Bring on the ‘80s and ‘90s Brit-rock nostalgia: Longtime Scottish indie rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain are amping up the fuzzy guitar rock with the announcement of a co-headlining North American tour this fall with scratchy-voiced ‘80s new wave band Psychedelic Furs, also featuring special guest Frankie Rose of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls. The co-headlining tour will stop in at the Palace Theatre in St Paul, on October 17, 2024.

Jesus and Mary Chain at the Palace Theatre (09 May 2017)

The last time we saw Scotland’s The Jesus and Mary Chain (led by Jim Reid and his brother William), it was also at the Palace Theatre in May 2017, writing, “In typical JAMC fashion, the band played on a poorly lit stage, with a lot of backlighting (making for darkened silhouettes), and plenty of fog from a smoke machine. The smoke machine worked overtime, and during ‘Reverence’, causing the curtains to fall down and the fire alarm (complete with flashing lights) to go off and ending their set temporarily. After some confusion, the venue announced the band will be back. They did come back to finish the song midway, but they just couldn’t catch a break, as the curtains started to fall again!”

Having released their latest album, Glasgow Eyes, just this spring, the band have been on a touring frenzy this year, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Glasgow Eyes focused more on synth-heavy sounds than JAMC’s traditional dreamy guitar rock, but you can likely expect the band to play at least some of the hits that made them famous.

Psychedelic Furs at Palace Theatre (30 July 2022)

The last time we saw London’s The Psychedelic Furs (led by Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler), it was at the Palace Theatre in July 2022, writing, “This time around, they played their signature song, “Pretty in Pink” (everyone helped sing this song) in the middle of the set, and their second hit, “Love My Way” as the penultimate set closer. Since Minneapolis/St Paul never got a Made of Rain tour (the record came out in 2020), they group made up for lost time by including some new songs on their set, including “The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll” and “Wrong Train”.”

Frankie Rose to open. We last saw Frankie Rose in May 2023 and wrote, “Frankie Rose next took the stage with her band. We last saw her in 2013 opening up for Franz Ferdinand at the Skyway Theater, promoting her album Herein Wild. And it has been over six years since she last released an album. She actually completed one close to three years ago, but due to the pandemic and being a victim to vinyl production backlogs, she is finally on the road promoting Love as Projection, which The Big Takeover Magazine thought could be part of the Stranger Things soundtrack. It is a retro love letter to the type of electronic pop that would find a home in any John Hughes movie.”

We saw Hello Mary in July 2023 and wrote, “Hello Mary first took the stage in front of the sold out crowd. Based out of Brooklyn, they are comprised of Helena Straight on vocals and guitar, Mikaela Oppenheimer on bass and Stella Wave on drums and vocals. They are young, looking like they could still be in high school, which is not too far off course for Straight and Oppenheimer just graduated last year. Straight and Oppenheimer formed the band as freshmen, but didn’t start playing in front of crowds until the older Wave joined the group and started booking gigs to help her bandmates overcome the sheer terror of being in front of a crowd.”

Wednesday night was 80’s night at the Turf Club with the Pet Shop Boys playing through the speakers and Frankie Rose soon to take the stage.

Local musician Collin Gorman Weiland warmed up the crowd with a dirge of industrial dance music that ripped through the club. His latest album is Now & Thus Suite on the Moon Glyph label, a label in which he also works as a regular mastering engineer.

SRSQ aka Kennedy Ashlyn next took the stage to promote her new album Ever Crashing, a dream pop album involving 100 separate tracks all done by the Texas based musician.

Vice Magazine described SRSQ’s debut Unreality as “… floating and abstract.” Songs from her latest album create a lush musical landscape that allow Ashlyn to sing an almost defiant, wounded delivery of someone searching for meaning, yet using music to heal.

The pain is real for Ashlyn never set out to be a solo artist, but part of a duo with Cash Askew. But Askew died in a tragic warehouse/concert venue fire in Oakland, California. So, the theme through most of the evening was the temporal, fleeting nature of being alive. Like in “Saved for Summer” where Ashlyn sang:

Oh, wasted time, is it folly or despair?
Or somehow, in between?

A highlight was “Sixteen Ways”, a perfectly formed pop song to sing in the car. Another highlight was “Comeback”, a hypnotic dance groove.

A funny moment occurred when Rose moved into the prerequisite merch plug. Then she remembered: “We're out of our record. Just wanted to let you know.”

For the encore she asked the crowd if they had any requests. Someone joked and shouted: “Anything!” So she played “Anything” from her sold out album.

90s Japanese rock band Buffalo Daughter (suGar Yoshinaga on guitar, Yumiko Ohno on bass, and MoOog Yamamoto on turntables) is making a rare appearance at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on May 31st.

The group toured America with Luscious Jackson, because the American group met the band in Japan and loved them so much that they introduced them to Beastie Boys’ label Grand Royal Records. After signing with Grand Royal, Buffalo Daughter spent time in the USA touring with Butter 08 (Cibo Matto’s side project that we wrote about in June 2007) and, later with Luscious Jackson.

The band latest release We Are the Times came out in 2021, and they are celebrating reissues of their albums New Rock (1998) and I (2001) on double vinyl. I’m sure the band will bring them on tour, so be sure to grab the new reissues.

We last saw YYY in June 2013, which happened to be Karen O’s birthday and said, “YYY fans are a dedicated bunch who showed up two hours before the doors open. They would rush to the front and sing along to all their songs, including new songs (like "Under The Earth", "Slave", "Despair", and "Sacrilege") from Mosquito, which came out April 16th on Interscope Records. Encore was interesting, Har Mar Superstar came on stage to sing "Happy Birthday" to YYY's additional live guitarist David Pajo.”

The last time we saw Perfume Genius, it was in May 2017 and we said, “Perfume Genius is basically the stage name solo artist Mike Hadreas, began recording music under the moniker in 2008 when he moved back to Seattle. His songs often reflect his experience of being an openly gay man in a society that doesn’t always embrace what they don’t understand.”

Perfume Genius last album Ugly Season came out on Matador Records.

After playing in Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls, Rose struck out on her own in 2010 with the release of Frankie Rose and the Outs. She toured under that name (the Outs being her band), but by her sophomore album, Interstellar, she dropped the name the Outs, possibly due to changing band members, or most likely, to keep it simple.”

South Carolina based indie-rock band Whitehall released Swordfish Catcher (Common Ground Collective). The album features single “Two Eight Ten,” which singer Paddy McKiernan described, “‘Two Eight Ten’ started as a little melody I would sing in my head for about 3 months and then one afternoon it just wrote itself. All my dissatisfaction, tired-feelings, isolation, and a dash of anger turned into this cathartic album closer. We knew it’d be the last song on the record as soon as we finished- to us it’s always felt like the end of a long, stressful day.”

The band is co-headlining with Carver Commodore, at the Skyway Theatre, at Studio B, in Minneapolis on 11/10/21.

It’s been four years since we last saw Frankie Rose when the former Dum Dum Girls drummer went solo.

Rose is back now with her fourth studio album Cage Tropical (Slumberland Records and Grey Market) and she’ll be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul this October 6th.

Originally UK’s Splashh was supposed to open, but due to “immigration problems” set by Donald Trump’s administration (according to Splashh anyway), they had to cancel their U.S. tour.

Instead, Suburban Living and DJ Jake Rudh will happily take their place.

Even after four years away, Glasgow four-piece Franz Ferdinand still has a fire that’s out of control. In their time away, the band seemed to re-discover the vitality and freshness that brought their debut album, now almost ten years past, to great international acclaim. Touring in support of their just-released Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (Domino Records), their 80 min. performance in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Skyway Theatre proved that their distinctive and sharp dance-rock riffs are still a viable part of today’s musical ether.

The Skyway Theatre

The Skyway Theatre itself is a third-floor old six-screen cineplex, with seats removed on the sloped floor and stepped balcony, and a wide stage placed in front of the screen area. Mostly known for hosting EDM acts, the 1,956 capacity room actually holds more than neighboring First Avenue, though promoter Live Nation prefers to keep attendance at a more comfortable 1,800 or less. Concession stands have been converted to full bars and escalators that didn’t work in the 90’s, still don’t work. The garish carpet and theater smell of yesteryear all still linger, though there is a certain charm/kitsch about it, as well as somewhat boomy but otherwise decent acoustics in the venue.

FRANKIE ROSE

Brooklyn-based Frankie Rose opened the evening with a brief but solid 30 min. set. After playing in Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls, Rose struck out on her own in 2010 with the release of Frankie Rose and the Outs. She toured under that name (the Outs being her band), but by her sophomore album, Interstellar, she dropped the name the Outs, possibly due to changing band members, or most likely, to keep it simple.

Rose started her set with "The Depths", from her latest album Herein Wild, and then after the song was over, she commented that it was about a lake. After a pause, she added, "Lake Minnetonka" (jokingly). The Minnesota-love theme would soon follow with her commenting on how she loved it here and wants to move here. No one believed her, but it does goes to show that she probably spent some time here and knows the area well enough to talk about it.

I also wanted to note that how she handled some heckler, with a response of, "Say it to my face!" This tells me that Rose can handle herself and has probably encountered other very rude people throughout her career. Despite the anonymous idiot in the crowd, she still insisted that everyone in the audience were more than welcome to join her van. "It'll be just like the Polyphonic-Spree, only bigger."

Anyway, Rose previewed three songs ("The Depths", "Into Blue", and "Question/Reason") from Herein Wild, her first release from Fat Possum Records. The rest of her set was made up of songs from Interstellar, and ended with a cover of The Damned "Street of Dreams" and one of her first written solo songs, "Save Me".

Alex Kapranos

Headliner Franz Ferdinand couldn’t have planned their opener any better. As lights dimmed and the intro music was cued, the Scottish quartet took to the stage to great applause and went into the more-than appropriate ‘The Dark of the Matinée’. “You sound pretty good tonight!”, singer Alex Kapranos addressed the crowd, co-guitarist/keyboardist Nick McCarthy buoying left and right in place while the rhythm section of bassist Bob Hardy and drummer Paul Thomson stayed mostly in the shadows but kept momentum going with angular bass lines and high-hat percussion.

‘Do You Want To’ rose the crowd early on, the lead single from the band’s second album inspiring dancing and cheering from the mostly younger audience. ‘Walk Away’, the “only song we’ve ever written in a dressing room” was well received as was ‘Stand on the Horizon’, which the band transitioned effortlessly into next.

The setlist was a well-planned seamless mix of newer songs and older classics from their three previous albums, and included a number of alt-radio staples you may have forgotten until you hear them played again. “It feels pretty good!”, Kapranos emoted before the band stretched into a set highlight of the throbbing ‘Can’t Stop Feeling’, which morphed into Donna Summer’s disco-classic ‘I Feel Love’- an homage to the driving beat that anchors both songs and made the crowd wish for a giant disco ball overhead. “You’ve got me all excited up here--I’ve got to take my inhaler”, Kapranos explained after the song performance, “that’s the sign of a good night” he gleaned, keeping his asthma in check.

Red lights appropriately bathed the stage for a passionate ‘This Fire’, with Kapranos feeling some gospel soul and becoming preacher-like as he incited the crowd to chant the chorus in unison. The requested ‘Treason! Animals’ followed, bassist Hardy anchoring the song with a fierce bottom rhythm, then the band segued into the massive ‘Take Me Out’, which prompted pogoing and beer swilling from both sides of the sloped floor. The upbeat ‘Ulysses’ from the band’s previous album, closed the main set, audience members hands all waving left to right and ending with thunderous applause.

The encore began with the first single from their newest album, “Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action…Right Now!” - Kapranos introduced the bouncy song that fits perfectly in the oeuvre of their other radio hits. Guitarist McCarthy began the pulsing ‘Michael’ with a machine-gun riff and the show ended with an apropos ‘Goodbye Lovers and Friends’, a classy farewell song to wish us all well after their long absence from local stages.

We caught up with Kapranos post-show and asked whether he would return to producing other acts after the current tour, as he has done previous. Franz Ferdinand fans will be pleased to hear he feels the band is sounding better than ever and will likely instead re-enter the studio to begin plotting the next Franz Ferdinand release - hopefully making it a less-than-four-year-wait until we see them again next.

Thursday, Phantogram will be in Minneapolis at First Avenue. Phantogram has been very busy since their set at 2012 Bonnaroo Festival, writing and recording new music.

Perhaps the New York duo (Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter) will showcase some new songs on this upcoming tour. In the meantime, they've just released a self-titled digital EP via Stereogum (streaming right now at stereogum.com).

The soul songstress will be almost wrapping up her "Down and Dirty Shine Tour" with Saturday's show, ending in Chicago.

You remember Frankie Rose, right? We like her. After paying her dues in all these bands we like: Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls, Rose finally decided to go solo (or at least under the "Frankie Rose and the Outs" moniker, before opting to just simply go under her regular name.)

Anyway, following Frankie Rose's performance at Pitchfork, she announced that she recently signed to Fat Possum Records with a brand new record called Herein Wild "in the works". The pending release date is September 24th.

Can't wait that long to hear the new album? Good news, Rose recently shared "Sorrow", the first track from the forthcoming album on Souncloud.



Her next live date will be with Tamaryn at the Bowery Ballroom in New York on 09/23/13.

Frankie Rose, the drummer from Crystal Stilts and Vivian Girls, is a prime example of this with her debut 7” Thee Only One.

Frankie Rose rolled into Minneapolis Sunday night with openers DIIV and the Olsen Twinns.

The Olsen Twinns

The Olsen Twinns, comprised solely of Iowan Mickey Davis -- not Mary-Kate and Ashley, kicked things off with a set of mostly instrumental electronic music. The beats were dancey and the stage banter kept to a minimum -- mostly mumbling about being nervous and being from Des Moines and also being a member of the notorious “sandwich eatin’ crew.” The highlight of the set was a song called “Photobooths.” If you’re into electronic music, definitely check his stuff out.

DIIV

Next up were Brooklyn-based indie charmers, DIIV (pronounced “dive”). The name might not ring a bell as they’ve just recently changed it (like, today) from DIVE in order to not be confused with the Belgian industrial band with the same name. Zachary Cole Smith and co. arrived on stage sporting the latest in street urchin fashion. Despite the questionable attire, they proved almost immediately why they’ve been receiving quite a bit of media buzz despite only having released a pair of 7” singles. They played a tight, energetic set made up of songs from their single releases and a few unreleased tracks from their upcoming debut album, Oshin, to be released on Captured Tracks on June 26th. They also threw in a cover of a Kurt Cobain demo “Bambi Slaughter” for good measure. DIIV are a shoegazey, dream-pop outfit that deliver live, as well as, on record -- I definitely recommend checking out their upcoming debut or getting in on one their live shows!

Last up was Frankie Rose. The start of her set was delayed slightly by some technical difficulties, which Frankie filled with some talk of trying to find a place for dinner before the show (she recommended Taste of Thailand), threats of trips to the bathroom (but not onstage - “this isn’t a GG Allin show” she joked) and her brother stripping for us (he plays guitar in her touring band). Once things got underway, the too short set -- it was 35 minutes maybe --  was filled with nearly every song off her latest release, the retro 80s synth-soaked, Interstellar. She threw in a couple songs off her 2010 release, Frankie Rose and the Outs, and before the audience knew it, the show was over. Even though the set was short and the lack of encore was disappointing, the songs were polished, poppy and crowd-pleasing -- check her out when she hits your town.
