Although Sky News said that The Pogues are best known for their song “Fairytale Of New York” with Kirsty MacColl, that wasn’t the song that I first found the Pogues.
It was still with Kirsty MacColl, but it was for Cole Porter’s “Miss Otis Regrets”, medley with “Just One of Those Things”, for AIDS benefit album Red Hot and Blue in 1990. The two songs were reworked to seamlessly mix together with a touch of Irish fiddles and traditional instruments.
If you haven’t heard their rendition, MacColl starts the song with a nonchalant excuse of why Miss Otis couldn’t make it to lunch. It’s slow and it’s sweet and it takes its time to tell the story of how Miss Otis shot her lover and was lynched by a mob. As the song drifts out, suddenly the music picks up, and in walks a young Shane MacGowan singing, “It was just one of those things, one of those crazy things”.
MacGowan was 33 the time, but the man looks like he was in his late 50s. And his rough voice sounded like it had lived a lifetime. It was such a contrast to MacColl’s beautiful vocals, and that’s why the medley works so well.
I mentioned earlier that I was sadden… but if you know MacGowan, he would’ve preferred if we celebrate his music. With that, I leave you with “Streams of Whiskey”.
By a wet thing called a tear
When the world is too dark
And I need the light inside of me
I'll walk into a bar and drink fifteen pints of beer
I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing.
