Natalie Jane’s first-ever North American headline run – is completely sold-out. She will be stopping by St Paul, at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, on March 23, 2024.

Jane recently shared her new single, “Tattoos”, a song she wrote with frequent collaborators Doc Daniel, Pink Slip (also producer), Cal Shapiro and Miranda Glory. The teaser for “Tattoos” racked up over 25 million combined views on social media prior to the song’s release, thanks to numerous reposts and endorsements by popular musicians, including Billie Eilish.

Wisconsin’s Armchair Boogie is headlining the Turf Club on March 23, 2024, in support of their fourth studio album Hard Times & Deadlines.

The ‘newgrass’ band has an unconventional lineup of banjo with acoustic and electric guitars backed rhythms on electric bass and drums. They teeter between bluegrass and funk, with fans dubbing them as ‘funkgrass’.

We previously mentioned the band opened for Kitchen Dwellers in November 2023.

We last saw Sleater-Kinney at the final Rock the Garden show in June 2022 and noted, “Sleater-Kinney was the co-headliner of Rock the Garden. The Olympia group is touring in support of their tenth studio album, Path of Wellness. We’ve been following this Riot Grrrl band since the mid-90s, having enjoying bands such as Bikini Kill, Team Dresch, and Bratmobile. We’ve seen SK since 1998, and was sad to learn that their original drummer Janet Weiss left the band.”

Black Belt Eagle Scout to open. We saw her in 07 Apr 2023 and said, “Most of Black Belt Eagle Scout’s music is influenced by KP’s ancestral land that overlooks the Puget Sound. Her latest album The Land, the Water, the Sky is even dedicated to the place. KP grew up around music with her dad a powwow singer and her participating as a jingle dress dancer. She was also influenced by the Northwest sounds of Nirvana and Hole, teaching herself to play guitar and drums by watching bootleg VHS tapes of the bands. ”

Canadian band The Rural Alberta Advantage (The RAA) is returning to the area… playing their biggest venue yet, at First Avenue, on March 23, 2024.

RAA recently shared a new song, “FSHG”, ahead of their Winter North American tour. “FSHG” was the last song written for The Rise & The Fall, and a late addition, recorded live off the floor in their final visit to the studio for the record. Nils Edenloff (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard) explains, “I wanted us to record ‘FSHG’ live off the floor and feel like a counterpoint to the rest of the album. We laboured over so many minute details on 'The Rise & The Fall', and I wanted to record ‘FSHG' while it still felt organic and raw. Lock it up before we had a chance to tinker with it too much. I also wanted people listening to the record to feel as though they’re peeking in on a brief and momentary event. So much of the album deals with events and snippets of time, and with ‘FSHG', as the song progresses it starts to evaporate, pulling away from the listener and fading into nothing. Sort of reminding us that not everything lasts forever.”

We saw RAA in Feb 2023 and wrote, “The Rural Alberta Advantage (RAA) is a mouthful, a name lifted from an email from lead singer Nils Edenloff’s brother who wrote that he was planning to explore “the rural Alberta advantage” on a trip back home to expansive Canadian prairie. ”

Even hundreds of miles away from the Delta, the Voices were heard, the Voices were strong--

One of the more unique and immersive concert experiences, Voices of Mississippi came to the Midwest Trust Center on the campus of JCCC in Overland Park, KS for an informative and entertaining evening in celebration of the music, art, and storytelling traditions of the Blues originators in Mississippi.

Based on the recent double Grammy Award–winning Voices of Mississippi: Artists and Musicians Documented by William Ferris 3CD/1DVD box set (available here from Amazon), the live program featured musical performances integrated with film, audio recordings, and rare photographs by folklorist Bill Ferris, who hosted the evening via several video segments.

This rare outing was only one of five shows on this leg, after debuting at the University of Mississippi in 2021 and with an impressive multi-show run at NYC’s Lincoln Center last year, so it was fortunate that the ensemble made a local stop. 

Featured musicians included Ruthie Foster, fife and drum duo Shardé Thomas and Chris Mallory, brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, and bassist Marcus Machado to all form an exceptional and unique all-star blues, folk, and gospel collective.

The show was anchored by Ferris’ video interludes- his created and curated archive of footage, photos, and interviews done from the 1960s to the 1990s that took the audience into the middle of a Ken Burns-style documentary about all of the storytelling creativity borne along the east banks of the mighty river in Hill Country, as it’s called.

Mississippi native Ferris was born in Vicksburg and became fascinated at a very early age by the surrounding culture and the musical roots around him, to begin archiving that heritage, later in academia also connecting together its origins and its overall larger place in the fabric that is distinctively American.

Most of the performers have personal roots in Mississippi including the fife and drum duo of Thomas and Mallory, she being the granddaughter of the late Otha Turner, credited with the keeping that musicianship in blues alive (not that we’ve really heard of it much before) and she also took over his Rising Stars Fife & Drum Band, helping insure the tradition will continue.

Texas-born (shhh!) singer-guitarist Ruthie Foster hit the stage like a lightning bolt, her voice immediately soaring to the highest corners of the hall on “Richland Woman Blues” and her own “Runaway Soul”. Foster is a 4x Grammy nominee and 10x Blues Music Award winner, and has always felt a strong connection to Mississippi blues since her musical beginnings with the late Mississippi legend Jessie Mae Hemphill serving as an early mentor.

Guitarist Luther and drummer Cody Dickinson form the foundation of respected band North Mississippi Allstars.and the pair are also the sons of well-known piano player Jim Dickinson, who was in bands like The Dixie Flyers and would go on to produce Big Star, Toots and the Maytalls, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and many more.

Thomas took lead for BB King’s “The Thrill is Gone” and the tribute continued with “Why I Sing the Blues” before Foster completely awestruck the audience with an acapella version of a Son House classic, accented by the usually impeccable acoustics inside the revered hall.

Because, like good barbecue, every region has its own flavored nuance that reflects the local culture, the spicy of Mississippi was mixed with the sweet of Kansas City, as popular area blues singer and guitarist Danielle Nicole surprised the audience, by joining the band onstage for one mid-set song.

Music was not the only subject for the video segments as one centered on the literary works of famous Southern writers Eudora Welty and Alice Walker, in rare archival interview footage and the influence of the gospel church on blues music was also notated

Mississippi Fred McDowell was honored as an originator with two covers and the show peaked towards the end, moving more into that traditional gospel territory with hymns “Glory Glory Hallelujah” and “When the Saints Go Marching In” which found a marching Thomas and Mallory parading into the audience before rejoining everyone back on stage, for a finish with flourish.

A concert in tandem with a multimedia time-capsule that fed the brain, warmed the heart, and brought forward the soul, Voices of Mississippi was that kind of rare live event, that satisfied on multi-levels and shouldn’t be missed, if additional dates are announced.

“All people have a story, and they’re waiting for someone to listen,” Ferris recently said. These Voices are very much worth that listen.

Looking ahead to 2023, several more announcements hit this week- a 2^nd stadium night for Taylor Swift (despite the TM outages and ridiculous aftermarket prices), Billy Joel/Stevie Nicks at Arrowhead in August, John Mellencamp playing two nights in April at The Midland, Toto returning next March, and Tyler Childers w Marcus King next June at Starlight.

Formed in Gainesville, FL in 2015 by drummer Jesse Frimmel, the three-piece (Frimmel, singer Victor Viramontes-Pattison, and guitarist Matthew Fowler) has become a band to watch within the pop-rock/alt scene with latest single, “Put You Through Me” and keeps pressing more vinyl copies of full-length Be More, as it keeps selling out.

Arrive early for the openers--

TITUS (aka Randolph Newman) is a NJ based songwriter/producer who released 3 mixtapes with his first group, Zoo Troop Gang, and released “Damned If I Do” via Soundcloud's artist division just weeks ago. Taking influences from Blink 182, Taking Back Sunday, Dipset and Lil Wayne, his EP showcases his ability to fuse the heyday of pop punk with the lyricism & swagger of hip-hop.

The Eagles, T-Mobile Center, $129-$429

The Eagles (current members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit) along with Vince Gill and band continue on their Hotel California 2022 Tour featuring the classic album performed live in its entirety, accompanied by an orchestra and choir. After a short intermission, the band will perform a full set of their greatest hits.

Hotel California is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26x Platinum by the RIAA. Released in 1976, it topped the charts and won two GRAMMY Awards and several of the record’s songs from the album have never been performed live since the original tour.

Tickets have always been pricey ever since “hell froze over” in the mid 90’s and the band reunited, but we did catch Don Henley solo back in 2017, playing more than half his set of Eagles songs.

Danielle Nicole, Nov 23 and Nov 25, Knuckleheads,$35-$60

Danielle Nicole Schnebelen began singing publicly with her parent's bands as a youth and took ahold of her full time in her early 20s. As a founding member of the "Heavy Blues" sibling band Trampled Under Foot, they took top honors at the International Blues Challenge in the US, propelling them internationally and on several Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruises.

It wasn't until 2015, when Nicole set out on her own with her "distinctive, inventive bass work"—which resulted in her not only becoming the first woman to ever be nominated/awarded in the category of Instrumentalist ~ Bass in The Blues Foundation's 2012 Blues Music Awards. Other accolades include a 2019 Grammy Nomination for Contemporary Blues Album; 2 Blues Music Awards- Contemporary Female Artist and her second Instrumentalist ~ Bass, and 3 Independent Blue Music Awards. It’s her 6^th Annual Thanksgiving appearance at the club, so come be part of the tradition.

The Rainmakers, Knuckleheads, $20

The classic KC original rock band, fronted by Bob Walkenhorst, which had a handful of radio of hits ("Let My People Go-Go", "Downstream", "Small Circles", more) in the late 1980s-90s in the US and Europe, especially Norway.

We caught them live back in June, in JoCo for their first show back from the pandemic and heard all the favorites that were all over Midwest rock radio. No word if bassist Rich Ruth will again make the trip from Nashville to play at this show, as he did in June. Either way, a perfect end to a weekend of shopping and turkey.

Coming up next week is the “An Evening With Kristin Hersh & Grant Lee Phillips”, starring Grant-Lee Phillips (formerly of Grant Lee Buffalo) and Kristin Hersh (formerly of Throwing Muses).

We’re fairly excited about the team-up of these 90’s musicians, particularly with Hersh reuniting with former Throwing Muses bandmate (and step-sister) Tanya Donelly. Unfortunately the only Donelly appearance will be in Boston... but fear not, Donelly and her band Belly will be in Minneapolis in Rocktober 2018 (read more about it on news.weheartmusic.com).

As for Nashville’s Grant-Lee Phillips, his 9th solo album Widdershins is out now on Yep Roc Records. Phillips explained the title, “Widdershins…it’s an old word. Moving counterclockwise, spiraling backwards. The album begs the question, in what direction are we moving?”

One of the biggest pop singer Lorde is headlining the Xcel Energy Center on Friday. Hot hip hop band Run The Jewel will open.

If you show up really early, you’ll get a chance to check out Swedish recording artist Tove Styrke. Styrke’s forthcoming album Sway is due on May 4th, but you can get to hear a preview of her album, live at this upcoming show.

After winning a Grammy for producing Chance the Rapper, Brasstracks is taking the next step in their music career by headlining their first-ever tour. The group was last seen in town with Jack Garrett in Oct 2016 and with Gramatik in Mar 2016.

Brasstracks will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on Sunday and they’re bringing S'natra along.
