The How Long Gone Podcast will be ending their tour at the Turf Club, in St Paul, on July 1, 2024. The show is hosted by bicoastal elites, Chris Black and Jason Stewart… It was started during the pandemic boredom gave Chris (in New York) and Jason (Los Angeles) something to talk about and catching up… and accidentally “creating a cosmos instead.” As Chris told Vogue, the greatest reward is “creating a universe of interesting and engaging people who just want to come together to have a good time.”

Some of their guests includes playwright Jeremy O. Harris, musician Phoebe Bridgers, actress Hari Nef, etc. Recorded up to three times a week.

Their latest episode (#648) is about an hour long and they talked to DJ and songwriter, Alex Chapman about “a G6 at Pilates, Diplo's Architectural Digest home in Jamaica, how Alex landed in West Hollywood, how Pride month hit different if you're a gay DJ, Normani, an Italian sex cave, we explain the essence of "trade," zoology, how to please the olds and youngs, his childhood basketball career, Scotty Pippen is likely hung, NYU dorm life, opening for Kim Petras on tour, divas who've been dealt a more difficult hand, and his dream producers to work with.”

New York, by the way of New Zealand, Dion Lunadon will be in town, headlining the 7th Street Entry, on July 3rd, 2024. Dion had previously been in such bands as The D4 and A Place To Bury Strangers (appearing and writing on their studio albums Worship, Transfixiation, and Pinned). Also, he can be found in Flowers Of Evil and Crocodiles… so this guy has been around!

Dion left A Place to Bury Strangers just as the pandemic hit in 2020 and focus on writing his own music. By June 2020, he released “When Will I Hold You Again”, a duet with Kate Clover.

Celebrating America’s birthday this July 4, 2024, at the Minneapolis Riverfront with some fireworks, live music (no bands have been announced yet), and food trucks. This is the first time the Red, White, and Boom! event is taking place since the pandemic shut down the celebration in 2019. 2024 is the first time we are getting fireworks!

Lineup and schedule are subject to change, so be sure to the website for the latest information.

4th of July Fireworks event returns to the Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront!

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) will resume hosting its “Red, White and Boom!” Fourth of July event on the Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront in 2024!

This year festivities will take place on the west side of the river, at Water Works and the Stone Arch Bridge parking lot. Live music and food trucks are planned to start at 6 pm on July 4, 2024, with fireworks at 10 pm.

“People love Fourth of July fireworks on the Downtown Minneapolis riverfront. We heard that from communities we serve, partners we work with, and our own staff, so we’re excited to bring back this beloved tradition,” said Al Bangoura, MPRB Superintendent.

The Minneapolis Red, White and Boom event was last held in 2019. Large events were not permitted due to pandemic restrictions in 2020, then the MPRB shifted to hosting a handful of smaller Fourth of July events spread across the city in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, a patriotic laser light show celebrated the Fourth of July at Boom Island Park.

The Stone Arch Bridge will be completely closed during Red, White and Boom this year due to a repair project by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT). If you’re interested in more information on the Stone Arch Bridge repair, MNDOT is hosting a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, 5:30-6:30 pm. More details regarding Red, White and Boom viewing and access for will be added to the Red, White and Boom page as planning progresses.

Los Angeles’ rising underground punk star Kate Clover (with her band Brandon Welchez on guitarist, Bill on bass, and David S. Field on drums) headlined the Turf Club, in St Paul, on Saturday, April 6th, in support of her sophomore album The Apocalypse Dream. Last year, she toured with The Hives, select dates with Superchunk, and F**ked Up.

The band, themselves, are incredibly well-dressed and looks like a rather handsome family… which incidentally, Clover’s husband, Brandon Welchez, is the guitarist in the band.

Crocodiles (22 June 2012)

Welchez is actually in another band called Crocodiles, who we in June 2012, and said, “The last time I saw Crocodiles was at the Turf Club supporting Brandon’s wife’s band, the Dum Dum Girls (in Oct 12, 2011). I was pretty surprised by their energy then, as well, as I had expected them to be laid back, too-cool-for-school Cali surf-rockers, but Brandon Welchez is completely and utterly absorbed in the music from the minute he hits the stage. This show was no different and the enthusiasm and intensity was a bit higher, with Brandon jumping into the crowd to pogo around a couple of times, spitting profusely on the stage during songs and whirling around so much that he unplugged his guitar.”

Clover’s set is mostly from The Apocalypse Dream, and have been consistently the same for most of the tour. For the Turf Club show, she decided at the last minute to play “No More Romance.”

“Follow Your Heart” ended her set.

Monica LaPlante (30 Oct 2016)

Opening the show was local Monica LaPlante. We’ve seen LaPlante a few times, but our first time seeing her pretty funny at a Halloween show in 2016 at the Triple Rock Social Club, where we described her as, “Local musician Monica LaPlante opened up the show, fifteen minutes fashionably late. The band was in the Halloween spirit, dressing up as a reverse Robert Palmer and his voluptuous band. With her new album Noir available digitally (and now physically) via Hollander Records, the band is climbing up on the local radio stations, including The Current and Radio K.”

For the Turf Club show, LaPlante said that she’s been addicted to Turner Classics and generally speaking in her oh-so-southern movie accent. She ended her set with her hit song, “Hope You're Alone.”

Also on the bill was Spit Takes, a new riot-girl-ish, lead by singer VansAnn. I got a sense that they were inspired by Bikini Kill, but according to the group, they align themselves with British punk rock X-Ray Spex (who Kathleen Hanna admitted to being a fan of too).

They were a lot of fun to watch, and hopefully we’ll catch more of them in the future.

Los Angeles, by-way-of New Jersey, singer-songwriter and producer Sam MacPherson is on his first headlining “Powerlines Tour” … and he’ll stop by the 7th Street Entry on April 29th.

Named one of the top New Jersey artist to watch in 2023, MacPherson previously opened for Chelsea Cutler and The Brook & The Bluff, and collaborated with Stephen Sanchez, Jonah Kagen, Garrett Nash, VINCINT, and Quinn Lewis, among others.

MacPherson’s forthcoming project is slated for release later this year via Elektra Entertainment.

Los Angeles based alt-folk singer-songwriter Mikey Ferrari to open. He recently singed to Neon Gold Records (HAIM, Matt Maeson, et. al) to release “Crash Course” from upcoming Stories From Montana EP.

Ferrari adds details on the song, “Last year [when it] was a particularly dark time for me. I was living out of my car, sleeping on various friends’ couches while I was writing and recording this project. I felt like I was doing so much and was so busy but at the same time had lost track and feeling of myself and my identity despite unpacking so much of the baggage of years prior. The song is about states of depression and trauma I’ve experienced and how I’ve really questioned if I was really living a life or just inhabiting my own body. A year later I am so happy to be in a different place than I was. I am very grateful to be able to say that.”

Royal Blood’s current single ‘Lights Out’ has reached No. 1 on the rock radio chart, this is the band’s second #1 song (their other hit song is ‘Little Monster’).

With How Did We Get So Dark? already out and debuted #1 on the UK album charts, the band came on the late night talk shows (including Late Night with Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Late Show with James Corden) to perform their hit single ‘Lights Out’.

Earlier this year, Nightlands' Minneapolis show on March 18th at the Cedar Cultural Center was canceled due to a snowstorm.

That's right, Sebadoh's first LP in 14 years, Defend Yourself, is out now on Joyful Noise Recordings.

This band formed in 1986, for a time in the 90s, along with Pavement and Guided by Voices, help pioneer an era of low-fi indie-rock. The band broke up in 1999, but reformed under the guidance of original founder Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr), without Eric Gaffney (who is currently busy with his own music project called Fields of Gaffney).

Sebadoh is also scheduled to play at the Turf Club in St Paul this Monday.

The San Diego-based noise-pop band, Crocodiles, brought some amazing energy to their show last night at the Entry despite having just driven all the way from Vancouver where they had played the night before. Early in their set, singer Brandon Welchez joked that they were all pretty stinky and “would trade merch. for Lady Speedstick.”

The last time I saw Crocodiles was at the Turf Club supporting Brandon’s wife’s band, the Dum Dum Girls. I was pretty surprised by their energy then, as well, as I had expected them to be laid back, too-cool-for-school Cali surf-rockers, but Brandon Welchez is completely and utterly absorbed in the music from the minute he hits the stage. This show was no different and the enthusiasm and intensity was a bit higher, with Brandon jumping into the crowd to pogo around a couple of times, spitting profusely on the stage during songs and whirling around so much that he unplugged his guitar.

As headliners, Brandon was also a bit chattier in between songs thanking everyone for coming, mentioning they liked playing Minneapolis and introducing a song by saying they had had a rough couple of weeks leading up to the show and asking if everyone else hated their bosses. And, judging by the reaction he received, most of the audience did not hate their bosses. Regardless, Brandon went on to say that the next song was about “punching your boss in the face until he dies.”

During their 50 minute set they played a good mix of songs from all of their albums, including “Endless Flowers,” “Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9)” and “Dark Alley” (all from their latest release, Endless Flowers, on Frenchkiss Records), as well as, “Mirrors,” “Hearts of Love,” “Stoned to Death,” “Sleep Forever” and “I Wanna Kill.”

I highly recommend seeing them live on the remaining dates on their tour, but be sure to bring some ear plugs or prepare to have your ears ringing for days because they are loud!

Crocodiles are a noise pop band from San Diego. I've read that they're influenced by Jesus and Mary Chain, so I can see why Amy would love this band (hopefully if things work out, she'll be covering the band at 7th Street in Minneapolis this June 22nd*).

Crocodiles' third album, Endless Flowers, came out June 5th via Frenchkiss Records. The album was recorded in Berlin, and features the band's full five-piece lineup (I mean who wouldn't want to be part of a fun travel to Germany for recording music!)

The band is currently in the middle of their Summer tour to promote Endless Flowers, expect to see all five band members: singer/guitarist Brandon Welchez, guitarist Charles Rowell, keyboardist Robin Eisenberg, bassist Marco Gonzalez, and drummer Anna Schulte.

Brooklyn's Fang Island got their name from a fictitious island, briefly mentioned in an Onion headline about Donald Rumsfeld's secret lair.

Recently, Fang Island premiere another song, "Sisterly", from their forthcoming new album, Major, at Pitchfork.

Singer/guitarist Jason Bartell had this to say about their music:

One of our core ideas has always been that our songs would be all of your favorite parts of the song that other bands make you wait 8 minutes to get to. We wanted to be the band that's nothing but your favorite hooks back to back.

Yes, I know, Dinosaur Jr broke up in the late 90's. Then about five years ago, the band got back together and produced their album, Beyond. Since then, J Mascis did some solo stuff, created another band called Sweet Apple, but last year, I noticed he came back to his Dinosaur Jr project with a constant touring schedule.

The band announced that they have a new album, I Bet On Sky, coming out in September on [PIAS] Records. The album marks the band's 10th LP since their original debut, Dinosaur, in 1985.

LAST DINOSAURS myspace.com Last Dinosaurs are from Brisbane, Australia. They recently announced their video for "Andy", which you can watch via Youtube. The song comes from their debut album, In A Million Years, which came out in March in Australia… but was never officially released in the States. The band is currently playing in London (13 Jun: Breakout Club Night, 16 Jun: Lovebox Festival) and will be returning to Australia to play Splendour In The Grass.
