Celebrating its 60th Anniversary, Capitol Records and Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) with Peggy Lee Associates re-released Peggy Lee’s I’m A Woman as a special expanded edition. The album came out yesterday, March 31st, and I got a chance to listen to it.
The original record came out in 1963, thanks to the hit song “I’m A Woman”, and clocked in at just under 30 minutes.
The album contains a lot of blues & jazz covers, including Fats Domino’s “I’m Walkin’”, Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”, and “Mack the Knife”. The latter song is originally from the music play The Threepenny Opera. The song was covered by many famous artists, as Jimmy Watson from the Record Mirror wrote: “I thought that after Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, and Ella Fitzgerald had finished with “Mack the Knife”, there just wasn’t anything fresh to be done with this great number. But the fair Miss Peggy Lee, talented trouper that she is, has been and gone and done it. Her version is slick, decidedly humourous and could well be a single success for her if released on 45rpm.”
Listening to the album, I love these songs were recorded live. Sometime you can hear background comments from the conductor saying “take eleven”, meaning that they either messed up the first ten takes or they simply wanted to change the pacing or play it a different way. The songs on the album was best version of the recording… but thanks to this expanded edition, you get to hear some alternate takes, giving these songs a fresh new life.
My personal favorite was “Jealous”, a collaboration with Bobby Darin. You can hear playful outtakes of Lee saying, “You’re ruining my career.” with Darin responding, “Yeah, but you’re helping mine.” Keep in mind that Darin already had the #1 hit “Mack the Knife” on the US and UK charts with two Grammys.
Five of the eight bonus tracks were previously unreleased, so this is a must-buy for any Peggy Lee fans.
