We caught Fletcher in April 2022 and wrote, “As for Fletcher (Cari Fletcher), she started releasing her music in 2016 (with Finding Fletcher), but her first major hit was a song called “Undrunk” in 2019. The single hit the Billboard Hot 100 and Spotify’s #1 Viral Chart. Naturally radio stations started to pick up on the song, and overnight the song was the fastest-rising song at pop radio. She started her set with “girls girls girls”, a song that reused a line from Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”. It sets the tone that she’s a member of the LGBTQ+ community. If you weren’t sure, her latest EP The S(ex) Tapes is really about her relationship with famous YouTuber Shannon Beveridge.”

We saw Avril Lavigne in July 2022 and wrote, “Avril Lavigne was up next, promoting her latest album, Love Sux. Twenty years has passed since she released her debut album Let Go, letting punk scene know there was now a queen. Twenty years may have gone by, but the spirit of that seventeen year-old is still there. Lavigne started the set with “Girlfriend” as black and white confetti shot into the crowd. She had an enthusiastic base in attendance, many who took the opportunity to be her backup singers on songs like “Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated.””

We saw Mat Kearney in Oct 2016 and wrote, “Another familiar face to the area is Oregon native and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Mat Kearney, who took a break from creation of the follow up to last year’s Just Kids (Republic Records), to join the Tour de Compadres. Kearney’s generous fifty-minute set was testament to his own headlining potential in a venue this size and he made the most of his time. With a band that included Minneapolis resident Tyler Burkum on guitar (ex-Audio Adrenaline, Leagues) , Kearney’s set sounded robust and much more electronic and full sounding, than his initial folk singer-songwriter vibe. Before ‘Nothing Left to Lose’, Kearney feigned a quick verse of ‘Purple Rain’ before quickly discarding it, admitting he’s never played the song before, then redeemed himself by declaring us the “coolest cold city” in America.”

Findland’s Jenni Venäläinen (billed as Jenni Venäläinen & Melkutus Party) is a versatile kantele player and singer, specializing in Carelian kantele tradition and improvisation. In her project and album Melkutus Party, she takes traditional Karelian kantele songs and turning it into a modern dancing party songs via kantele. This show is part of the Cedar’s Nordic Roots Series.

The band is: Jenni Venäläinen (kantele, vocals), Janne Storm (live electronics, synth, cetara) and Tatu Viitala (electronic percussion).

French/Finnish indie pop band The Dø stopped by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night, touring in support of their latest album Shake Shook Shaken.

Cool Pollution

Opening up the show, playing in near darkness was local Ilya Garelik, under the stagename Cool Pollution. Songs on his set included some tracks from his free EP Landlocked with Lakes, including "Where's My Phone?" He offered the EP to the audience... if you weren't there, no problem, you can also download it for free via bandcamp.com.

Normally a duo of Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy, for this tour, The Dø is joined by extra drummer Pierre Belleville. This was the second time the band played the 7th Street Entry (they previously came here in September 2010 with Zoo Animal as opener), and judging from singer Merilahti's statement, "Thank you for coming back with your friends"... the attendance last night was way up from 2010 (the turnout was pretty terrific for a Monday show).

Setlist

Merilahti came on stage with what looked like a reflective space thermal shawl. Normally with these warm clothing, they're often discarded by the third song... but Merilahti kept it on throughout the set - until returning for the encore. While the two drummers/keys remained in the background, Merilahti seemed to have put together her own dance choreography. Her routine is obstructed because Levy would change the set list every night.

There were a few dedicated fans on the dancefloor, often helping sing back to some of their catchy singles, including "Anita No!" They seemed to know The Dø's songs very well.

I think my favorite song on their set was the closer "Despair, Hangover & Ecstasy", which Merilahti pretended to be the captain of the ship, "This is your Captain speaking. Prepare for take off..."

Kaivama and the Polka Chicks did a sort of tagteam concert last night at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis.

Their show can be broken down by this: The Polka Chicks did their set, with the last three songs invaded by Kaivama, then a brief intermission, followed by Kaivama's set, with the Polka Chicks coming back on to close out the last three songs, and, of course, the eventual encore song.

That actually sounds complicated, but it's really not. There's something nice about the circular feel to their plan, ending with everyone involved on stage.

Starting the show was The Polka Chicks. They play some traditional polka (some from Finland, some from "sad" Sweden, etc), and some original material. The highlight of their set was either "Ajatuksia" (Thoughts), a waltz, or "Linnanneito" (the Lady in the Castle), which is about a girl in jail and her intent on keeping her man faithful.

Kaivama seemed really pleased at the large turnout, with violinist Sara Pajunen keep asking "who are you?" addressing everyone. The duo formed only three-ish years ago, originally playing only instrumental folk. It would seem Kaivama is experimenting with more instruments (mandolin, banjo) and original lyrics in their songs.

Highlight of their set was a story about the near-non-existent city of "Toivoa", which in Finnish means hope.

The Polka Chicks came on stage to help Kaivama finish (or would that be funnier if I said Finnish?) the set. Oddly a Swedish title was in the mix: "I Denna Ljuva", Kaivama's latest single.

The Polka Chicks and Kaivama are currently playing some Midwest shows. Come check them out if you're into Scandinavian folk music.

Lab - Killing Me Lab - Beat The Boys

See as we don't have any bands from Finland, I've decided to pick a Finnish band called LAB today. They are a "gothic rock" band on Sony/BMG, but I think they're more Alternative Rock from the 1999 to 2005 era. They sound similar to Daisy Chainsaw^[W♥M], so if you like them, you'll love LAB.

Looking at their album covers, you can start to see a trend: the direction of the band seems to be in Christianity imagery of Angels and Devils. Their third album featured a topless Ana in a Christ like on-the-cross position, an imagery that would never be accepted in America (good thing none of their albums was ever released here).

Of course, none of their songs actually deals with religion.

Sadly, the only international fame they've received is being on the soundtrack to Vivendi Universal's FlatOut Video Game. The song is "Beat the Boys", which I've included here for you to listen to.

The other song I've picked out is "Killing Me", which is from their debut album, Porn Beautiful.

As far as I know, the band is no longer around. According to their last post entry (sometime in 2005), the band was dropped by BMG/Sony^[1].
