Los Angeles' Dum Dum Girls are back in Minneapolis as part of their "Cult of Love" tour, in support of their third studio album Too True (Sub Pop).
The main difference on this latest tour is that Dum Dum Girls are playing the entire Too True, from start to finish... but we'll get to that in a minute.
Opener Ex Cops started the early show, playing a brief 35-minute set. When they first came on the stage, I turned to a friend of mine at the show and said, singer Amalie Bruun looks more like an "ex-model than an ex-cop"... and apparently I was right: the Danish singer previously worked as an actress and model for Chanel.
All the songs on their set were previews from their forthcoming album Daggers (Downtown Records), with the only exception of "Separator" from
their 2012 album True Hallucinations.
Things got off to a rock start on their first song, "Black Soap", as a sound feedback was introduced in the middle of the song. The rest of the set was smooth sailing. Highlight of their set was "Tragically Alright", a song that they co-wrote with Ariel Pink.
When the Dum Dum Girls were in Minneapolis at the Triple Rock Social Club earlier this year on April 1st, they only did about half of Too True. Since it's only been six months, they decided to play the entire album live.... plus throwing in a b-side "Girls Intuition" (which incidentally appeared on the Japanese release).
With the entire album live and with new visuals via a movie projection with a custom 'DUM' film, the show felt more like an exclusive listening party. If you liked what you heard, then you can re-live that experience with their Sub Pop album.
The whole Too True set was only about 40 minutes, so there was a very brief intermission, as they geared up for the second half of their show - playing some classic songs, plus a cover of Strawberry Switchblade's "Trees and Flowers." The cover was so soothing and gentle that singer Dee Dee Penny had to comment that the audience was "hopefully not asleep."
