Immediately after the release of The Cactus Blossoms’ new album, One Day, the American duo appeared at three stores, performing at Mill City Sound (in Hopkins), Down In The Valley (in Golden Valley), and Electric Fetus (in Minneapolis), all on February 12th.

Local Haley Bonar (who recently changed her billing name to simply Haley, according to City Pages) just wrapped up her 2017 UK tour for Impossible Dream ... ending the tour at Paradiso in Amsterdam, Netherlands, last night (08 April 2017).

We previously caught Haley’s hometown show at First Avenue in January 2017 and noted that we were glad to have Bonar back in Minneapolis.

For last night’s show, Haley was playing as a trio because her lead guitarist was sent home after the London show at the Dome on 06 April 2017. The part of the Paradiso that Haley played only held 250 capacity and tickets were €8.

Laura Marling is returning with a new album Short Movie, set to be release through Ribbon Music on March 23rd (next week). To promote the album, Marling will be doing a handful of dates, starting with SXSW this week..... Fear not, she'll be returning with a "full band" this July and early August.

Short Movie is Marling's fifth studio album in seven years, a remarkable achievement for someone who just turned 25. Recording since the age of 17 (yes, we've been covering her since 2007).

Fans may be surprise to see that with Short Movie, that she is going electric... Along with plugging in for the first time, Marling chose to produce the album herself. With the "blind" recording process, the record may sound bolder and looser than her previous albums.

Marling co-produced the album with her drummer Matt Ingram and studio engineer Dan Cox. Recorded at Urchin Studios in London, she was joined by her longtime collaborator and friend Ruth De Turberville on cello, Nick Pini on bass and Tom Hobden.

Also worth noting, three of Marling's albums have been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and she is a two-time BRIT Award nominee, winning the UK’s GRAMMY-equivalent for “Best British Female Artist” in 2011. That same year she beat out an array of international talent to the title of “Best Solo Artist” at the NME Awards.

Levitation France's SXSW show is going on right now at the French Legation Museum – the oldest home in Austin, Texas.

In partnership with Austin Angers Creative, at Le French Tech Club SXSW, Levitation France is bringing in a week long event which includes discussions and speakers, film, music, and French food.

This event is FREE and open to the public. No RSVP is required.

Priority entrance given to SXSW badge-holders and wristbands followed by public guests.

Israel Nash is from Texas and has listened to a lot of Neil Young, Pink Floyd and country. It's a great mix and was truly amazing. I had heard his cover of one of Pink Floyd's songs from Meddle and his stuff was just as cool.

His first visit is to the Billy Reid/Third Man Records Austin Shindig, presented by K-SWISS, which is taking place today, Wednesday, March 18, from 11:30 am – 8 pm at Weather Up, located at 1808 E. Cesar Chavez.

This is the fifth annual Austin Shindig for Billy Reid and media partner American Songwriter Magazine, and the third year the Alabama-based fashion company will return to Weather Up in East Austin.

Steve Gunn

Dan writes:

I had heard previously that Steve Gunn is for guys that like guitar-based bands. Similar to Television. Lots of droning and interplay between the two guitarists. Good way to start the day.

Gunn's latest album is Way Out Weather, out now on Paradise Of Bachelors. Expect to see Gun's next album to be out on Matador Records.

Bully

Bully is from Nashville.... noisy pop rock. Lots of fuzz - guitars and bass, I'm sure they like bands like Hole. Screaming choruses and the like.

Bully will be on tour all spring in the US with fellow Nashville grunge band JEFF The Brotherhood. They have also announced a string of June dates supporting Best Coast, UK headlining shows and festivals in both the US and UK including The Great Escape in Brighton, Northside in Brooklyn and Pitchfork Festival in Chicago.

Olivia Jean

Next up is Olivia Jean, full of sass and great pop tunes. She played solo and Black Belle's material. Judy thinks Jean's a little like Blondie and Chrissie Hynde thrown in.

Jean's album Bathtub Love Killings is available now via Third Man Records.

Natalie Prass' voice is getting stronger after all of the touring. Fun set including a Janet Jackson cover and a song she said was a MF'ing Disney song which she proceeded to sing holding a plastic Godzilla. She will be in Minneapolis in May at the Triple Rock. Wrong venue for her, but next time she will be in a bigger room.

British singer Kate Bush is at the start of her Before the Dawn residency at Hammersmith Apollo in London. This is her first live performance since her The Tour of Life in 1979, so it's no surprise that within minutes of the announcement, that all tickets to her new 2014 Before the Dawn shows were sold out.

Dan flew to England for this once-in-a-lifetime show, and he sent in this report.

No photographs were taken, per Kate Bush's request, and I will say all abided by her wishes. She did release pictures to the media.

It was amazing that as large the venue was, that no one talked at all during the show. She had the whole place eating out of the palm of her hand.

As for the show, it is comprised of 6 songs, then "The Ninth Wave" suite for the first half. Second set is the suite from the Ariel LP, then two songs. Set lists are the same night to night.

Her voice sounded great. The band is amazing David Rhodes from Peter Gabriel's band, Omar Hakim on drums, John Giblin on bass (played in Simple Minds for a period of time). Nano V on percussion - I can't spell his last name without completely butchering it. They just rocked, and from where we were sitting, dead center in the balcony, we could hear every nuance in what they played.

I should mention her son Bertie is in the show and actually sings one of the songs in the Ariel suite. Credit to the kid to do so, and also encourage Kate to do the show.

Highlights for me included "King of the Mountain" - I actually had goosebumps, and that doesn't happen often at a show. "Joannie," which was a surprise, as the song isn't one of my favorites. The end of the Ariel suite, she lets David Rhodes just rock out and they have a dance of sorts that just builds and builds to the end. Lastly, "Cloudbusting" is a great way to finish with the whole place singing the chorus.

Never thought I would ever see her, and to get to go twice in a week is a great way to check one off from my bucket list.

The other thing that has gotten a lot of attention on her forums is the merchandise. She is selling tons and people are standing in line for 30+ minutes to do so.

Sounds like she made a sweet deal with God.
