The dream of the Riot Grrrl ‘90s scene is still alive, and you’re in luck, ‘cos one of the stalwarts of the scene, Bikini Kill, is on tour this year in the U.S. and abroad. After a springtime South American tour, followed by a visit to Europe and the UK, the band hits the road all over the U.S., hitting different cities throughout the West Coast, Midwest, and Eastern seaboard. Guitarist Sara Landeau joins founding members Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Kathi Wilcox, so expect the scintillating grooves and likely some politically-charged banter between songs as we hurtle towards another contentious presidential election. There’s no new album to promote, so fans can gear up for their favorite hits and, hopefully, some deep cuts for the diehards. Supporting acts for the U.S. leg haven’t yet been announced, but tickets are on sale now, so gear up now for revolution, girl-style, yeah!

American goth rock, doom, folk singer and songwriter, Chelsea Wolfe, is currently on tour in support of She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She (Loma Vista). The tour stopped by the Varsity Theater, in Minneapolis, on Wednesday, March 20th.

Melbourne’s Divide and Dissolve opened the show.

Divide and Dissolve (21 Feb 2018)

This is the third time we’ve seen the duo, and the first time we saw them in Feb 2018, we said that singer/guitarist Takiaya Reed “went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people, and reminding the mostly white audience, that this was not their land.”

The second time we saw them, in June 2022, Reed had similar statements, about “abusive police power, worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people. They reminded us that the land we are on belongs to the Dakota people and that we should give it back.”

So, it should be no surprise that about 18 minutes into their set, Reed took a little time to remind us that we are on indigenous land. She mentioned that she’s both black and Cherokee and that it’s very important to her. The speech was updated to include ending the Palestinian genocide (and just any genocides in general).

It appears that her original percussionist, Sylvie Nehill, has been replaced with another drummer. I am assuming the role is a temporarily one, as the new drummer is not officially announced anywhere.

Divide and Dissolve third album, and their latest, is called Systemic.

Fans lined up early under the glow of the beautiful Varsity Theater marquee, on a school night. The Varsity sits next to the University of Minnesota, so there’s always young college kids in the area.

It’s good to see such a healthy turnout to see Chelsea Wolfe, whose music bordering doom metal, folk, earth, and gothic rock, appeals to the large college fanbase that lives in the Dinkytown area.

This is the fifth time we’ve seen Wolfe: Cedar (22 Sep 2013), Roy Wilkins (06 May 2014), Fitzgerald Theater (25 May 2014), Triple Rock Social Club (31 Aug 2015), and Triple Rock Social Club (22 May 2016) … so we’re big fans.

Every time we see Wolfe, it’s been pretty memorable, with a few standing out: her appearance made national news at the Fitzgerald Theater because Eels debut the return of Journey’s vocalist Steve Perry, and I broke my camera’s lens, so I was forced to draw her: “Apparently, I've dropped my camera one too many times and the lens no longer extends or detracts.”

If you’ve never seen Chelsea Wolfe before, it’s a great, dark, foggy experience. She creates such a great atmosphere, and she sings mostly in the dark, so you can really hear her notes.

Recently, her music can be heard on the A24 film X (we wrote about X and A24 here). While that music was created with 70s score in mind, her new album She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She is a little more on electronica and trip hop, as well as the usual goth rock. This is possibly due to being produced by TV on the Radio guitarist Dave Sitek, whose music is more dance and commercial, in my opinion. It’s mostly received positive reviews from critics, who called the album ambitious and adventurous.

Last album? 1990. Last US Tour?- 2008.  

But The Sisters of Mercy returned to the live stage at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, MO, like they've never been away for anywhere near that long.  The goth rock pioneers are directly responsible for offshoot bands like The Mission (who themselves return finally to local stages this October) and Ghost Dance and have influenced countless others.  

The evening would begin with a well-received opening set from Toronto's A Primitive Evolution playing songs from their three studio albums (though sadly didn't include their recent cover of Motorhead's "Ace of Spades".)

Singer/guitarist Brett Carruthers mentioned his recent affection for all things Kansas City, as he and keyboardist Owen Mackinder also both happen to be in fellow T.O band The Birthday Massacre.  TBM themselves were recently in town, playing the adjoining venue next door in late April (WHM caught them last March in Minneapolis), so there was some added familiarity in returning back to the area again so soon.  

After the obligatory set change, TSOM entered the already dim-lit stage, full of rolling fog that resembled the recent Canadian wildfire hazy skies and took no musical prisoners.

The focused foursome (+ drum machine Doktor Avalanche, of course) went through a twenty-song curated set that was almost half culled from their three studio albums, and half were yet-to-be-released gems, to show the band hadn't been completely resting on any laurels. 

File this under Bands We Never Thought We'd See Live- the joy of watching singer Andrew Eldritch stalk the stage darting in and out of the darkness and mist, was a rare live moment; one we hope will return again, much sooner than later.

THE SISTERS OF MERCY have announced their first US tour in over 14 years: 19 dates, commencing on May 10, 2023.

For over four decades, The Sisters of Mercy (TSOM) have been an iconic force in underground music; defining, defying and denying numerous subgenres of rock and roll.

Their unique blend of punk-psychedelia, metal, dance beats and guttural growls have mesmerized the masses for several generations – and for many fans in the US, this will be their first ever opportunity to catch the band live.

In November 2022, TSOM announced their first live appearance on American soil since the second Bush administration.

Formed in Leeds, 1980, TSOM, while named after a Leonard Cohen song, took inspiration from such luminaries as Bowie, Slade and The Velvet Underground. But their closest sonic bedfellows are The Stooges, Motörhead and Suicide, the influence of which imbued the band with a distinct sound of their own when compared to others in the post-punk era.

1987’s Floodland was a massive breakthrough for the band, featuring epic tracks such as “Dominion,” “Lucretia My Reflection,” and, of course, 10+ minute opus “This Corrosion,” all three of which can still be heard on dance floors to date. 1990’s Vision Thing featured a harder, more metal-influenced sound, yet retained their trademark drum machine pummel and lyrical ambiguity.

The disingenuous nature of the music industry in the ‘90s left Andrew Eldritch with a distaste for the record business, shifting his focus to performing live in lieu of releasing recorded music. Yet, while TSOM have not released an LP since Vision Thing, their popularity and impact has only grown stronger over time, with their erudite rock and roll cacophony influencing countless bands over their tenure.

Recent live reviews have championed the show as the band’s strongest in years, with Eldritch supported by the stellar performances of Ben Christo, Dylan Smith, ‘Ravey’ Dave Creffield and, as ever, Doktor Avalanche. Add to this a cinematic light show and a set list of huge hits, deep cuts and acclaimed new tunes and you’ve got the recipe for a killer night.

“The Godfather of Goth” Peter Murphy sold out his Mill City Nights show in a rare Minneapolis appearance as part of his “Stripped” tour.

Murphy semi-regularly play in major cities, such as New York and Los Angeles (such as seeing him at Halloween Ball 2012 and Miracula Halloween), but the English singer rarely extend his shows to Minneapolis. In fact, his last MN show was eight years ago (16 June 2008), according to thefader.com with opener Ali Eskandarian (who was murdered in 2013). Prior to 2008, Murphy headlined First Avenue for his Dust tour in 2002.

Although no opening acts were listed at the venue’s website, we’ve seen enough shows to know that DJ Jake Rudh was handling the music video choices, mostly of the 80’s era (with one exception: David Bowie’s last video “Lazarus” before his death).

The audience who came to the special seated show at Mill City Nights were all longtime, dedicated fans. This is important to note, because this was one of the most behaved, most respective crowd we’ve seen in a long time. Fans were clinging on to every lyric sung and watching intently to Murphy’s dramatic hand gestures.... despite the dimly lit show.

Joining Peter Murphy on stage for the “Stripped Tour” were two friends (both New Yorkers): Emilio China (from Zef Noise) and John Andrews (from Loudboy). The two had the impossible task of reproducing music and effects that a normal full band made from Murphy’s entire discography.

They did a good job, with sometime Murphy joining them on acoustic (on “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything”) or melodica (on “Hollow Hills”)... but you can tell that Murphy doesn’t feel that comfortable playing live. Sometime it seemed like he’s noodling and trying to find the right note.

Setlist

As you can see from his setlist (which does not list encores), he had wedged in three Bauhaus songs in the middle of his set. Those songs were well-received... as for most of the well-known songs.

One of the interesting choice of songs was a cover of David Bowie’s “The Bewlay Brothers”, done early in the set. Right before the song played, Murphy introduced it as, “David Bowie died... but not really,” followed by a joking stab at Lady Gaga for her Bowie tribute. Murphy only wished Gaga would cover “a proper tune”. “The Bewlay Brothers” was the song that Murphy said he’s always wanted to play.

If you were wondering why Bowie meant so much to Murphy, you have to remember that the two were probably friends, at least like-minded colleagues, because the two appeared in The Hunger (the opening sequenced featured Bauhaus singing “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”). To tie it back to Gaga, she would later appear in American Horror Story, doing her version of The Hunger (but using as She Wants Revenge’s “Tear You Apart” as soundtrack).

Obviously his biggest hit song “Cuts You Up” was saved near the end of the encore. As soon as the violin notes were played, the entire audience basically went nuts. Murphy could have ended with that song and left everyone satiated, but the song was followed up with “Your Face”, a slower song to help bring the audience down.

The audience, still doing a standing ovation, would be rewarded with a second encore, this time for “I'll Fall With Your Knife”.

Teddy Thompson and Kelly Jones (a girl singer, not to be confused with Kelly Jones from Stereophonics or comic book artist Kelley Jones) recently released their duet collaboration album Little Windows on Cooking Vinyl. The pair will tour in support of the album, which The Associated Press called “Terrific” and Pop Matters said “Teddy Thompson is one of the best living hopes for contemporary music ... Thompson, Jones and their collaborators have given us a round of tunes that aren't already classics but are certainly destined to be.”

The two met a George Jones track at LA's Club Largo in 2011 and developed a bi-coastal musical relationship (she in Los Angeles, he in New York City) that helped spawn the album Little Windows.

Local singer/songwriter Sarah Morris (with band) to open.

For a long time, the Godfather of Goth, Peter Murphy (of Bauhaus fame) retired from playing live - so we were pretty excited to have caught him doing two rare performances in Los Angeles (Peter Murphy Halloween Ball 2012 and Miracula Halloween).... So, imagine our surprise when we found out that he is actually currently on a national tour - stopping by Minneapolis’ Mill City Nights this April 12th as part of a “stripped” tour.
