; and for the fans, the associated No Rules Tour meant even more of an opportunity to dance without abandon, encouraged by singer Amanda Meath’s own joyous and uninhibited movements.

We saw the band as an opener a decade ago when they first started out and couldn’t be more impressed at their ascending level of success, and ever-growing fan base. Beginning with the new “Alarm”, the set clocked in at less than ninety minutes, but it didn’t seem to matter as time itself seemed suspended in between the EDM throbs of shaking bass and keyboard rhythms, all meant for movement.

Meath soon took off her tailored coat, revealing a short and tightly strapped outfit, while the long-haired Sandborn bounced his head to the beats he was creating, surrounded by a set of flashing vertical light poles that synced with the beats per minute. Like the opener, the main act saved most of their “conversation” to be said with the songs, apart from the kind pleasantries of thanking the audience for coming.

2017’s “Kick Jump Twist” gave those dancers in the crowd some body directions, as did 2015’s “H.S.K.T” which found everyone re-visiting the childhood game of heads, shoulders, knees, and toes, but to a modern (and much faster) EDM beat.

“Sunburn” was our first overall taste of the new album, released as its first single, and elicited crowd yelps upon hearing the song’s first notes played live. From there, the pair turned the clock back that decade, to their very first single, 2013’s “Hey Mami” before winding up for the musical knockout punch of popular hits, “Radio” and “Coffee” ...but then, something happened.

In the middle of 2016’s “Radio”, a keyboard sound suddenly dropped out, causing Meath to pause her dancing and Sandborn could only react with a puzzled shrug, before he quickly worked his wizardry to get the song back on course. By this point, Meath had left the stage and re-emerged in her over-sized, giant colorful fringed fluff ball of an outfit, and the crowd applauded even louder for the quick musical rebound by Sandborn to complete a favorite.

“It's rare any more...we've been doing this for ten years”, he said following, “It's rare for me to find a whole new way to F the show up– I found one here tonight!” as both had a laugh before carrying on to finish with the new album’s “Echo Party”.

The encore began on a completely different note, evidenced by a stagehand taping lyrics down to “Coming Back to You” from the new record, performed delicately and acoustic, with Meath confessing it was one of the very first times the song was performed live (we think St Louis the night before, was the very first).

From there, it was one last time to dance, with 2020’s “Make It Easy” and Meath musically asking, “Can't you hear it, that loving sound? It's playing now, it's playing now…” and the crowd moving to the beat in agreement.

A chance to release and exhale- to confess, commonly relate with shared feelings, and maybe most importantly, to move without abandon, embarrassment, or judgment. That was the real meaning behind all the music from two seemingly different acts from the same state, but Sylvan Esso and Indigo de Souza found a way to bring it all together.

Two Icons, One Night--

Arrowhead Stadium again takes center stage this week for the big Billy Joel/Stevie Nicks extravaganza and fingers crossed, that any late August rain stays away for the night. Headliner Lil’ Durk was supposed to hit T-Mobile Center this week, but medical issues have kept him from the road, and our collective heart goes out to everyone in Maui.

School starts August 21 at KU, so expect Lawrence to come alive more, with additional shows heading into the Fall.

Let’s take look at the Kansas City/ Lawrence KS metro musical happenings from August 14th to 23rd.

ZZ Top w Uncle Kracker, Starlight, $35-$99.50

The Houston blues rock group aka “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” (also the title of their recent Netflix doc) returns to the road, just ahead of a co-headlining tour with (what remains of) Lynyrd Skynyrd. When bassist Dusty Hill died in his sleep recently at age 72, fans thought the band might be over, but even after 51 years of the core trio, replacement Elwood Francis has fit in remarkably well.

They formed way back in 1969 when two rival bands joined forces: Moving Sidewalks with guitarist Billy Gibbons and American Blues with Hill and drummer Frank Beard. Their mainstream breakthrough was 1983’s Eliminator album, receiving Diamond certification (sales over 10 million units) which included hit tracks “Gimme All Your Lovin’” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Keith Richards in 2004. We saw them last, fifteen years ago at a radio festival with The Pretenders and Stray Cats, and know they still put on an entertaining show.

Arrive early for opener Uncle Kracker, the one-time Kid Rock cohort, to hear his big hit, “Follow Me”.

THURSDAY AUGUST 17

The Wallflowers w Will Dailey, Uptown, $35-$75

Can it be this long already?! For the past 30 years, Jakob Dylan has led his ever-changing line up of The Wallflowers, who broke through with 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse sophomore album. Dylan has also done some solo work and even the 2018 film Echo in the Canyon whose accompanying soundtrack also featured Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Beck and Fiona Apple.

Outlaw country singer Shelby Lynne is featured on three tracks of the band’s newest album, 2021’s Exit Wounds, (produced by a fave, Butch Walker) and KC missed them on the recent Matchbox Twenty tour (Matt Nathanson opened the local stop), but this is a chance to see a few headlining set.

Arrive early to catch Boston area singer-songwriter Will Dailey, who we interviewed ahead of this show (link here) and be sure to stop at the merch booth for a chance to listen (and leave your thoughts) to a song only available there.

FRIDAY AUGUST 18

Sylvan Esso with Indigo De Souza, The Midland. $29.50-$49.50

A double bill worth the wait- the “No Rules Tour” makes a Kansas City stop on its way to wrapping up next month at Red Rocks in Colorado. The eclectic electronic duo (Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn) has a new album, No Rules Sandy, which features the singles “Your Reality” and “Didn’t Care.” When we caught them live as openers a decade ago, we knew they were headed to bigger and better things (and larger venues too).

Live, expect their handful of alternative radio hits, a healthy helping of the new record, and even digging deep for a not well-known cover from Chicago’s Califone.

Arrive early for another Carolina-based artists, Indigo De Souza whose third full-length, All of This Will End, dropped earlier this spring (via Saddle Creek). We caught her live last, opening for a bedridden Lucy Dacus in Lawrence last year. The new record signals a confident artistic turning point, encompassing eleven songs that are described as” raw and radically optimistic” that “grapples with mortality, the rejuvenation that community brings, and the importance of centering yourself now.”

Kidz Bop, Starlight. $29.50-$79.50

Not to be denied, they are the #1 kids brand for music- The KIDZ BOP Never Stop Live Tour introduces four new KIDZ BOP Kids- Jackson, Kiya, Shila, and Tyler performing today’s biggest hits live on stage. The family-friendly show will feature new songs, choreography, special effects, and the return of the Daddy Dance Off, giving dads the chance to show off their own dance moves on stage.

SATURDAY AUGUST 19

Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks, Arrowhead. $54.50-$354.50

“Two Icons, One Night”- two rock radio titans join forces at the stadium level for a night of songs we all know by heart. Despite their stylistic differences, their catalogs share the commonality of depth and endurance.

Hopes are quite dim that Fleetwood Mac will ever play together again after the passing of Christine McVie (and thoughts go out to Mick Fleetwood, whose Maui restaurant was completely burned down), so this might be one of the last chances to hear their hits, along with Nicks’ own radio classics (prepare for tears during “Landslide”.)

Joel recently announced an end to his fabled Madison Square Garden run (next July) and at the age of 74, (Nicks is 75), chances become fewer and far between to see them on the road, never mind together. As he has previously at recent baseball stadium solo shows, Joel performs on a rotating platform so all can get a good look at the Piano Man and remains in relatively good voice.

In addition to their own full sets, they join forces on the dueling vocals of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and there’s been a touching Tina Turner tribute, though not a part of the regular setlist.

Incubus w Badfinger, Paris Jackson, Azura Amph, $24-$149

Incubus are back for another summer of touring, with a package that includes Aussie rockers Badflower and Michael’s daughter, Paris Jackson opening on a trek that goes to the end of the month, wrapping Aug 29 in Grand Junction, CO.

Incubus last released a full album with 2017's 8 but returned in 2019 with single "Into the Summer" and in 2020 with "Our Love" from the Trust Fall (Side B) EP. Badflower's most recent offering was 2021's This Is How the World Ends, and Jackson issued the lost ep last February.

Trey Kennedy (comedian), The Midland, $45-$95

A social media sensation, Kennedy never expected to enter the entertainment industry but found fame while in college on Vine, amassing more than 2.5 million followers. Kennedy has continued his social media success on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube (his self-produced comedy special “Are You For Real?” is on there) and TikTok where he has a combined 10+ million followers and also has a podcast titled “Correct Opinions”.

Lil Durk w Kodak Black, NLE Choppa, and DD Osama T-Mobile Center CANCELED

Soulja Boy, The Truman, $30-$60

It's SouljaWorld as the rapper is heading out on tour to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his “SouljaBoyTellem” album. To kick off the anniversary tour, he took the stage alongside several music icons, including Usher, Missy Elliot, Mariah Carey, Pitbull and Christina Aguilera, during the Lovers and Friends Festival back in May. S.O.D. and Money Gang listed as support.

Johnny Booth, Thoughtcrime, and Earth Grones, Encore at Uptown, $15

The NY five-piece metalcore outfit is out in support of their latest studio album, Moments Elsewhere, released just last month. The Moments Elsewhere Tour just kicked off, with the band saying, “We'll be hitting the road with our friends in Thoughtcrimes and Earth Groans We'll see you out there!”

Kings Kaleidoscope, The Truman, $29.50

The Seattle faith-based alternative band has released 4 EPs to date, all musically curious and building upon the mainstay sounds of drums, bass, keys and guitars, adding an array of orchestral violins, cellos, woodwinds, trombones, trumpets and vibraphones. There’s also a strong hip-hop influence and a Mars Volta-like energy that makes them both eclectic and ones to watch. Tyson Motsenbocker listed as support.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 23

Friendship Commanders, miniBar, $15

The Nashville heavy duo is vocalist/guitarist Buick Audra and drummer/bassist Jerry Roe, out in support of upcoming new full-length, MASS, a ten-track concept record about memory, language, and the state of Massachusetts and the album will be accompanied by a memoir of essays by Audra, both released on September 29^th, so this should be a preview of the new work.

The ten-track body of work was co-produced, engineered, and mixed by Kurt Ballou at his Salem, MA studio. Last year’s EP, RELEASE THE REST, is a limited vinyl compilation of the singles they released throughout the pandemic, also mixed by Ballou. HEELS and Buzzard Fight also featured on the bill.

Two bold female acts took to the (newly refurbished) stage at Liberty Hall in Lawrence as indie singer-songwriters Lucy Dacus and Indigo De Souza played to a loyal and sold-out audience.

Rising star Indigo De Souza, from Asheville, NC was up first, in support of last August’s Any Shape You Take (on Saddle Creek Records) and proved early on, that she was worthy of the gaining buzz and attention she’s been getting.

We were fortunate to catch her headlining last fall in Minneapolis, making mention of her burgeoning female fan base and Lawrence was no exception, with devotees perched up front along the railing, some in pastel makeup, glitter and angel wings, singing along to every word.

The product of a bossa nova guitarist father and primarily raised by her visual artist mother (who paints her album covers), creativity seemed to surround her from an early age, making her own music at age nine, and shyly but confidently making her own blend of grunge pop and emotional 90s-esque indie rock. The setlist built to a crescendo with De Souza’s voice and angst rising to end with repeated verses of “Tell them that I wasn’t having much fun” (though the audience sure seemed to be).

Lucy Dacus sure can persevere--

Despite continued Covid restrictions/mask mandates (and a problematic fifty-minute wait in line outside for entry) and for the last ten days or so, two painful herniated discs in her back, Dacus has bravely carried on with her tour, when many acts under less duress probably would have called it all off and returned home.

In support of her third studio album, Home Video (on Matador Records) out last summer, the tour (like everything else) had to be postponed, but that also gave the Virginia musician some time to also release two new singles.

In between acts, the screen at the back of the stage showed a loop of Dacus’ own home movies, VHS-sourced clips of the singer from near-birth to young child, to early teenager, in typical family settings.

A long leather couch with pillow and short mic stand and nearby guitars were placed at the center of the stage, with her solid four-piece band (bass- Dominic Angelella; drums- Ricardo Lagomasino; guitars- Jacob Blizard; keys- Sarah Goldstone) framed around her on each corner. With Dacus flat on her back, the rest of the band had to, and did rise to the musical occasion, notably guitarist Jacob Blizard.

We've seen Dacus a handful of times over the last several years, and her musical confidence and audience have both grown exponentially, along with a greater self-assurance in her warts-and-all honest lyrics.

The ninety-minute set started with the new album’s last track, “Triple Dog Dare” and whose lyric, “you’re yawning on your couch” got an early chuckle from the crowd, who collectively felt for her restricted condition and were hanging on every verse.

Laying back and strumming guitar with her vulnerable and self-revealing songs, Dacus appeared like she was emoting life experiences on an analyst’s couch, very briefly sitting up here and there for a verse, before the pain forced her back down again.

The living room-style setting, and relaxed nature seemed to add an additional intimacy, further allowing even the most reserved fans in the crowd, to believe it was all right to sway with eyes closed and sing along to all their favorites.

2018’s “Addictions” from her first album and “Hot & Heavy” which opens the new record, were especially crowd-pleasing, with Dacus growing a bit restless as she sang as a movie marquee with the song’s title was shown on the screen.

Religion is still strong in the bible belt Midwest, as evidenced when she asked the crowd how many had gone to Vacation Bible School as children, and so many hands went into the air before the band launched into “VBS” from the new record.

“Timefighter” from her first record was a rare treat to hear, not having been performed live in over three years with Dacus singing her truth that “I’m just good as anybody, I’m just as bad as anybody". The band would gather around her for a campfire version of “Home Again”, a Carole King cover from her classic 1971 Tapestry album and an obvious influence on Dacus.

Aforementioned new singles, “Thumbs” and “Kissing Lessons” were saved towards the end of the set and embraced as heartily by the fans as older, familiar songs like “Brando” and “I Don’t Want to be Funny Anymore” which were played in-between.

With obviously no traditional encore (the pain of Dacus having to get up and then re-enter, would have been too much), the evening would end with “Night Shift”-chronicling a somewhat resentful end to a long-term relationship of hers, a needed group catharsis for the crowd as she let the audience take the chorus over, “You got a 9 to 5, so I'll take the night shift, and I'll never see you again if I can help it”.

Wounded, hurt, vulnerable, awkward, revealing, and eventually persevering– this was the running message through the songs of both Lucy Dacus and Indigo De Souza, and from the invested reaction of the sold-out crowd, these were feelings, emotions, and experiences that everyone there could also relate to.

What a strange winter- not a lot of overall snow and it’s 60 one day and 20 degrees the next, but generally warmer temps usually signal a ramp-up in upcoming live shows, and despite the pesky Covid, 2022 is gradually roaring back.

This last part of the month has a few noteworthy arena shows- Eric Church goes in-the-round and two concerts mean driving out east past the stadiums to Independence, but who’s better at rock theater right now than Ghost [joined by Volbeat!], and Tyler the Creator is white-hot.

Don’t forget the club-size shows either as those are often the most memorable. A few more postponements/cancellations to note, and the 1D fan base is still strong as Louis Tomlinson’s Uptown show has been long sold-out.

Given the current public health state, assume masks and/or vaccination proof are required for entry.

We’re fans of both acts on this solid double-bill, having seen Dacus in 2018 twice and in 2019 and she’s returning (after pandemic delays), in support of last year’s acclaimed Home Video (on Matador Records) where she mostly looks back on the good/bad of her teenage years.

Be there early for De Souza, in support of 2021’s Any Shape You Take (on Saddle Creek Records), who has a loyal fan base, and already has her next record completed, so is only getting bigger– we liked what we heard when we caught her live last fall in Minneapolis.

This solid co-headlining bill is worth the extra drive to the east metro- Volbeat’s Servant of the Mind was released in December (via Vertigo Records) and single “Shotgun Blues” topped the Mainstream and Active Rock charts and we saw them play the very first rock show at the $1.1 billion-dollar US Bank Stadium.

No one does rock theater any better than this Swedish melodic metal band (formerly Ghost B.C.), as evidenced when we caught them in very different live shows in 2016, opening in 2017, and again headlining in 2018. Ghost’s single “Hunter’s Moon” was right behind Volbeat on both charts and the GRAMMY-winning band releases its fifth studio album, Impera, on March 11 (via Loma Vista Records) and has debuted new steampunk-inspired live costumes.

Kicking off Rocktober was Indigo De Souza’s sold-out 7th Street Entry show, in Minneapolis, on October 1st.

Opening for De Souza was Philadelphia-based songwriter, musician, Dan Wriggins, who normally plays in a full band called Friendship… which Wriggins puts it, “Easy to remember, but hard to find.”

His songs are quiet, sensitive, retrospective … which is in stark contrast to Wrestlepalooza XVIII, taking place next door at First Avenue.

The most interesting song on Wriggins’ set was a cover Utah Phillips’ “Going Away”. I’ve never heard of anyone so in love with Utah Phillips… yet Wriggins has an entire EP, Still Is: Dan Wriggins Sings Utah Phillips, dedicated to the American labor organizer and folk singer.

Wriggins ended his brief 30-minute set with “Mr. Chill”, the title track from his latest solo EP.

The audience for Indigo De Souza’s show were mostly young women, who seemingly all knew the lyrics to De Souza’s music. Songs like “How I Get Myself Killed” felt like it was sung by the fans on the dancefloor, rather than coming from the stage. Her music often reflect her experiences of trying to fit in, which so many struggling teenagers can relate to.

It’s amazing that she’s built up such a large fanbase, considering that the young artist was “discovered” recently by Saddle Creek Records. The label found her 2018 album I Love My Mom and re-released it in 2021… along with new music with Any Shape You Take, in 2021.
