New Jersey-born and Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Nessa Barrett will be headlining the Palace Theatre this March 14, 2023. The singer had a viral hit song with over 100 million streams for her breakout single “Pain”.

Alt-pop singer Isabel LaRosa to open. LaRosa recently signed a record deal with Slumbo Labs/RCA Records for her debut EP, I’m Watching You. Her new single, “I’m Yours” came out in October 2022.

LaRosa commented on the single, “This song was inspired by the feeling of having a crush on someone who you’re not dating, but wish you were… I really wanted to encapsulate the rush of emotions as you get closer to this person physically and emotionally. When my brother Thomas and I were writing it, we wanted to give people the feeling of driving fast, with all the windows down, when you’ve finally lost your inhibitions and let that person in.”

Tennessee quartet Colony House is out on tour in support of The Cannonballers. The tour kicks off Feb 11, 2023, and will stop in at the Fine Line in Minneapolis on March 15.

We caught Colony House in July 2015 and wrote, “Colony House is a Tennessee-based indie rock trio with Christian roots, as brothers Caleb Chapman (vocals) and Will Chapman (drums) are the sons of singer Stephen Curtis Chapman and were joined by guitarist Scott Mills, with bassist and keyboardist Parke Avery coming along for the tour. Debut album When I Was Younger had just come out, with several songs having a pronounced, bigger sound, like lead single, ‘Silhouettes’. The band didn’t have a lot of time with only a five-song set, but half of them stayed around to back Needtobreathe, during their own headlining performance.”

Soul-powered rock & roll band Mac Saturn have been around since 2014. They were previously in town with Dirty Honey in August 2022.

Opening the show is rising rock artist Hollywood-based, by the way of London, Billy Tibbals, hot off the release of his new single “Hollywood Baby” via Silver Arrow Records. The song was produced by Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), and harkens straight up 70s rock ‘n’ roll, complete with pianos and aggressive guitar licks.

New York’s Show Me the Body is headlining the Underground Music Café in Minneapolis on March 15th, 2023. I’ve never heard of the music venue, it seems they’re relatively new with social presence started in 2019. Capacity is 150 and looks like a café in the day time.

Looking over the bands they’ve booked, it seems this is a great place for young music fans. It reminds me of The Garage (in Burnsville) that caters to all-ages punk shows.

Show Me the Body is also bringing along Jesus Piece, Scowl, Zulu, and TRiPPJONES were asked to open.

Robert Plant, the English musician best known as the lead singer and lyricist for Led Zeppelin, will be headlining the Orpheum Theatre this Thursday. Billed as Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters, they’ll be playing tracks from his 11th solo album Carry Fire.

The upcoming show is long sold out (even at a higher-than-average pricing of $75 a ticket), but to justify the higher price, fans who bought a ticket online, were also given a copy of the new album.

Seth Lakeman, who contributes viola and fiddle to three tracks from Carry Fire, will open the show.

The last time we saw California neo-hippie band The Mowgli’s, they were co-headlining with Canadian Lights in 2015. We noted, “A spirited feel-good 65min. of hummable tunes followed, many culled from their latest, Kids in Love (Photo Finish/Island Records) which was released earlier this spring. ‘Love is Easy’ was dedicated to anyone “who’s had their heart smashed into a bazillion pieces” and co-vocalist Katie Jayne Earl took time out in the set to re-inforce the band’s mission of spreading love and kindness, and mentioned that all the band’s proceeds from ‘Room for All of Us’ were going to charity.”

Be sure to show up early to check out Mainland. The post-punk/pop taco-loving trio (singer Jordan Topf, guitarist Corey Mullee and bassist Alex Pitta) recently appeared on Billboard to talk about their “Hometown” release (Feb 16). This isn’t the first time Mainland opened for Mowgli’s, they were previously billed together in February 2016 (their first time in Minneapolis), and we said, “… plays a quick-paced, hooky hybrid of punk, garage, new wave, and high-energy alternative. The crowd appreciated the adrenalin-boosted tempo change and clapped along with the chorus of ‘Not as Cool as Me’ in appreciation.”

Muna (who was last seen in Rocktober 2016 with Grouplove), is back in Minnesota... this time rocking the Turf Club in St Paul.

The all-girls trio (singer/production Katie Gavin, guitarist/synth Naomi McPherson, and guitarist Josette Maskin) made their television debut last November with “Loudspeaker” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

This is the band’s first-ever headlining tour to support About U, so catch them now while they’re under the radar. They’ve already sold out several major cities, so they have already built a good fanbase.

Swedish singer Tove Lo is headlining First Avenue. She won "Artist of the Year" and "Song of the Year" (for "Habits (Stay High)") at the Swedish Grammis earlier this year. Her latest album Queen of the Clouds is available now on Island.

Swedish pop singer/songwriter Erik Hassle to open. You may recall we previously caught Hassle with Twin Shadows in April 2015 and wrote that his song "No Words" was quickly becoming this the Summer single.

Colony House will be at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis next Saturday, October 10th. Their lead single "Silhouettes" became the #1 most played track on SiriusXM's Alt Nation for 4 months straight, so there is a lot of buzz for this band. Their debut full length album When I Was Younger came out last summer via Descendant Records, hitting #3 on Billboard Heatseekers Chart and #7 on iTunes Alternative Rock Charts.

Co-headlining will be rising Nashville foursome COIN in support of their self-titled debut album, released June 8. We previously mentioned this as a band to watch at SXSW 2015.

It was night of “friends “and “neighbors”  in Minneapolis as the Tour de Compadres featuring NeedToBreathe, Switchfoot, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, and Colony House rolled into the Cabooze Plaza last weekend.

Colony House is a Tennessee-based indie rock trio with Christian roots, as brothers Caleb Chapman (vocals) and Will Chapman (drums) are the sons of singer Stephen Curtis Chapman and were joined by guitarist Scott Mills, with bassist and keyboardist Parke Avery coming along for the tour.

Debut album When I Was Younger had just come out, with several songs having a pronounced, bigger sound, like lead single, ‘Silhouettes’.  The band didn’t have a lot of time with only a five-song set, but half of them stayed around to back Needtobreathe, during their own headlining performance.

Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors with Bo Rinehart

Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors is a Nashville band, whose members usually include Holcomb’s wife, Ellie, though she was understandably absent as the couple just had their newborn son, Huck.  New album, Medicine (Magnolia Records) came out at the beginning of the year, and the album continues to gain momentum with the band’s constant touring.

The newer ‘American Beauty’ opened their nine-song set, with band favorite song, ‘Nothing but Trouble’ following.  “Ten years dancing to the music; eight years dancing with the girl I love” from ‘Shine Like Lightning was a love letter to his wife, and Needtobreathe’s  Bo Rinehart jumped onstage on mandolin to assist on ‘I've Got You’.

Drew Holcomb

A fan-shouted request for single, ‘Tennessee’ from 2013’s Good Light, was heeded and inserted into the set list, as Holcomb mentioned it was unusual to hear a Minnesota request for a song about another state.

Another song inspired by his wife (I’m seeing a pattern here…) ‘What Would I Do Without You’ was sweet and mellow and the band ended with the call-and-response of the uplifting ‘Here We Go’. Holcomb mentioned from the stage that they’d already plotted their local return, back in town at the Varsity Theater next April 16^th, a nice relief after Tax Day.

Switchfoot

Veteran San Diego band Switchfoot made the very most of their paltry 35 min. set;  currently between albums but eager to join this tour, with singer Jon Foreman taking a page from the “Bono Playbook” realizing the best way to engage the crowd, is to be a part of it.

In what was mostly a greatest-hits set (to no one’s objection), Foreman spent his time on top of speakers, in the middle of the crowd, and playing both sides of the stage, to make sure everyone was involved.  The band opened with hit, ‘Stars’ and a mid-set highlight was Foreman recognizing a face in the front crowd, who had tweeted he was coming all the way from Pakistan just to see the band.

Deciding to bring him on stage, the band gathered around a single mic for ‘Hello Hurricane’ as the traveling fan played part cheerleader/ part harmonizer, clearly having the best day of his life.  Like Holcomb and Needtobreathe, Switchfoot is a “band of brothers”, with Foreman’s brother, Tim, taking center stage on bass and keyboards.

Often referring to the audience as “friends”, Foreman announced “I have one more left in me!” before launching into ‘Dare You to Move’ before leaving the stage sooner than most people wanted.

Needtobreathe

South Carolina’s Needtobreathe continues to evolve as performers and grow its fan base, even since we recently last saw them live.  The band, led by brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart and bassist Seth Bolt is still in support of their latest; Rivers in the Wasteland (Atlantic/Curb/Word Records) and headlined this Tour de Compadres (“Tour of Friends”) with a 79 min. closing set, shortened from their usual time which resulted in a few abridged versions of songs and a compressed playlist.

The opener was ‘State I’m In’, from the newest album, a stomper that set a nice tone for the rest of their set. Needtobreathe, like the other bands on the bill, have some definite Christian leanings, but because of shortened set times and the number of acts playing, letting their music do the talking, leaving the listener free to interpret any lyrics as closely (or not at all) as they wanted.

‘Wasteland’ slowed the pace a bit, with its “god on my side” chorus prompting numerous in the crowd to raise hands and sing along.  Bear described ‘Devil’s Been Talkin’ as one of his favorite songs that brother Bo wrote, while a truncated ‘Feet Don’t Fail Me Now’ led quickly into the first parts of ‘O Carolina’.

Setlist

‘Difference Maker’ seemed especially poignant to the mostly younger crowd, with many singing along word-for-word, with a buoyant ‘The Heart’ ending their main set.

A shortened ‘Brother’ first brought out Switchfoot’s Foreman to sing along, quickly followed by all of the opening acts, building into a climax complete with confetti cannons, that would have been a fine show ending,. But, the band decided instead to end with the quiet and contemplative ‘Washed by the Water’, done acoustically and with minimal instrumentation.

Crowd-wise, this was maybe the most respectable of the Cabooze Plaza crowd, with most there to actively listen to the music, sing a long, and be uplifted while having a good time.  Sounds like a night out with “friends” and “neighbors”? – Exactly.

The first time I saw Slow Magic, they were second of three bands/DJs over at the Triple Rock Social Club, last year.

I wrote that the DJ had a custom fox mask that would light up and change color to fit the mood of the songs. It was visually really cool, and the music's not bad either!

Although the show is at the Cedar Cultural Center, it's actually a First Avenue show. The last time Of Montreal played in Minneapolis, it was also at the Cedar last year, which Jamie described as, "a wildly inventive show" with balloons, "topless gremlins", and a horse-like contraption.

Of Montreal will be touring in support of their forthcoming album Aureate Gloom, which doesn't have a release date, at this time.

Opening up the show will be Pillar Point, who is out on their first US tour this fall. Pillar Point (Scott Reitherman) will be likely playing tracks from his self-titled debut album.

It's always good to see that Tennis will be back in Minneapolis on October 7th, celebrating their new album Ritual In Repeat (which came out September 9th on Communion Records). The husband/wife duo (Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley) is fresh off their sold-out North American tour with Haim.

Opening for Tennis will be Pure Bathing Culture. You may recall that Jessie caught the Portland-based band in Los Angeles earlier this year and reported, "Sarah Versprille’s souring, angelic vocals and Daniel Hindman’s incandescent guitar solos, this powerfully divine foursome sets the tone for a truly ethereal concert experience.
