We look to Moz Angeles, for the language we use. London is dead, London is dead!

The Pope of Mope, Morrissey, announced three dates in Los Angeles, to close out a successful 2024 year. December 28-29 at the United Theater on Broadway, and a New Year Eve show at the Hollywood Palladium (or as my friends like to call it, the “Get-laid-ium”).

Although Mozzer cancelled the first two months of 2024 due to “physical exhaustion”, it looks like he’s been cured since his entire US November tour dates were all fulfilled with no cancellations.

It looks very positive; I do not think these three Los Angeles dates will be cancelled.

Also, in recent news, Morrissey gave a rare interview to Billboard, talking about the failed The Smiths reunion. I’ve been following Morrissey for over thirty years and every interview I’ve ever read, it is Morrissey that was anti-reforming the Smiths… and here he is, wanting to re-unite with Johnny Marr.

I suppose it makes sense, given that Morrissey is getting old, and it could be a final goodbye and thank you to all the Smiths fans. It would be nice, plus the money would be a bonus.

Mozfest

It’s safe to assume most people uses either Chrome or Window’s Internet Explorer (or the new Edge) or Safari (on Apple computers)… but I’m a Firefox user. I am a fan, going back to Netscape. If you didn’t know, the maker of Firefox is Mozilla, and every year, for the past 15 years, they hold an annual Mozilla Festival, or Mozfest for short.

This year’s Mozfest just wrapped up in late November, and if you’re interested, you can go to their website mozillafestival.org and read or watch some keynotes.

This year’s theme and focus seems to be on Artificial Intelligence, or A.I., and took place on MozFest House Zambia. Tickets were free, but unfortunately, flying to Zambia might be a little costly… but if you live in the area, you should go.

In recent Firefox news, Firefox turned 20 years old in November, and they recently removed the “Do Not Track” feature.

Trivia: Singer/songwriter Firefox was forced to change her stagename to Firefox AK to avoid confusion with the web browser.

Mozzy + Kalan.FrFr

Sacramento’s Mozzy and Los Angeles’ Kalan.FrFr have teamed up to release Lucky Her… arriving on December 20, 2024, via Empire.

Mozzy has built a reputation as one of the best street storytellers and earned two Gold certifications from the RIAA for “Excuse Me” and “Sleep Walkin.” The later was featured in a pivotal scene in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. Rolling Stone lists Mozzy as one of the 100 Best West Coast Rap Songs of All Time.

Kalan.FrFr’s hit single “Scoring,” was featured on many NBA broadcasts, and this year joined on the Make the West Great Again project with his friends and fellow Angelenos YG and Ty Dolla $ign, plus G Herbo and Spooky Jay. This Summer he was part of DJ Hed’s set in Kendrick Lamar’s notorious L.A. rap celebration, “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends,” broadcast live on Amazon Prime, performing his local hit “Right Wit It” with G Perico.

Now the two collaborated with this Lucky Her release to close out a great year for both Cali rappers.

It’s been five years since Firefox AK (aka Andrea Kellerman) released Color the Trees, so we’re excited to hear that she is back with a new forthcoming album in early 2017. She teased us that she will once again be collaborating on a song with her friend Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide) on the new record (the two of them previously worked together on Hello Saferide’s ‘Long Lost Penpal’).

Why the long break? According to Kellerman, it was mostly due to the stress of trying to be successful at her record label: “I was probably naïve, but for me, who was used to the personal and loyal people at Razzia Records, it was almost shocking to all of a sudden work with people who were more concerned with sales figures than I was ever used to. In the end it took away the joy of making music.”

She took a break from music to raise her family (apparently in Los Angeles!) and worked as a graphic designer after all the tour promotion for Color the Trees.

Anyway, Firefox AK’s latest single and music video Heart of Mine is out now on Razzia, so she has not left the record label. The new single was produced by Claes Björklund, known for being in the duo Iamamiwhoami (with singer Jonna Lee), and the music video was directed by Mats Udd. The video has a creepy, demonic possession, vibe to it.

Sample lyrics from “Heart of Mine”:

This is where I wanna be

calling out the crazy before your eyes”

I have to explain and apologize for some things: First of all, the phone Andrea was using came through really low and so the sound quality is not so hot. It also had a short delay (combined with low output) causing us to ask "what?" and pause a lot. Boo to the technical problems :(

The Midway State's interview was delayed by 30 minutes, plus the time zone thing kicked my ass! The problem with the delay was that I was on a tight schedule and could only record for fifteen minutes before having to export my audio and have the computer ready for another recording session in 10 minutes.

ALSO: talking to Kate and Lara ran nearly an hour, even after I threw away such spectacular questions such as "What's in your pocket?" and "I hear you collect comic books"; it still ran nearly 40 minutes. So I decided to make it into its own episode - consider this a bonus episode this week!

The original Firefox is back with a new album, If I Were A Melody, to be released this month. I call her the original, because Andrea Kellerman was using that as her stage name before she was forced to add her initials to distinguish herself from the browser.

Firefox AK is from Stockholm, Sweden, and is signed to Razzia Records, the same company responsible for Hello Saferide^[W♥M] (you may have remembered seeing Kellerman singing with Annika Norlin^[W♥M] in the video for Long Lost Pen Pal.)

So, there's a few interesting thing about the lead single, "Winter Rose" from If I Were A Melody that I think you should know. It seems that Tgr Lou (or otherwise known as Tiger Lou) is actually Rasmus Kellerman, her husband. And if you like this Eurodisco-inspired song, you can download it for free on Razzia's website.

Anyway, I thought we should take a look at her debut album, Madame, Madame!. The first time I listened to this album, I didn't expect it to be so electropop. This is not a bad thing, I only mentioned this because I went in thinking this was going to be folky-acoustic type.

Although I can't speak for Kellerman, she leaves all interpretations of her lyrics up to the listener. I would like to suggest that these songs are really about AK's real-life experiences. For instance, the intro song is "City to City" which, seems to me, about travelling and meeting new people (possibly in a touring setting).

"Habibi" is like a pen pal letter, begging her (Habibi) to let her heart guides her, while "All Those People" is kind of commentary on "reality" television. Two points to AK for mentioning "Beauty and the Geek" in that song.

 

 

Firefox AK-Zodiac

Curiously, the song "Zodiac" is not listed on her discography page. I'm sure this is just a mistake, but I took it as a sign to spotlight the song.

The song has a constant beat, which represent AK's styling of music. The best part is the way she sings "shut up" repeated over and over.

If you pick up Madame, Madame!, it also comes with two music videos (320x240 pixels). Both videos features crude animation (apologies to the artists and directors, it is the only word I can really describe it) and is a nice bonus to the 10 audio tracks.

Look for If I Were A Melody on February 27th. Check out her back catalogs on Razzia.
