My friend, Melinda, was a massive Mojo Nixon fan (not a surprise, considering her love for DJ Lebowitz). I know if Melinda was still alive (Mel passed away in 2010), that she would’ve written an article to honor Mojo Nixon.

I’m no Mojo Nixon expert, but was exposed to his music and humor through Mel, and did love what I heard. He had a couple of hits, like “Elvis is Everywhere” and “Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child”, but it wasn’t until I heard his cover of The Smiths’ “Girlfriend in a Coma”, that it really hit me how funny Mojo Nixon was.

The original Smiths classic is a nice, sad, sweet song about Morrissey’s girlfriend in a coma. Mojo Nixon’s version is upbeat and completely opposite of the original song. It’s honestly one of the best Smiths cover song I’ve ever heard.

In the middle of the song, Nixon starts commenting in the song: “Yeah well, don’t blame me, blame the writer of this song, Morrissey. You know that fruitcake that sings in the Smiths? Ah, he’s celibate. Oh well, I’m Mojo Nixon and I’m the Anti-Morrissey. Can’t you see that I am the Anti-Morrissey. ‘Cause I’m a meat eater. I like my meat, I like it sweet. I like to get laid, and I always get paid. Hey Morrissey, kiss my big hairy butt.”

Priscilla Presley, Dec 22, Knuckleheads, $119.50-$199.50

The ex-wife of music legend Elvis Presley brings her “An Evening With Priscilla Presley” to Knuckleheads for a pre-Xmas princely sum (with an additional $150 more for a meet and greet). The tour made headlines with five appearances in the UK and a recent run in Las Vegas.

The 78-year-old will share personal stories and rare home movies from when she was married to Elvis from 1967 to 1973. Also the subject of a recent documentary, she was also in the news when Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ only child, died in January at age 54.

The Against Me! singer songwriter has announced her second full-length studio album, Hole in My Head, due for release on February 16^th via Polyvinyl Record Co., with the title track as the newest single and Lawrence being one of the lucky stops that should get an early preview of the new music.

Lead single “Dysphoria Hoodie,” was first released in October, some thirty years since her famous band started making music together, and much of the new album was recorded in nearby St Louis. Grace sings on new single “Hole in My Head”, “You can try to outrun all the pain you come from/ That would be a real mistake” and “I need a hole in my head/ I won’t learn to feel less.”, and the accompanying music video was directed by Gilbert Trejo, son of Danny Trejo.

Americana folk/blues artist from NY/Nashville Mya Byrne opens, in support of last year’s “Rhinestone Tomboy” album.

Today (Aug 16) marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley.

Through the magic of digital music and video, Lisa Marie Presley appears in this video with her dad, singing "In the Ghetto".

She released the video and gave an exclusive interview with www.spinner.com about the re-release of this song:

And this video is not only for the 30th anniversary, it's also for a good cause.
All of this -- the song, the video -- is going to charity. The money from the downloads is going to help build another Presley Place in New Orleans, which is a transitional housing program that we started in Memphis. Families come in and live there, get their life skills and get it together. They get jobs ... and then about a year later, they move out when they can get back on their feet. This program has been doing incredibly well for the past few years, so I wanted to branch it out. It's something [Elvis] was very interested in, because it's kinda where he started from. And Presley Place is near where he was raised. I wanted to do this [video] and use it for something good. All fingers pointed towards New Orleans. I landed there to do the video and I looked around when I got off the plane, and it looks like Katrina happened six months ago. That's when it all fell together. And all proceeds -- not a portion of -- all proceeds are going towards building a transitional housing building in New Orleans.

The song was written by Mac Davis and was originally released in 1969. It tells the story of a boy growing up in urban Chicago, and became Elvis first Top 10 single in over 4 years!
