Minneapolis’ Hippo Campus has announced a series of special intimate shows, with one of them at First Avenue’s mainroom on September 19, 2024.

We’ve seen the band several times, but their last appearance at the Yacht Club, in July 2024, was one of their biggest stage yet: “Local group Hippo Campus drew in a large crowd, despite what setlist.fm say. We shouldn’t be surprised about their big fan base, as they’ve sold out their appearance at the Armory in April 2022: “Quite a spot to land, The Armory, a venue that can hold close to 8,000. A pretty big jump from the concert We Heart Music covered at First Ave in 2017. But this band of schoolmates (Jake Luppen (lead vocals/guitar), Nathan Stocker (lead guitar/vocals), Zach Sutton (bass/keyboard), and Whistler Isaiah Allen (drums/vocals) has been on a steady ascent since graduating from the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts and releasing a self-assured single/music video Little Grace in 2014.” I can hear an older woman, puzzled at the big turnout, asks her friend, “What’s the big deal with these guys? They look like they’re in high school.” I had to laugh a little.”

Lutalo to open. We saw the Vermont-based singer/producer in Oct 2023 and said, “Opening the show was Vermont-based singer/producer Lutalo (not to be confused with Ugandan musician David Lutalo). He was last seen opening for Claud in September 2023 and seemed to be a fairly active singer. You find out that he was born and raised in Minnesota, so being back in St Paul, felt like being home. He played “PLPH” early on… which stands for Pretty Little Painted House … what is the painted house? It’s in reference to the White House. He ended his set with his most popular song, “Bad Man.””

Los Angeles melodic death metal band Nekrogoblikon is headlining the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, in St Paul, on September 19, 2024.

They are bringing Enterprise Earth and Dead Icarus as support. The latter bad features Alex Varkatzas, formerly of gold-selling band Atreyu, and this is their first-ever tour.

Last of the Better Days Ahead is the new collection of songs from Minnesotan Charlie Parr. What’s important to note is that the album is being released on Smithsonian Folkways, the non-profit record label of the Smithsonian Institute.

Talking about the new album, Parr said, “Last of the Better Days Ahead is a way for me to refer to the times I’m living in. I’m getting on in years, experiencing a shift in perspective that was once described by my mom as ‘a time when we turn from gazing into the future to gazing back at the past, as if we’re adrift in the current, slowly turning around.’ Some songs came from meditations on the fact that the portion of our brain devoted to memory is also the portion responsible for imagination, and what that entails for the collected experiences that we refer to as our lives. Other songs are cultivated primarily from the imagination, but also contain memories of what may be a real landscape, or at least one inspired by vivid dreaming.”

You can hear those songs live at this upcoming show at the Palace Theatre in St Paul.

Lucy Rose at Turf Club (12 Oct 2017) - Postponed

UK’s Lucy Rose was actually meant to headline at the Turf Club in 12 Oct 2017, but legendary The Jam singer and songwriter Paul Weller asked her to join him on tour (of course we caught Rose with Weller last October) - it was such a great opportunity that Rose couldn’t resist and had to put her Turf Club show on hold.

Now that the Weller tour is behind her, Rose will finally be headlining in support of her third record Something’s Changing (Arts & Crafts).

Vérité talked about the EP, “Living was written … Thy Art Is Murder Next up was Thy Art Is Murder, a deathcore band also from Australia. I saw these guys last October at The Skyway Theater supporting Born Of Osiris. Unfortunately, they did not catch my or get me going. …

Originally booked at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, the show was upgraded to the Cedar Cultural Center. But even with a slightly larger capacity, the show still sold out, thanks to the popularity of young Irish singer Eden.

We caught Eden (Jonathan Ng) in Sep 2016 and noted that he “has a very passionate following. They try and decipher everything from musical intro to what kind of shoes he is wearing.”

As for support act Vérité, we saw her first headlining gig in May 2016 and she definitely has her own fanbase (called “her dancing section” in front of the stage).

Vérité’s debut album Somewhere in Between is out now on Kobalt Music Recordings.
