Local band Night Moves is playing their hometown gig at the 7th Street Entry this Wednesday. The band recently shared their video for ‘Carl Sagan’, taken from their new album Pennied Days (which came out in March 2016).

I have it on good authority that Ed Borrie, who I highly respect as the songwriter for S*M*A*S*H, absolutely loves the new record. Based on his recommendation, you should check out this upcoming show. If you’re not familiar with this NWONW punk band, listen to my interview with Ed.

We caught the band in 2014 and wrote, “For the duration of their 40 min set, the band members (guitarist/vocalist John Pelant, bassist Micky Alfano, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ritsema , with drummer Jared Isabella) were literally bathed in muted blue stage lights, which was mood evocative of their easy-going, slightly psychedelic 70s album rock-vibed sound.”

New York’s The Pretty Reckless is currently on tour in support of Who You Selling For (Razor & Tie).

Opening the show will be Holy White Hounds, currently touring in support of their debut album Switchblade.

We previously caught the Iowa band in July 2016 and wrote, “Watching these guys play was hilarious. The banter between band members was electric and the banter between band was audience was perfect. Everyone got involved in the show whether they only knew the one hit song or other various songs from the lifespan of this band. The energy was electric and absolutely everything you would want from a concert of an up and coming band that is about to make their big break.”

Also, be sure to show up early to check out Them Evils. The trio (singer, guitarist Jordan Griffin, bassist Jake Massanari, and drummer David Delaney II) is currently on tour to promote their self-titled album (Cold Black Love Records).

Des Moines, Iowa natives Holy White Hounds made a stop at 7th Street Entry on Tuesday night. These guys recently found fame with their single ‘Switchblade’ which is off of their debut album Sparkle Sparkle.

Tabah

Tabah is a five-piece electric ensemble that began in 2013, although their first year was described as “unique, aggressive, and difficult experience”. Currently the band features singer/guitarist Cecelia Erholtz, bassist Charlie Bruber, guitarist Jeff Ley, keyboardist Andrew Seitz, and drummer Murphy Janssen.

Whiskey Rock N Roll Club

The Whiskey Rock N Roll Club is from right here in the Twin Cities. The trio (Andy, Mark, Taylor) lived up to their proud tradition of being in a band with the “word whiskey superfluously in their names”, such as Whiskey Myers, Whiskey Shivers, Whiskey Pete, Whiskey D, Poor Man's Whiskey, and about 70 other bands listed here.

The Unlikely Candidates

The non-local opener of the night was The Unlikely Candidates from Fort Worth, TX. Much like the set of Holy White Hounds, these guys were high energy. Within minutes, the crowd started moving and grooving to their almost bluesy, southern rock sounds. Singer Kyle Morris had a way about that screamed dirty but when matched with the music, I had never heard or seen anything so clean. Their new single Your Love Could Start a War is out now on most digital platforms.

Holy White Hounds is Brenton Dean (vocals/guitar), Ambrose Lupercal (bass), James Manson (guitar), and Seth Luloff (drums). Dean had a way of commanding the crowd as they played through their, all too quick, fifty-five minute set. To say that these guys were fun would be an understatement. Dean commanded the crowd into a little pushing and shoving without even saying anything. Just his presence made you want to move around the small, but mostly full, venue.

Watching these guys play was hilarious. The banter between band members was electric and the banter between band was audience was perfect. Everyone got involved in the show whether they only knew the one hit song or other various songs from the lifespan of this band. The energy was electric and absolutely everything you would want from a concert of an up and coming band that is about to make their big break.

THE WOMBATS

We last saw The Wombats at the over-sold-out Varsity Theater show last May 2015, and noticed that they have a ton of fans. Many of them rushed to the front of the stage, leaving very little room on the dance floor. With top 5 album Glitterbug, appearances on national television, and recently, over 28 million streams for their single ‘Greek Tragedy’, expect those same rabid fans to show up at the First Avenue show next Tuesday.

Los Angeles duo Coast Modern (Coleman Trapp & Luke Atlas) will open the show. Their debut single went viral on the HypeMachine Charts and got about a million streams on Spotify. The synth-pop duo already toured with BØRNS earlier in May, and now spending their summer with the Wombats.

NOTE: Don’t miss this show... but if you have other obligations, check out Coast Modern again when they come back on September 27th with The Temper Trap at the Varsity Theater! We haven’t seen The Temper Trap since 2010 and is very excited to have the Australian band back in town.

Alternative/indie rockers Holy White Hounds is headlining the 7th St. Entry on July 12th in support of their debut album Switchblade. The record is currently #12 on the Rock Radio charts and their single ‘Switchblade’, looking to crack the Top 10.

From photos of the band, they sure look fun. The band was last seen in Minneapolis in December 2015 as part of the Communion Music Showcase.

The Holy White Hounds is songwriters Brenton Dean (vocals/guitar) and Ambrose Lupercal (bass), who later on added James Manson (guitar), and Seth Luloff (drums).

After a five-year absent, Joanna Newsom is back on tour (we previously caught her in 2007 at the Royal Albert Hall). Since she's been away, many of her shows have already sold out months in advance - including her upcoming Fitzgerald Theater's appearance.

Newsom's latest Divers is out now on Drag City. She recently appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, playing the new single "Leaving the City".

Alela Diane and Ryan Francesconi to open the show. Francesconi previously worked with Newsom on her 2010 album Have One on Me.

We made the show announcement for this American Scarecrows show in October, but the how is finally coming up next Thursday.

We previously caught the band's 5th Anniversary show at the Turf Club and described it as, "Folks all around me were wildly singing along, raising their drinks and hands as they cheered, yelling their approval (“that definitely did not suck!”) and one guy near me was doing some severe head-banging that required his entire body to lurch forward."

We previously caught The Laurels String Quartet as they graced the stage with Belle & Sebastian at Rock the Garden in June 2015. We are assuming that the quartet will be embellishing American Scarecrows' songs.

Going To The Sun to open. GTHS previously opened for Hey Rosetta! in April 2015.

Details:

The summer of 2015, American Scarecrows was introduced to Triple A radio pro-grammers across the country. Stations started spinning “The Peak” and “Gods of the West” in regular rotation. The Star Tribune invited the band to close out their stage at the Basilica Block Party, exposing the band to music fans across the Twin Cities. July was also the month the Scarecrows reunited with the Evening Rig for their annual gig at the Triple Rock Social Club.

Following their 5-year band anniversary celebration at the Turf Club in October with over 300 fans, American Scarecrows will cap off the year with a special all-ages performance at the Cedar Cultural Center, featuring Laurels String Quartet playing w/ American Scarecrows, and special guest Going to the Sun.
