Luaka Pop alumni Cornershop recently announced their new Singhles Club series: six tracks for £6. I did listen to the preview song, it's a Christmas song.

Guitar legends Delicate Steve are wrapping up the final leg of their US tour. In support of their summer release "Positive Force", these guys have been touring with the likes of Yeasayer and Tune-Yards. The most interesting part of their story is how they streamed their album. Different bands from the label released a individual song off the release and just posted the stream link on their Facebook page. I think that's a brilliant idea for label mates to work together and share other music. The bands that released Delicate Steve tracks were Ra Ra Riot, Givers, Yellow Ostrich, Yeasayer, Fang Island, Akron/Family, Javelin, Tune-Yards, and Wild Belle.

I was lucky enough to catch Delicate Steve in San Antonio back in 2010 open for Ra Ra Riot. Love the guitar instrumentals morphed into a "Local Natives" type set. If you haven't heard Delicate Steve's current release "Positive Force", it will blow you away like Tame Impala did to our very own writer Jess and many rabid fans.

I can't wait to see these guys play in New Orleans at the tiny Circle Bar, which reminds me of Batman's cave. Last time I was there the band Exitmusic walked out displeased with the sound quality.

A while back I wrote an article on Cornershop's debut EP, Lock Stock & Double-Barrel and mentioned a little known fact: there is a hidden Johnny Cash song ("Houston Hash") at the end of the EP.

It is a really fun song about a truck driver who does whatever it takes to get home for some Houston Hash.   The coolest part is the recipe that's mentioned in the song:

She uses canned tomatoes, ground beef and onions too
and she mixes it all up with a cup of rice
She takes the ground beef and onions and nice green peppers
and she puts them in a pan
and cooks them until they look really great
And then she mixes it all together with a little chili pepper
some tomatoes and some sauce
and she puts it in the oven to bake

I am really happy that agathafrye have decided to actually bake her own Houston Hash. I've included an excerpt of her article below:

On my way to the doctor's office today, I enjoyed a Johnny Cash song that seemed to be called "Houston Hash." The song describes a long haul trucker who spends an inordinate amount of time thinking about a delicious dish that his honey cooks up for him at the end of a trip. The song provides the whole recipe, which is essentially a rice, pepper, onion, canned tomato, and ground beef casserole. As it happened, I was particularly hungry while I listened to this song, and this Houston Hash recipe became very interesting to me.

Bastardized Vegetarian Houston Hash 3 tbsp olive oil 1 yellow onion 12 baby red/yellow/orange peppers 2 tbsp chili powder 1 package fake chorizo (soyrizo) 2 cups brown rice 2 cans organic crushed tomatoes

Back in 1993, I first heard about Cornershop doing some sort of protest against Morrissey for his song "Asian Rut". This was really uncall for, because if you listen to the lyrics carefully, Morrissey is singing about an Asian (in the West, we know Asians as Indians, don't ask) who got murdered by white hooligans. The song even identifies the storyteller as "I'm just passing through here, on my way to somewhere civilise."

Still, the protest got them noticed and the NME and Melody Makers picked up this story.

I saw Lock, Stock and Double-Barrel EP around this time for really cheap ($1 at Amoeba, baby!). I was thinking I'd dislike it, but you know what? I loved it.

By late 1997, their song "Brimful of Asha" made it BIG on the DJ dancefloor and eventually MTV.

So, the song is "England's Dreaming". I like the energy of this song, some crazy instruments thrown in and it looks like it was sung through a riot loudspeaker. At one point in the song, the singer (Tjinder Singh) sings out:

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour.

The followed by "Fight the Power!"

If you know your Smiths songs, he was actually emulating Morrissey from "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" (which is a play off "Heaven Knows I'm Missing Him Now" by Sandie Shaw, but that is another story).

Trivia: It is not advertised or written anywhere, but there is a fifth hidden track off of Lock, Stock and Double-Barrel. The song is "Houston Hash" by Johnny Cash. It tells the story of a truck driver who does whatever it takes (even breaking the law), just to get a taste of that sweet, sweet houston hash.
