Can you believe it? The Basilica Block Party is back! The event was cancelled from 2020, and attendance was poor in 2021 (understandably still recovering from the pandemic), the block party was put on paused until 2024. However, it won’t be held at the Basilica of St Mary (which is where the event got their name)… it’ll now be held at Boom Island Park. Still, we’re happy to see the music event back, especially since Rock the Garden said goodbye last year.

We last saw Basilica Block Party in July 2018 and wrote, “It wasn’t thought possible, but the weather improved even more, to provide a picture-perfect evening on the second and final day of the Basilica Block Party, The Basilica of Saint Mary in downtown Minneapolis. Once again, ten acts were spread across three stages for each night- the Main Stage (sponsored by Great Clips) located in a back lot behind the building along the highway, a Church Stage (sponsored by Preferred One) out front, and a smaller local stage (sponsored by Star Tribune) . The one downside of having so many bands over a six-hour span is that set times overlap, so it often requires some planning (and maybe a little racing between stages) to catch the acts you want to see most.”

The 26th Annual Ribfest is taking place August 1 to 4 in Mankato, Minnesota.

Gin Blossoms is co-headlining a tour with Toad the Wet Sprocket. Like the big blocks of televisions from the Allison Road music video, nostalgia lives in these two bands with the Gin Blossoms’ first album released more than three decades ago and Toad the Wet Sprocket touring in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Dulcinea.

We last saw Toad the Wet Sprocket in Sep 2023 at the Fillmore and wrote, “Then it was back to the hits, which made watching the crowd an enjoyable exercise. It’s not often you get to see guys in their sixties sing along to “Whatever I Fear” with a misty look in their eyes. It was fun to see a mom jump up to dance to “All I want” while her teenage son remained seated with chagrin.”

California’s Sun Room headlined the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on Tuesday, September 19th, in support of their latest EP Outta Their Minds.

The first opener was Canadian-born Colin Bracewell, but currently based in Minneapolis. The talented singer is influenced by the sound of Bon Iver, Jeff Buckley, and Hippo Campus.

He said he will be playing First Avenue on November 3rd, opening for Guytano.

The crowd-pleasing fun London-based alternative rock band Sports Team features the lead vocalist Alex Rice, with rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rob Knaggs, lead guitarist Henry Young, bassist Oli Dewdney, drummer Al Greenwood, and keyboardist Ben Mack. The Guardian newspaper described their songs as “romanticise Middle England.”

The English band combines the best of Franz Ferdinand (sounds), Blur (lyrics), and Kaiser Chiefs (stage presence).

We saw Sun Room earlier in 24 Mar 2023, and wrote, “Opening the show was California’s Sun Room. The four-piece features Luke Asgian (lead vocals & guitar), Ashton Minnich (guitar), Max Pinamonti (bass), and Gibby Anderson (drums). From what we’ve heard, it’s no-nonsense rock ‘n roll. They seemed influenced by Oasis and The Rolling Stones, based on their cover of “Get Off Of My Cloud”.”

Holy Smokes Batman, Sun Room is basically the Allah-Las meet the Beach Boys! Super sounding surf guitar riffs and vocals from the young San Diego band. And great shirt, Luke!

North Carolina’s Rainbow Kitten Surprise will be headlining the Palace Theatre on Tuesday, February 12th.

Mt. Joy to open. We caught Mt Joy in Oct 2017 and said, “Los Angeles by way of Philadelphia alt-folk-rockers Mt. Joy opened the evening with a forty-five minute set of new songs that properly introduced the new band, and gave these many won-over fans a chance to hear the tracks, soon to appear on their upcoming debut. Matt Quinn (vocals/guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar) met in high school and started performing songs together over a dozen years ago, reuniting in LA to record four songs last year in their producer’s living room (joined later on by Michael Byrnes-bass, Sotiris Eliopoulos-drums, and Terrance Mack-keys to form a five-piece live act).”

Brooklyn’s Future Generations stopped by the 7th Street Entry on Tuesday, October 16th, to promote sophomore album Landscape (Frenchkiss Records).

Starting the show was Sartell’s Guytano (brothers Grant and Eddie Hamilton, and Isaac Hesse). The group looks incredibly young (some of them having “X” on their hands to indicate to not serve alcohol to them)... despite the fact that they’re considered seasoned players now, having been performing since the age of 10.

Most of their set were songs from their debut album I Am Inside My Body, including the single “Fall Back in Your Arms”.

Next up was Long Island’s Zuli (aka Ryan Camenzuli), a singer/songwriter with a weird odd angle slant singing in the microphone. Maybe someone didn’t put the mic stand correctly, but you got the impression that’s just the way he sings.

Zuli mentioned that this was, “First time here at 7th Street. Cool place.” Then one of his band mates said something to the extent that they’ve been here before, it’s just Zuli.

Near the end of their set, they tested out two new songs, something with the lines “I’m Used to You Using Me” and “Getting Better All The Time”. It appears that these new songs will be appearing in a new album.

Future Generations (Eddie Gore on vocals, Mike Sansevere on synthesizer, Eric Grossman on guitar, Devon Sheridan on bass, and Dylan Wells on drums) looked like they’ve been enjoying seeing the countryside on this tour. The five band members have been friends for a long time, in fact, they all live together in Brooklyn, New York. They’re used to dealing with small spaces and long length of time near each other.

Now with two albums, their 2016 self-titled debut and Landscape, the synthpop-sounding song “Out Loud”.

Future Generations’ Landscape is out now on Frenchkiss Records.

Impossible to find on “the internet”, The Internet (a branch from Odd Future) will be headlining their tour after supporting Gorillaz on their North American tour. The Inernet’s latest album Hive Mind is out now on Columbia Records.

Hive Mind is the followup to the band’s breakthrough third album Ego Death (the record earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary album).

So join The Internet (singer Syd, producer Matt Martians, guitarist Steve Lacy, bassist Patrick Paige II, and drummer Christopher Smith) at the Varsity Theater on October 17th.

The venue doesn’t list an opening band, but we think it will feature Moonchild (who played horns the Internet’s Hive Mind album).
