While the masses flocked to Boom Island on Saturday for yearly music festival Rock the Garden, a small but dedicated crowd gathered in the chilled bowl of the Triple Rock to watch the gloom-rock triple bill of locals Pale Spectre and Gloss and British headliners Eagulls.

Pale Spectre features the talents of a slew of prominent Twin Cities musicians: Jeff Cornell and Sean Neppl, bass and guitar, are also in Gloss; drummer Gunnar Kauth played with the late, very great Frankie Teardrop; Patrick Donohoe, who grooved the synths, is in Principality and CLAPS. They all play under the leadership of singer/guitarist Aaron Hammerly whose 80s-inspired guitar pop was the perfect elixir to a day oppressed by heat. Pale Spectre released their first EP back in April called Principles & Faculties

After some quick personnel change and switching up of instruments, Neppl and Cornell morphed into Gloss; bassist/vocalist Jackson Woolsey, Emmy Carter on synths/vocals and drummer Josh Olson rounded out the group. Gloss share similar shoegaze-y elements with Pale Spectre and Eagulls, but have songs that build and erupt, reminding me of post-rock giants like Godspeed! You Black Emperor or Explosions in the Sky. The band has some singles and an EP (Between Themselves, 2013) behind them, but on their Facebook page Olson promised to reveal the release date of a full length album very soon!

Eagulls took to the stage to the swell of moody orchestration and kicked off with “Lemontree” followed by a handful of punchier favorites like “Tough Luck” and “Yellow Eyes,” both from the band’s self-titled debut. The newest album Ullages is a powerful one, but far more somber than the previous record. That said, not one person in the venue could keep still as the music very much encouraged movement. Songs like “Blume” and “Velvet” have a gauzy, bittersweet Smiths-esque vibe thanks to extraordinary guitar work from Liam Matthews and Mark Goldsworthy. “Skipping” is a decidedly darker jam, something along the lines of the Jesus and Mary Chain or the Cure. And it sounded glorious: bassist Tom Kelly’s coal-black bassline rumbling just below an electric shower of guitar as percussionist Henry Ruddel pounded out a menacing beat. Lead singer George Mitchell’s angst-riddled wail was at its most potent during a stunning rendition of “My Life in Rewind.” Even Mitchell himself was unable to resist the languid sway of the melody, slowly rocking his narrow frame side to side while leaning the mic.

Save for a few fist bumps to Goldsworthy from two enthusiastic fans, the band chose to keep things fairly sedate on stage. Mitchell mumbled a few things here and there but most of his words were sadly getting swallowed up by all the white noise. Later in the show, the two fist-bumpers decided to yell, “Cheer up!” at Mitchell. He stared out at them and calmly replied, “Depression can be a beautiful thing.” And when it’s served up by these five young men from Leeds, it really is.

It’s all about Rock the Garden this Saturday. Although it is more like Rock the “Island”, since this year’s music festival is taking place on Boom Island Park (no thanks to the construction taking place at the Walker Art Center).

We’re excited to check out Plague Vendor, a band from Southern California. Typically, bands signed to Epitaph (Bad Religion’s record label) is of the punk variety, so expect short bursts of energy from these guys to kickstart the show.

Local hip hop Grrrl Prty announced that RTG will be the band’s last show as a band (as announced on their Facebook). Certainly not a surprise, considering that their key famous member Lizzo is enjoying a successful solo career and may be off touring too often to do any Grrrl Prty projects or gigs.

We just saw Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at Northrop Auditorium on May 31, 2016, but they are a welcome addition to the show.

Local favorites Hippo Campus will likely draw in a lot of teen girls - as we witness at their Chipotle Cultivate Festival last year.

We haven’t seen M. Ward since his appearance with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him in 2010. Unfortunately, since Deschanel is busy with the successful New Girl, her She & Him project is far and in-between. It’ll be good to catch up with M. Ward, who recently released his eighth studio album More Rain (Merge Records and Bella Union).

Another local favorite Poliça is also on the bill. We got a preview of the entire new album United Crushers in February 2016, before anyone else heard it... so we’re very excited to hear those songs again.

Chance the Rapper’s last appearance in Minneapolis was at the Myth in Oct 2015, so this guy knows how to work the crowd.

The Flaming Lips has gone a long, long way since we last saw the band in 2000. Fun fact: I once saw a Flaming Lips documentary and as part of the Q&A with the director, he called singer Wayne Coyne on speaker phone and it turned out that he was sleeping (at 6pm!)

Still vibrating from the rightful buzz of their last record (2014’s self-titled), post-punk quintet Eagulls will be trekking across these United States in just a few weeks in support of their brand new LP Ullages. The album, which was released in May on Partisian, has been warmly received with some music outlets calling it one of the best records of the year so far - and I agree wholeheartedly. Ullages is the band’s response to the rollercoaster ride that was the last two years for them, being a working band struggling with the feverish popularity that their debut drew and the harsh realities of life in their hometown of Leeds. It’s powerful, dark and gorgeous. Listen to my favorite track “My Life in Rewind” and just TRY to resist the goosebumps. See the band at the Triple Rock Social Club on Saturday, June 18th and prepare to get blown away.

No Glenn Freys, No Don Henleys… though it could have been partially described as the end of the innocence by some musical desperadoes.

Despite my clarifying to anyone asking, I still remained at a bit of a loss of words describing Leeds, England’s Eagulls (pronounced the same but NOT 'The Eagles') who played a breakneck 45 min. set  at the 7^th Street Entry in Minneapolis last week.  The buzzing post-punk/garage rock band is in the midst of a brief U.S. Tour, in support of their self-titled debut (on Partisan Records) that has everyone currently talking.

Social media watchers were somewhat apprehensive about the Minneapolis show, as reports of singer George Mitchell storming off mid-set due to sound issues at their previous gig in Denver were circulating, and the band having to recruit a random fan and bassist Tom Kelly to vocally finish that show, but all fears were waylaid by the band’s full and driving 12-song set.

Cheatahs

London’s Cheatahs opened the evening with a brief set, in support of their own self-titled full-length (on Wichita Recordings), with their own shoegazing guitar sound on tracks like ‘Cut the Grass’, ‘The Swan’ (which has changed since its debut on their earlier EP) and ‘Northern Exposure’.

Singer/guitarist Nathan Hewitt was less animated than when we saw them last fall with Waaves and FIDLAR, but the songs were no less fuzzy and effective.  The band seems to wear its late 80s influences (My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver) on its sleeve, but updates and individualizes them to form a sonic signature as their own.

Eagulls

Eagulls began their unrelenting sonic assault with ‘Tough Luck’ (which could have been mildly interpreted as a dig on the Denver audience), with percussion from drummer Henry Ruddel in high gear, almost from the set opening.  Singer Mitchell shed his jacket after a couple songs, to stand and shout in place, seemingly looking non-plussed in a simple white t-shirt, in a style similar to Joy Division’s Ian Curtis and Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman (they’ve even covered Killing Joke’s ‘Requiem’ as a b-side).  There was an immediate urgency and tense angst to their songs like ‘Yellow Eyes’ and ‘Nerve Endings’ that found  the transfixed Mitchell barking into the mic in an almost antagonistic way towards the crowd.

Crowd reception from the near-full venue and mostly younger onlookers ranged from somewhat stunned watchers, to a few aggression-releasing active ones on the floor.  Guitarist Mark Goldsworthy’s licks were sometimes jangly and Johnny Marr-like, sometimes moody and atmospheric, but always rose to then crash without abandon or quarter.  Mitchell didn’t say much or acknowledge the audience, save the comment of “I need a new throat” after 25 min. in of howling, high-tempo songs.  Lyrics on songs like ‘Hollow Visions’ and ‘Soulless Youth’ as well as the band’s stage presence, are passively confrontational, inviting controversy without much care of any repercussions, in true old-school, post-punk form.

“This is our last song” Mitchell said amongst the feedback, without any thank you or good night and launched into their best-known, ‘Possessed’; he, death-gripping the mic with eyes squinted shut as the band strapped on for the pounding “music-to-crash-your-car-to” beat that is the song’s backbone.  In the end, Eagulls did their job, in punk fashion- Get in, slam you figuratively into the wall a few times, then Get Out. By the time most of the audience figured out what was fully going on; the band, like the (other) Eagles song, was ‘Already Gone’.

Infinity sounds like toy instruments?

Avant-garde minimalist Breton musician Yann Tiersen brings the back-to-basics sound of his earlier works full circle as he plays selections from his latest and 8th studio album, ∞ (Infinity) on Mute Records, an album that centers around the concept of stones-- a repeated theme in the work.

The multi-instrumentalist is best known for composing the soundtrack to French cult-hit Amélie and started the new album’s work with sounds from toy instruments, then electronically manipulating those, adding acoustic instrumentation, then strings, moving from analogue to digital, and back again. Ex-Arab Strap singer-songwriter Aidan Moffat lends his voice to the album closing and Celtic-tinged ‘Meteorite’and the live presentation of this latest work, should be interesting to say the least.

Echo Park, Los Angeles band NO, who wowed us back in March as part of their label’s showcase tour, opens the show, in continued promotion of their debut full-length, El Prado (Arts & Crafts). The six-piece are led by native New Zealander Bradley Carter, who has a baritone similar to The National’s Matt Berninger and a crowd inciting stage presence that is mesmerizing and infectious.

This ain’t no Hotel California…

Eagulls (NOT 'The Eagles') are a rising post-punk/garage rock band from Leeds, England that charges headlong with a discontented and relentless aggression that demands to be heard. Their video for single ‘Nerve Endings’ (featuring a decomposing pig’s brain) was more than controversial, but the buzz also landed them on The Late Show with David Letterman in late January, with the band serenading Letterman and guest Bill Murray on ‘Possessed’.

Their self-titled debut (on Partisan Records) is a mostly gloomy wall of sound that also brings an urgency and persistent tension missing in most music today. This is the kind of in-your-face rock that is reminiscent of The Sex Pistols playing a shoegazing version of Killing Joke – buckle your seatbelts.

Fellow English shoegazers, Cheatahs from London open the show, promoting their own self-titled full-length (on Wichita Recordings), who we saw last year opening for Waaves and FIDLAR.

The Arkeologist is back in the U.S.

Karl Wallinger brings his group, World Party, back to the States, their first such outing since 2012, for a month-long leg of shows, continuing support of Arkeology (Seaview Records), a massive 5-CD/70 track set of new songs, demos, rarities, and unreleased sessions. A new album is also in the works, so fingers are crossed the audiences will get a preview of some of the new work as well.

Wallinger has been steadily back on the scene since 2006, five years after a debilitating aneurysm left him unable to speak, and has a treasure trove of songs to draw from, via the box set and his five previous studio albums.
