As with previous years, Duluth’s Charlie Parr is doing a month-long residency at the Turf Club in St Paul.

We recently saw Parr with Trampled By Turtles at the Armory in Nov 2022 and wrote, “Charlie Parr opened up with his weathered steel guitar and friend, Mick, playing what Parr called: “The washing machine.” Even with no band Parr had no trouble filling the cavernous space of the Armory with an earthy voice that rose to all three levels and into the rafters of the venue. Born in Austin, MN and now residing in Duluth, Parr’s musical style of folk and blues seems to be from another era. Still, he instantly connected with the sold out crowd with a generous set of 12 songs ranging from a career that has produced 16 albums…”

Local favorite band The Cactus Blossoms is once again doing a residency at the Turf Club in January 2023.

The brother duo recently released their Bob Dylan cover EP, If Not For You (Bob Dylan Songs Vol 1).

Jack Torrey (half of the Cactus Blossoms) said, “We had recorded a version of "Went to See The Gypsy” a while back and we were thinking about doing an EP of other people’s songs, but then it just made sense to stick with all Dylan tunes. He’s written a million songs and he’s always been an inspiration for us. So many of Bob Dylan’s songs are filled with wonderful phrasing that doesn’t really lend itself to harmony singing, so we got together and started singing some of his songs to see which ones we could bend into our world.” 

We last saw Cactus Blossoms at their album release instore for One Day in Feb 2022 and noted, “Immediately after the release of The Cactus Blossoms’ new album, One Day, the American duo appeared at three stores, performing at Mill City Sound (in Hopkins), Down In The Valley (in Golden Valley), and Electric Fetus (in Minneapolis), all on February 12th.”

You know I’m a massive Radiohead fan. In fact, I famously have told this story about my days as a radio DJ at KFSR 90.7FM and I had an opportunity to interview Radiohead during The Bends promotion. I wrote all my questions for either singer Thom Yorke or guitarist Jonny Greenwood... and when we went live on the radio - I got Phil Selway! It was so funny, I had to throw out all my questions and had to improvised. I’ll never forget it, and somehow I love Radiohead even more.

When I bought Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser in 2008, I wrote, “It would seem that the main reason behind why they left rock-pop music behind was because singer Thom Yorke's taste in music have drastically changed since OK Computer. Despite releasing three electronic albums (pre-In Rainbows), Yorke continues to write songs that doesn't quite fit into the Radiohead universe.”

Yorke, with Nigel Godrich and visual artist Tarik Barri, will be performing Yorke’s solo works for this upcoming show. If you’re going to the show expecting Radiohead songs - don’t bother! Still, if you love Radiohead and Thom Yorke, you should be there, at least to honor what he’s done to the world of music.

British cellist and producer Oliver Coates will be opening the show. Coates previously worked with Radiohead, so it made sense that he’s been asked to support Thom Yorke on this tour. Oliver Coates’ third solo album Shelley’s on Zenn-La is out now. If you pick up the album, you should be happy to know that portion of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to Down’s Syndrome Scotland, an organization supporting people with Down’s syndrome.

Due to overwhelming demand by selling out the original date (Sep 20), R&B recording artist and songwriter Leon Bridges has decided to add a second show at the Palace Theater set for Friday night.

We saw the singer in Oct 2015 and described, “The 26 year-old has a hit album, Coming Home (Columbia Records) and entered the stage amidst shrieks and screams, in a dark suit and white buttoned up shirt, with his six-piece band in tow, including White Denim guitarist Austin Jenkins, who helped launch his big industry break.”

Like Haley Bonar now performing as Haley, or Prince as that weird symbol, Caroline Smith has decided to be now billed as Your Smith. I personally like the name change, because I have said this before, I think the name Caroline Smith is just too common and doesn't jump out at you. The once Minneapolis-native has relocated to Los Angeles, but she still has her fans and family here.
