We saw Giovannie and the Hired Guns in Feb 2023 and wrote, “Any band that begins their ninety-minute set with the riffs from Pantera’s “Cowboys from Hell” immediately has our attention, and Giovannie and the Hired Guns instantly had the crowd in their hands for the rest of the night. The buzzing rock band melds metal, country. and Tejano music with some punk and power pop and is out supporting third full-length (and first for Warner Music), Tejano Punk Boyz after several previous indie releases. The band initially formed when front man Giovannie Yanez was working at a pawnshop in the small town of Stephenville, TX and has toured with Classless Act last year, also making a memorable Kansas City appearance at last summer’s Boulevardia Festival that still had people talking.”

We saw Lunar Vacation in Mar 2022 and wrote, “Opening the show was Atlanta’s Lunar Vacation… which surprisingly was very good. We didn’t know what to expect from them, only having heard their cover of Wham’s “Last Christmas” (which we wrote about…, er, last Christmas)…. During their set, they mentioned this was their last stop of the tour… and, in fact, they “lost a band member”. They quickly recruited Minneapolis’ progressive metal band Why Not member Isaac… who spent the day learning their songs.”

Local group Flamin' Oh's is headlining the Turf Club, in St Paul, on March 27, 2025. This may be the band’s first appearance in 2025… their last gig, at North by North Loop Music Fest, was cancelled due to trademark infringement claims by SXSW and poor ticket sales. I guess SXSW owns a stake in NXNE (North by North East), and that could be confusing to the North by North Loop name.

We saw Flamin’ Oh’s in June 2018 and wrote, “Next up were Flamin’ Oh’s ... also from Minneapolis. The group were originally called Flamingo, but were forced to change their name to the Flamin’ Oh’s due to another group with the same/similar name. They actually broke up in 1987, but eventually reunited a decade later just in time for the Mill City Music Festival in 1997. Even with rotating band members, but having been around for so long, the group were completely comfortable playing the main stage. Seeing them make goofy faces and doing standard rock poses, they look like they were having a lot of fun.”

After a multi-year hiatus, long-running Portland’s experimental punk band The Taxpayers are back with Circle Breaker, out on March 21 on Ernest Jenning Record Co.

Rob Taxpayer comments on the album, “Just as we began working on this album, our guitar player Andrew had a family member gunned down and murdered at a park near his home. The next day, the city came and cut down the cherry tree in front of his house. A week or two later, Andrew texted me a picture: the gnarled stump of the cherry tree had sprouted new growth. A new tree being born from the old. Death, Taxes... and Life.”

The Taxpayers have announced a series of midwest shows in support of Circle Breaker this spring in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit, along with summer shows on the east and west coast.

The special Electric Fetus 50th Anniversary Party took place at First Avenue in Minneapolis on Saturday, June 9th. If you’re not from the area, the The Electric Fetus is a record store in Minneapolis (with a second Duluth location) that began operations since June 1968. Over the 50 years, only Keith Covart remained as the owner. Currently Covart’s daughter Stephanie and husband Aaron are the owners.

There were three short films prepared for us, playing before each band (with the exception of the Last Import). They were videos of various bands wish a happy 50th Anniversary to the Electric Fetus. They were mostly local favorites, but few national bands like The Wombats, Sting (with Shaggy), and Ringo Starr made it in the films. Although the films weren’t very long (average less than five minutes each), they did push all the bands a little later than scheduled. As you know, in these multi-band lineup festival-type shows, a few minutes here and there will result in going over time. Ultimately, the final band, Real Estate, had to drop their song “The Bend” (which you can clearly read on their setlist) as a result of starting a little late.

Anyway, the celebration began with DJ Roy Freedom spinning music before and between sets. The first band to arrive on stage were Last Import, an all-grrrl trio featuring Emily Bjorke on vocals and guitars, Grace Baldwin on bass, and Jane Halldorson on drums.

The new-ish band, with their garage-y sound will fit well with other Minneapolis girl bands like Kitten Forever. Near the end of their brief 30-min set, the group mentioned that they are playing the Battle of the Bands free show at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall on June 13th.

Next up were Flamin’ Oh’s (currently: Robert Wilkinson - guitar and vocals, Bob Burns - keyboards and vocals, Terry Isachsen - guitar, Sean Sauder - drums, and Jenny Case - bass guitar and vocals), also from Minneapolis. The group were originally called Flamingo, but were forced to change their name to the Flamin’ Oh’s due to another group with the same/similar name. They actually broke up in 1987, but eventually reunited a decade later just in time for the Mill City Music Festival in 1997.

Even with rotating band members, but having been around for so long, the group were completely comfortable playing the main stage. Seeing them make goofy faces and doing standard rock poses, they look like they were having a lot of fun.

Host David Campbell did a good job introducing each band, but sometime he had to deal with a dead mic or had to speak without a spotlight, so it felt like not everyone was on the same page.

Brooklyn’s Habibi came on next. The pysch girl group (Rahill Jamalifard, Lenaya Lynch, Erin Campbell, Karen Isabel, and Leah Beth Fishman) were probably my favorite of the lineup. What made this group unique is that they mix traditional psych rock with girl harmonies, and sometime would sing in Farsi. It works, at least for me.

The group played a new song for us called “Born Too Late”, which they said was written on this current tour. In fact, the song debut only a few days ago, and it sounded like it’s a hit for the girls.

New Jersey’s Real Estate (singer/guitarist Martin Courtney IV, bassist Alex Bleeker, drummer Jackson Pollis, keyboard Matt Kallman, and guitarist Julian Lynch) closed out the show.

Bassist Alex Bleeker mentioned on stage that this was the band’s first time playing the First Avenue mainroom. This is, in fact, true, since they were originally scheduled for First Avenue in November 2017 (with Lucy Dacus), but unfortunately had to postponed it until this year.

Since the band started later than scheduled (due to compounding video time and Electric Fetus’ staff introduction and thank you’s), Real Estate did have to drop their final intended song “The Bend” from the set. With this jam-packed show, if they drop a song, I don’t think anyone minded ... they got their money’s worth.

It was a great 50th Anniversary Party for the Electric Fetus... here’s hoping for another 50.

With I’ve Seen Everything turning 25 years old, Scotland’s Trashcan Sinatras (aka Trash Can Sinatras) decided it’s time they bring their “One Night, Two Albums” live tour. The show will be a double set (meaning probably no opening band), which will see the cult-favorite band play two albums, I’ve Seen Everything and Cake, back to back.

These two albums are probably the band’s best-known record (I’ve Seen Everything included Beavis & Butt-Head’s favorite “Hayfever” song), so if there’s one Trashcan Sinatra show you need to see, it’s this one.

A Great Big World is currently in the middle of their international tour, appropriately titled "A Great Big World Tour". The tour is to coincide with the launch of the group's latest single "Already Home," taken from their new album Is There Anybody Out There? (Black Magnetic/Epic Records).

With the new single, the band mentioned that after countless tour dates that, "'Home' doesn't need to be a tangible and physical thing.... It can be that quiet place that is always there inside of you, or the love that exists between two people, no matter how far apart. So in that sense, we are always 'home'."

Scottish folk singer-songwriter Greg Holden (currently based in New York) to open the show with an acoustic set.

Lauryn Hill, or rather Ms. Lauryn Hill, blew up with her debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. She's currently doing a "Homecoming Concert Series", which I suspect was designed for her biggest fan to see her at a small, intimate setting... but at a higher-than-usual ticket price (the Minneapolis show lists $65, excluding extra ticketing fees.)

The Antlers w/ Yellow Ostrich

Wow, I haven't seen The Antlers since 2010... a lot has changed since then. The Antlers are back with their fifth album, Familiars (Anti- Records), which NPR is saying is full of "rich sound, its mix of subtlety and grandiosity, its funereal beauty."

Opening up for them will be Yellow Ostrich, who was last in Minnesota last March. I didn't cover their MN appearance due to my winter hibernation, but we did manage to cover them when they were in New York at a press-only event.
