New York’s Better Lovers are the hottest hardcore band in America right now. That’s because the supergroup features Greg Puciato from Dillinger Escape Plan, Will Putney from Fit for An Autopsy and three former members (Jordan Buckley, Stephen Micciche, Clayton Holyoak) of Every Time I Die. The group is signed to SharpTone Records, and with only one EP God Made Me an Animal, they are selling out their tour, based on the strength of their live reputation.
The band headlined the Fine Line, in Minneapolis, on a hot Saturday night, featuring three bands, picked by Better Lovers, for support. Starting with Greyhaven, a four-piece progressive post-hardcore group from Kentucky, touring in support of their new record This Bright and Beautiful World.
Next was Foreign Hands, who is releasing their debut album What’s Left Unsaid on June 21st on SharpTone Records. They were late to start their set, due to problems with the sound monitor and lack of soundchecks. Eventually, the sound guy said, “Hurry the f-up!” and forced the band to start.
Highlight of Foreign Hands’ set was their finale song, which saw the singer Tyler Norris sharing the stage with guest vocalist Connie Sgarbossa, from SeeYouSpaceCowboy. The way SeeYouSpaceCowboy carried on, often encouraging the mosh-pit to go stronger and harder, you can tell they are used to headlining their own shows (they previously headlined the 7th Street Entry in 2021).
And what do you know? They’re going to be back, headlining the Fine Line, on August 11, 2024. Based on the strong audience feedback, many, if not all, of these fans will be back for more.
Finally, Better Lovers, closed out the show. The band walked on stage to a medley of love songs, such as “Easy Lover”, “All You Need is Love”, “What About Love”, “Love Train”, “Power of Love”, “Love is a Battlefield”, “Just an Old Fashion Love Song”, etc. They had a sense of humor… because all those love/pop songs sounded nothing like what Better Lovers can offer.
The band basically played their entire debut EP, but also brand new songs, not yet released. They had a lot of energy, and the audience helps feed them the energy with plenty of crowd surfing, moshing/slam dancing. It was so intense, it would often spill over, and you can feel the moshing through the rumbling on the dancefloor.
Highlight of the show was when singer Greg Puciato went up the Fine Line’s balcony, and then jump into the audience (which you can watch on Twitter).
If you’re into hardcore bands, you definitely need to check out Better Lovers. Hopefully, the band will be back in town soon.
