Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros formed in 2018 by Weir along with the legendary producer and bassist Don Was and Jay (ex-RatDog and Primus) Lane and play GD classics along with Weir solo material … We Heart Music had the opportunity to chat with Don Was as he embarks on a tour with his new band, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, with a stop at The Dakota on May 21st. So, how excited was he to hit the road? “I’m super excited,” Was replied. “I haven’t done this in over forty years.” It was in the Eighties when Was formed Was (Not Was), releasing four albums with the party hit “Walk the Dinosaur” launching him into national prominence. A brand musical adventure with a group of friends from his hometown? “There is something about starting from scratch that’s incredibly gratifying.” Was said he was really excited about The Dakota show because it will be the first of the tour and there is “... something magical about that first gig. Because you go in with a Zen beginner's state of mind.” Was has spent most of his career as a record producer. I told him while lining up his interview, I was also researching an upcoming show. And as I exchanged emails and read about singer/songwriter Jill Sobule, there was his name as producer for Sobule’s California Years. I asked if it was a statistical probability that his name would appear and he said, “I heard that some 180 thousand records a week go up on Spotify. So statistically it’s a long shot.” ‘I don’t know what the f*ck you’re talking about, but if you want to make a record, I would love to.’ - Neil Diamond Was has produced around 200 albums with collaborations ranging from The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to Willie Nelson and the B-52’s. Along the way he won six Grammys, one as Producer of the Year for Bonnie Raitt’s Nick of Time. I asked him how does a person “get hired” to produce an album. Was it through networking, word of mouth or more of an interview process? “I’ve only cold called one person,” Was replied. “I had just won a bunch of Grammy’s and feeling confident. And I called Neil Diamond and said, ‘I think you are a great rock n’ roll artist, but you lost your way.’ And he paused for a long time and said, ‘I don’t know what the f*ck you’re talking about, but if you want to make a record, I would love to.’” Was found the secret to producing a successful record is finding musicians that you respect and don't mind losing an argument to. “The key idea is to kind of take your ego out and not think about what you're playing or what you’re doing, but to adhere to what everyone is doing and to be part of the greater whole.” I told Was that I’ve always admired those who can wear a Stetson with nary a horse and asked how he came to find his signature hat. “It was 1996,” he replied. “I was producing a record for Richie Sambora, and we were working in my house in L.A., and he had a hat maker come to the house.” The hatmaker was from Baron and Sambora said Was should get one made. Being receptive, Was showed the hatmaker two album covers. One was a Merle Haggard album and the other, Bob Dylan’s Desire. “Do a combination of these two hats. And the guy made it and showed up two weeks later and I put it on, and it felt like I was born in it.” Was is on his sixth iteration of the original and even got John Mayer to have one made, the result seen on Mayer’s album Paradise Valley. “But we made a deal that we wouldn’t wear them to the same place.” I told Was I enjoyed his interview with Henry Rollins on The Sound of Vinyl and how they believed the physical limitations of an LP - with twenty minutes to a side - gave artists the opportunity to tell a story with their songs. I asked him if he had a favorite example of this and he mentioned his favorite record of all time, Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil. “I really gravitated to side two. Side two really has healing properties.” Was said that listening to Shorter’s saxophone sounds like a conversation. “When I listen to side two, I imagine we are walking down the street together. And Wayne is like a big brother to me, and he’s telling me things to avoid.” Besides being a musician, producer, composer, Was has been the President of Blue Note Records since 2011, an offer given to him by chance during lunch with an executive at Capitol Records, and one he readily accepted because of his love for the venerable jazz label. When Brooklyn-based dance rock band We Are Scientists are back on tour… in support of their new album Lobes.

“Finally — FINALLY — we get to tour the United States again,” exclaims guitarist/vocalist Keith Murray. “It’s been too long, and we’ve been aching for it.”

We saw the band in May 2019 and noted, “Next up was New York, by the way of Berkeley, We Are Scientists. The duo features Keith Murray on lead vocals and guitars and Chris Cain on bass and backing vocals, but for the live shows, they’ve added Keith Carne on drums. I’ve told this story before, but I first discovered the band in 2006, when the band had a massive breakthrough success with their debut With Love and Squalor. Just simply listening to the album for the first time, we were all singing along - that’s to show you how catchy their songs are.”

Here’s a trip down memory lane, details from April 2009: “You can tell right away that Perricelli is an excellent guitarist with his left hand moving quickly up and down the neck of the guitar. It's no surprise why the City Pages called Little Man the Next Big Thing on their cover story for February 27th, 2007. I did ask Perricelli the story behind this and he told me that they had sent someone over the house to interview and take some photographs. He honestly didn't know it was going to be a cover story, so he was a little shocked when he learned about it. ”

The singer is best known for her recording of “One of Us” from her debut album Relish in 1995 …

American singer/songwriter Joan Osborne shot into fame with her recorded song “One Of Us” (written by Eric Bazilian), from her debut album Relish, in 1995. The song poses the question, what if God was one of us, just trying to find his way home.

The single was certified Gold and earning three Grammy nominations. The song was so popular, even Prince covered the song on his album Emancipation in 1996.

Since then she’s been busy being a voice for women in rock, co-headlining the Lilith Fair in 1997, and actively supporting Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

She shifted to covering songs she loves, a cover-lover album Bring It on Home in 2012, and an entire album of Bob Dylan songs called Songs of Bob Dylan in 2017.

This is important to note, as a lot of songs on her set were cover songs.

Osborne’s latest album, Nobody Owns You (Womanly Hips Records) is a return to form for original songs… and they are very good, at least what I’ve heard live. “I Should've Danced More” is fantastic, it’s a song about some regrets she may have had. She should have danced more, she should have loved more, etc. The message is clear, do what you love while you can now.

I think the song is a reflection of what happened to all of us in 2020 when the pandemic hit and we lost the ability to gather and celebrate music. In some ways, Osborne seemed so genuinely happy to be back on stage, playing live music again. She’s joined on stage by a pianist and guitarist (Jack Petruzzelli) … which she was very playful with back-and-forth guitar playing on “Trouble and Strife”.

She thanked the audience at the Dakota for being so quiet, you can hear a pin drop. Someone in the audience shouted, “It’s Minnesota!” which Osborne replied, “Oh I know! I’ve played here before, I don’t want you guys to exert yourselves!”

Of course, her most famous song, “One of Us”, was saved as the penultimate song. The quiet crowd suddenly exploded with massive audience cheers and claps.

Osborne’s latest Nobody Owns You is out now on Womanly Hips Records.

Harpist Mikaela Davis headlined the Turf Club in St Paul on Thursday night.

Opening the show was Minneapolis-based Ryan Gebhardt. Originally from New York, with his band The Humble Cheaters, but he decided to go solo with his self-debut LP, Stanley, in 2017, with his move to Minneapolis.

We first heard of him when he opened for Alice Phoebe Lou in Feb 2022.

About half-way into the show, before “Monday Lover”, Ryan announced a special guest, Sarah Mevissen, from Pit Stop, to help sing the remainder of the set. We actually like Pit Stop, having randomly caught them a few times in 2022, so this appearance was a real treat.

Songwriter and harpist Mikaela Davis closed out the night. You don’t normally see a giant harp in this type of rock venue. I’m not trying to discourage it, but it’s hard to appreciate chamber music or orchestra in a noisy bar setting. Maybe it’ll be better at the Cedar Cultural Center, which she did play in Oct 2014, where the audience would be of the NPR variety.

If you didn’t know, Davis first found fame when she covered Elliott Smith’s “Twilight”, using her harp, which is a unique take on the song.

Mikaela Davis, with her full band, featuring Alex Coté on drums, Cian McCarthy on guitars/vocals, Shane McCarthy on bass/vocals, and Kurt Johnson on steel guitar, is currently touring in support of her Kill Rock Stars debut And Southern Star.

As part of the touring promotion, Davis did a meet and greet at Down in the Valley record store in Golden Valley the day prior. This is a great way for fans to meet their favorite artist. Davis, adding, “Thanks to all who came to my in-store at Down In The Valley and bought a record/ CD 💿”.

At her show at the Turf Club, Mikaela Davis mistakenly announced that this was their first ever headline show in the Twin Cities… but her guitarist quickly corrected her, “We played the 7th Street Entry, a long ass time ago.” (they headlined the 7th Street in Minneapolis on October 23, 2018, with Dem Yuut as opener).

She knew the difference between St Paul and Minneapolis, of course, telling us that they originally listed the Turf Club as “Minneapolis” on the tour poster. She noticed and thought that no one would care… but at the last minute decided to “hold the press!” and made the correction on the tour poster to “St Paul.” So, the moral of the story is that they worked hard on the poster, that you should buy one.

Davis ended her set with a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Candyman”. What I think happened was Bob Weir called up Mikaela Davis on his residency in New York, and she joined the The Wolf Pack (the band with a horns and strings section), and she played on the remainder of his set, including “Candyman.”

Mikaela Davis came back for the encore to play an early 2016 single, “Pure Divine Love”. The lyrics of the song was actually co-written by drummer Alex Cote, with the chorus of “Pure divine love is here, love of mine have no fear. You found me.”

After this headlining 2023 tour ends tomorrow (August 20th at Space in Illinois), she’ll be opening for The Mountain Goats throughout October… or as we like to call it, Rocktober.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra is touring in support of their upcoming double album V (Jagjaguwar)… selling out First Avenue, in Minneapolis, on Friday night.

Opening the show was Miami’s Seafoam Walls, playing a 45-min set of songs from their debut album, XVI, which came out in 2021 via The Daydream Library Series, the house record label of Ecstatic Peace Library operated by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) & Eva Prinz.

Originally formed in 2014 by singer and guitarist Jayan Bertrand, Seafoam Walls added bassist Joshua Ewers, multi-instrumentalist Dion Kerr and drummer Josue Vargas. By the time the debut album was written and recorded, it turned out to be a deeply personal record for Bertrand, who wrote that the album was “dedicated to the memory of my father and all the people we’ve lost. My father was born on October 16th and I September 16th. Aside from the artistry I inherited from him, I always felt like that number kept us connected.”

Listening to the band play, it was a very laid-back jazz and Caribbean rhythm… which is perfect for the band, as Seafoam Walls is conjure up a relaxing image within a seafoam green room. In fact, the band self-described themselves as “jazzgaze”, a play off of shoegaze.

I would have to say that perhaps it was sound difficulties, but it was hard to hear Bertrand (dressed in the shag jacket) him sing or speak in the first few songs. By the time they played the “celebration” track (which they used to describe “You Can't Have Your Cake and Ego Too (Happy Birthday)”), they might have fixed the problem.

We’ve seen the band before (a few times), the last time, in June 2013, we said, “Unknown Mortal Orchestra's first headlining show in Minneapolis took place last night at the Cedar Cultural Center, according to singer Ruban Nielson. The Portland-based band previously played with Solid Gold for "Into the Black" (art gallery in Minneapolis) in June 2012, and a month later, returned to the city supporting Liars.”

The old saying that “March roars in like a lion” is true, at least in terms of KC-area concerts, as it’s a pretty full first week of shows. It’s still the crazy time of years when temps are 60 and sunny one day, then 30 and overcast the next, so plan accordingly, but don’t fret- outdoor shows return sooner than you know it.

Let’s take look at the Kansas City/Lawrence KS metro musical happenings from March 1st-8th.

A must band to see at least once! After a successful tour last year with Toadies and Nashville Pussy (we caught ‘em last October in Minneapolis), rock’s best modern rockabilly/psychobilly trio returns with a new headlining run of their own.

Reverend Horton Heat led by Jim Heath have been innovating the genre for almost four decades, leading to 12 full-length albums, 3 “best-of” collections, 2 DVD releases and thousands of live performances. Heath and Jimbo Wallace along with new drummer Jonathan Jeter are true road dogs and always find a way to deliver with their live performance.

David Ramirez w Dylan LeBlanc, Knuckleheads,$20

The Austin TX Americana singer-songwriter stayed prolific during the pandemic, releasing My Love is a Hurricane in 2020 and following that up with sixth full-length, Backslider, in 2021.

Early albums like American Soil(2009) and Apologies(2012) put him on the map first locally then beyond, while his STRANGETOWN(2011) and The Rooster(2013) EPs delivered fan-favorite recordings, “Shoeboxes” and “The Bad Days respectively, that are staple singalongs at his concerts.

Muscle Shoals, AL native Dylan LeBlanc’s latest record is 2019’s Renegade, on Dave Matthews’ label, ATO Records, so expect a healthy helping of songs from that, and his three previous releases.

The band takes their name after a “love hotel” in Osaka and the quartet (singer/guitarist Accorinrin, guitarist Yoyoyoshie, bassist Hirochan, and drummer Kahokiss), have a new record, 2022’s Super Champion, to support, and are marking their first full length tour of North America, which will continue across Europe into 2023, and is recommended for Shonen Knife and riot grrrl fans. White Reaper, Madrid Theatre, $25-$50

White Reaper just released their fourth and latest album, Asking for a Ride, along with its debut single “Pages”. The Louisville rockers recorded and almost entirely self-produced the new set in Nashville with engineer Jeremy Ferguson. We first caught the Louisville garage rockers back in 2015 in MN.

Katy Guillen and The Drive w Frogpond, Knuckleheads,$15

A local bluesy rock treasure! KC’s own Katy Guillen & The Drive is founded on the creative spark and chemistry between Katy Guillen and Stephanie Williams, with Guillen on guitar / vocals and Williams on drums. After collaborating together in Katy Guillen & The Girls, the pair forged ahead with a melodic, heavy, and soulful sound while maintaining their rock ‘n' roll / blues roots on the new album called Another One Gained. We saw them right before Christmas in Lawrence and definitely came away impressed, especially by Guillen’s Flemenco-influenced solos.

Frogpond is a familiar name, known around these parts since the 90’s and fills out this female-empowered night of rock.

The two-time Grammy-nominated duo, brought to life by Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste, invokes a mystifying musical fusion of classical sounds and hip-hop beats. A concert performance that will merge centuries of music with a message of hope and possibility.

On stage, Marcus gives an electrifying violin performance along with Baptiste’s viola and vocal performance and joining them are Nat Stokes on drums, DJ SPS on the turntable, and Liston Gregory on keys.

Bobby Weir and The Wolf Bros, The Midland,$39.75-$99.75

Deadheads unite! Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros formed in 2018 by Weir along with the legendary producer and bassist Don Was and Jay (ex-RatDog and Primus) Lane and play GD classics along with Weir solo material. In 2020, Jeff Chimenti joined the Wolf Bros and is also now joined by Barry Sless on pedal steel.

They recently released their first ever vinyl collection of recorded material, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros: Live in Colorado, on Third Man Records. The two volume set, produced by Weir, Was and Lane, features a collection of songs recorded during the band’s performances at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO and the Ford Amphitheater in Vail,

After some pandemic delays, the Canadian alt-rock band is reuniting for the first time in 17-years to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their seminal sophomore album, God Shuffled His Feet, featuring the original line-up of Brad Roberts, Ellen Reid, Dan Roberts, and Mitch Dorge.

Says bandleader Roberts, “It was a wild ride for us that year. Now we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary reuniting with our original line-up and dusting off our old set lists. It will be the first time we’ve toured with the full band since 2001, and we’re very excited about it.” The 1993 platinum-selling Grammy-nominated album hit #9 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart and features their most unusual and popular singles, “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” and “Superman.”

Among Johnson’s many accolades are a Grammy award for “Cliffs of Dover” (a track from his Platinum certified Ah Via Musicom), ten more Grammy nominations, lifetime induction into the Guitar Player Gallery of Greats and his listing among the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century” by Musician magazine.

While in high school, he discovered electronic music and became enamored with the scene. Fusing his blend of cutting-edge sound design with hard-hitting bass, Subtronics seeks to push the envelope with sound engineering.

In January 2022, he dropped his debut album ‘FRACTALS’ which came in at #4 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Album Chart. The album coincided with his 50+ date national headline FRACTAL TOUR, which featured state-of-the-art production and ground-breaking visuals, traveling with a custom-built stage, featuring a floating DJ table within a reflective black hole, dubbed ‘The Wormhole.’

Elle King w Red Clay Strays, Uptown, $39.50

Elle King has continued to do things her way, with a unique style that encompasses country, soul, rock and blues. King is a four-time Grammy Award nominee, two each in the rock and country categories, and received honors from the Country Music Association Awards and the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Latest release is the cheekily-named Come Get Your Wife released in January and is more country-tinged, with King ready for her own headlining A Freakin-Men tour, after several dates with Chris Stapleton last year.

We caught her live, early on back in 2015 in Minneapolis, and knew even back then, how driven and fiercely independent she seemed to be. South Alabama rockers Red Clay Strays to open, in support of new full-length, Moment of Truth.

Apparently the song isn’t that new - Wolf would perform “Liz” at her live shows, but only recently decide to release an official version as a thank you to her loyal fans: “I wanted to share “Liz" as a gift to my little Remjobs who have been with me since the beginning and have been asking for this song everyday over the last few years. I’ve been performing “Liz" on tour for forever and to finally have a studio version I’m proud of and can share with my OG babies feels like a weight has been lifted off my chest. MASKED WOLF maskedwolf.com Australian rapper Masked Wolf recently dropped his brand new track “Gravity Glidin’.” Masked Wolf described the song, “‘Gravity Glidin’ is the response to Astro. Where ‘Astronaut In The Ocean’ is about not being where I should be, this song is about me feeling like I’ve found my place and finally gliding through the environment I was born to be in.” Masked Wolf is referring to his Top 40 (at #10) radio hit song “Astronaut In The Ocean”. In addition, the song spent 14 weeks in Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #6 and holding at #11.

SKOTT skottmusic.com “Wolf” (acoustic version) is the new single from critically acclaimed Swedish singer, songwriter, and producer Skott. The song is taken from her Chapter I (Acoustic) EP. Apparently, the stripped-down “Wolf” version was a result of Katy Perry, as Skott said, “I wrote it about the lonely sound of heartbreak, and then all of a sudden Katy Perry’s tweeting me about it. I wanted to make a stripped down version where the lyrics have even more room to do their thing, in a calmer landscape than the more orchestral-ish original. This has always been my favorite song to sing live.”

Poet, lyricist, and musician Robert Hunter has died at the age of 78. He was most famous for writing for The Grateful Dead.

Hunter knew Jerry Garcia in 1961, prior to forming The Grateful Dead (briefly known as The Warlocks) in 1965. Hunter wrote the lyrics for three of the Grateful Dead’s early hits, including “China Cat Sunflower”, “St. Stephen”, and “Alligator”.

We love Australia’s San Cisco. We’ve seen the band over 10 times (see our timeline on the sidebar).

For promotion for their third album The Water, the band was supposed to play Minneapolis - but unfortunately, at the last minute they had to cancel their 7th Street Entry in 2017. After two years, they band will be back - hopefully to play some of those The Water tracks!

Show up early to check out Western Australian artist Carla Geneve, touring in support of her debut self-titled EP that came out yesterday (June 7th) via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. Geneve came on the music scene with her debut single “Greg’s Discount Chemist” was released to overwhelming local radio Triple J.

Talking about her video for the lead single, “Yesterday’s Clothes,” (from the debut self-titled EP), she said, “I wanted the video to reflect the personal nature of the song. To me, sitting alone in front of a camera is a vulnerable situation, a lot like releasing a song to the world which describes private parts of my life. The song is about falling out of love with someone and feeling guilty about it. I wrote it at a time when I was burning the candle at both ends and had no energy left to try to deal with the end of a relationship. Most of the words came when I was doing a long drive back from some gig or another in regional WA. I’d been up all night and had to be somewhere the next day, so I hadn’t had a shower or changed clothes. ”

In their most extensive US tour, Circles Around The Sun (CATS) will be stopping by the Turf Club on Sunday, June 16th, in support of their double album Let It Wander (Rhino Records).

No opening band listed, but considering they have a double album … playing a double set might not be a problem for this band.

Trivia: Did you know that CATS was only supposed to record a handful of Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead's "Fare Thee Well" concerts in 2015? The response was so positive and the fans demanded it - so the band continued making music together all these years.

New York’s Charly Bliss is back in town, headlining the 7th Street Entry this June 16th in support of their sophomore album Young Enough (Barsuk Records). This show is sold out.

We saw Charly Bliss in May 2017 and wrote, “Though they’ve been a band for half a decade, it seems like the time is now for Charly Bliss, the four-piece breaking through to alternative radio and singer Eva Hendricks was in full celebration mode, even dressing in a fetching white dress, reminiscent of Doll Parts-era Courtney Love. The group is in support of debut full length, Guppy (Barsuk Records) released just a couple weeks ago, with the Onion’s AV Club already deeming it “an instant classic”. The band’s sound is akin to the likes of Sleater-Kinney and Veruca Salt (who they’ve both toured with) and consists of Hendricks, her older brother Sam, bassist (and former boyfriend) Dan Shure, and guitarist Spencer Fox, who she met at age fifteen and who actually voiced Dash in Disney’s The Incredibles and Mudbud in Air Buddies.”
