American singer/songwriter Upsahl (stylized as UPSAHL) played the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis on October 11th, as part of her first headline tour.
Alternative pop artist King Mala (stylized as KiNG MALA) is the stagename for Areli Castro. She created her stagename from the Spanish word for “mala”, which means “bad b**ch”.
Areli is really excited to be on tour with her self-described “besties” Upsahl. Apparently, Upsahl would later tells us how she was a fan of King Mala’s music when they first met… since then, the two became close friends.
Areli is joined on stage with Alison on drums, Benny on bass, and Bill on guitars. It would seem that her big hit song was “cult leader”, as that song had the biggest response from the crowd.
UPSAHL (aka Taylor Upsahl) released Lady Jesus during the pandemic, in 2021. Obviously not a great time for touring, but it did give some time for Upsahl to work on her music and plan on her first headlining tour. She did confessed on stage that she was nervous and excited about this tour, particular show at least for the past six months, when it was still in the planning stage.
Although her debut only came out last year, she’s been in music since she was five years old, playing the piano. At age 14 she released her self-titled EP, at 15, she self-released her debut album Viscerotonic (as Taylor Upsahl).
Arista Records signed Upsahl in 2018, and since then, she’s been working on various singles and EPs for the label. Her Arista debut studio album Lady Jesus came out last year.
As you can see from the setlist, she basically played all the singles from Lady Jesus, including the title track, “Douchebag”, and “IDFWFEELINGS”. Every song had fans in the front singing back Upsahl’s lyrics. These die hard fans were very supportive of Upsahl, and some of them had travelled to multiple cities to see her. There were a couple of friends who had driven to five different shows, and they’ll probably continue to follow the rest of the tour.
The only cover song on the set was Dominic Fike’s “3 Nights”, a song about getting nude pictures from a girl at the “City of Palms”.
Upsahl saved her biggest hit song for the very last song during her encore. The song, of course, was “Drugs”, which has over 2 million streams, as well as ranked #31 on the US Rock charts.
Upsahl’s Lady Jesus is out now on Arista.
