Good news: it finally stopped snowing last week. …

Stornoway returns to Minneapolis at the 7th Street Entry last night, May 13th, as part of their tour in support of their latest album, Tales from Terra Firma (released March 11th, 2013, via 4AD).
Opening up the show was Horse Thief, a folk-rock band from Oklahoma City. They did a couple of newer songs not on their Grow Deep, Grow Wild, including a couple of songs they called “Little Dust†and “Holding Onâ€.
As for Oxford’s Stornoway, this was their second time in Minneapolis. If you recall our our report, I said singer Brian Briggs mutters and mumbles (which was more evident at last night’s show as he tells us little, or rather long, stories about the wilderness, the Mall of America, and playing to “humansâ€). The stories are actually pretty entertaining, but only if you listen very closely.
I also mentioned that they like to incorporate weird items on stage to produce music, I saw them using a real saw (sawing into a piece of wood!) during the song “Farewell Appalachiaâ€.
Finally, comparing this to their first show, I previously wrote that the violin player was “underusedâ€. Not so this time around, we start off the show with a beautiful violin piece before the band launched into “Knock Me On the Headâ€.
Their setlist is not a surprise, I anticipated that most of their songs were going to be from the new album, Tales from Terra Firma, which all the songs (with the exception of “Hook, Line, Sinkerâ€) made it onto the set. The other half were from their 2010 album Beachcomber's Windowsill . You can always tell which songs were the older songs because of the audience’s cheers and dancing.
Speaking of which, the turnout was really good for a Monday night. The audience was a good mix of young and older fans. Most of them stayed well past the three-song encore ("I Saw You Blink", "The Great Procrastinator", and "Watching Birds") to meet the band in person after the show.
Stornoway is currently on tour in North America in support of Tales from Terra Firma. Come check them out for a rare US appearance if you can make it.
