The lovely ladies of Deap Vally released their American Cockroach EP last month.

Deap Vally explain that the EP is, “a collection of songs we’ve been working on for a while that run the gamut from deeply personal, to outright satire and everything in between. These are songs for the underdog, the outlaw, the defeated, for days when you feel like no one understands you or you can’t do anything right.”

The EP came out at a time when the duo (Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards) was forced to leave the touring world, no thanks to the pandemic. We think they’re best experienced at a live show.

The last time we saw them, it was at Desert Daze in Oct 2017: “Female 80’s inspired rock duo Deap Vally, with Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, played in the Wright Tent and man can these girls wail. These two ladies met in a crochet class in Silverlake, CA. Their riff-heavy album of ’16 Femejism is as sexy as a Joan Jett album with the rock glitter of the Black Keys mixed with the White Stripes, and the band has played alongside artists like The Vaccines, Muse and Marilyn Manson. Gonna Make My Own Money was the highlight and Lindsey was doing backbends with her guitar towards the crowd. Bad For My Body was also a heavy hit of grunge and distortion from this duo.”

Suicide Squeeze Records will be re-issuing Death Valley Girls’ album Glow In The Dark, on August 27, 2021. The album was previously out of print since 2016… so here’s your chance to own the album this August. The vinyl pressing is limited to 2,000 copies (1,500 on Unite, Multiply, & Conquer splatter vinyl, 500 on Little Ghost tri-color vinyl).

We caught the band in Oct 2019 and wrote, “They brought along bad-ass stoner rockers Death Valley Girls and that mysterious Mojave-desert-cool that follows that quartet wherever it goes busted through an initially icy reception. Bonnie Bloomgarden and company bring the heavy Black Sabbath-y riffs and chugging Cramps vibe, but also a serious dose of charm. Bloomgarden was delightful and hilarious, telling the audience that we made “the right decision” by spending our Friday night with them and then applauding our decision. I wish everyone was as supportive!”

Third time’s the charm--

For the third time is less than a year, Los Angeles band Fitz and the Tantrums returned to one of their strongest markets, Minneapolis/St. Paul, for an intimate night at the Mainroom at First Avenue.

The band is currently on a summer co-headlining amphitheater tour with labelmates Young the Giant (who we saw on their own, earlier this year) and took advantage of a tour off-day bringing along tour opener, COIN with them for an energy-filled evening. The group was here last July for a slot at the Basilica Block Party, then returned to downtown Minneapolis in still-chilly April, for an abbreviated free show on the night of the NCAA Final Four Championship game (and we strangely seemed to be the only area outlet that fully covered that show).

We’ve written about Nashville band COIN since early 2015, managing to catch their frenetic set the following year, on one of six previous times in the area. The band has a brand new single, ‘Crash My Car’ ahead of their upcoming third full-length, due later this year.

The foursome (Chase Lawrence– vocals/synths; Ryan Winnen– drums; Joe Memmel– guitar; Matt Martin– touring bass) have always brought an infectious energy to their live performance and this night was no exception. “I feel like every time we come to Minneapolis, something strange happens, but not tonight” Lawrence said, without further detail, “but not tonight, we have to come back!”.

After the new ‘I Want it All’ (not to be confused with the Queen song), the biggest crowd response was saved for their breakthrough radio single, ‘Talk Too Much’, with the crowd singing the chorus back to the band, and COIN ended their forty minute set with 2015’s ‘Fingers Crossed’. Expect them to return and headline once the new album is released.

Though technically an off-day from their summer amphitheater tour, you could tell that Fitz and the Tantrums were more interested in celebrating and playing live, than any relaxing and putting their feet up, still one of the better live bands touring today. The full First Avenue crowd seemed ready as well, responding overall with enough gusto that you’d think the band hadn’t been here in years.

The six piece group (Michael Fitzpatrick– vocals/keys; Noelle Scaggs– vocals/percussion; James King– sax/flute/keys; Joseph Karnes– bass; Jeremy Ruzumna– keys; John Wicks – drums) has had a continually growing following locally, stopping by a dozen times over the last eight years, including several Basilica Block Party appearances, which have all heightened their local profile and continued popularity.

The main difference between this seventy-five minute headlining set and the April appearance, was that the crowd was treated to several new songs, from their upcoming full-length, All the Feels, due out in September, even offering a tour-only CD EP with new songs at the merch booth, for fans that couldn’t wait to own the long-awaited new music.

Scaggs helped incite the crowd with tambourine in hand during classic ‘Don’t Got to Work it Out’, and Fitzpatrick smiled wide as he noted that most in the crowd knew all the lyrics to the older songs. Fans counted along on the new ‘123456’ and went crazy when initial hit, ‘Moneygrabber’ was played early in the set, with Fitzpatrick also recalling the band’s first local appearances and the extreme temperature swing between their initial February appearance, and then returning that July which was 120 degrees warmer.

New songs, ‘OCD’ with a dizzying rhythm and hard drumbeat and ‘I Need Help!’, perhaps the band’s most seriously themed lyrics though still played upbeat, were played with 2013’s solid ‘Fools Gold’ in between, with everyone’s hands up in the air next for 2016’s ‘Roll Up’.

2016’s emotional ‘Burn it Down’ is Fitzpatrick’s love letter to his wife and a new song that is a midtempo earworm filled with lyrics of determined positivity called ’Shine’ ended the main set.

A roar from the crowd helped bring the band back for a three-song encore beginning with their game-changing hit from 2016, ‘HandClap’ followed by new song, ‘All the Feels' which Fitzpatrick revealed was to be the title track of the upcoming record, and proved to be a slow burner, ideal for swaying from left to right, and back again.

Fitzpatrick thanked everyone on behalf of the band (as he always has graciously done at shows), for making their dreams come true, “Thank you being real people and real music lovers to spread the word about this band” with the irresistible whistled intro beginning the evening’s final song, ‘The Walker’ punctuated by an explosion from two confetti cannons just before the last chorus to shower the main floor and end things with exclaim.

Fitz and the Tantrums continues on their summer co-headlining outdoor tour, but expect a return appearance soon after the new album releases, as the Twin Cities has shown, they will come out in large numbers and happily experience all the feels live.

We love Australiaâ€™s San Cisco. Weâ€™ve seen the band over 10 times (see our timeline on the sidebar).

For promotion for their third album The Water, the band was supposed to play Minneapolis - but unfortunately, at the last minute they had to cancel their 7th Street Entry in 2017. After two years, they band will be back - hopefully to play some of those The Water tracks!

Show up early to check out Western Australian artist Carla Geneve, touring in support of her debut self-titled EP that came out yesterday (June 7th) via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. Geneve came on the music scene with her debut single â€œGregâ€™s Discount Chemistâ€ was released to overwhelming local radio Triple J.

Talking about her video for the lead single, â€œYesterdayâ€™s Clothes,â€ (from the debut self-titled EP), she said, â€œI wanted the video to reflect the personal nature of the song. To me, sitting alone in front of a camera is a vulnerable situation, a lot like releasing a song to the world which describes private parts of my life. The song is about falling out of love with someone and feeling guilty about it. I wrote it at a time when I was burning the candle at both ends and had no energy left to try to deal with the end of a relationship. Most of the words came when I was doing a long drive back from some gig or another in regional WA. Iâ€™d been up all night and had to be somewhere the next day, so I hadnâ€™t had a shower or changed clothes. â€

No opening band listed, but considering they have a double album â€¦ playing a double set might not be a problem for this band.

Trivia: Did you know that CATS was only supposed to record a handful of Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead's "Fare Thee Well" concerts in 2015? The response was so positive and the fans demanded it - so the band continued making music together all these years.

We saw Charly Bliss in May 2017 and wrote, â€œThough theyâ€™ve been a band for half a decade, it seems like the time is now for Charly Bliss, the four-piece breaking through to alternative radio and singer Eva Hendricks was in full celebration mode, even dressing in a fetching white dress, reminiscent of Doll Parts-era Courtney Love. The group is in support of debut full length, Guppy (Barsuk Records) released just a couple weeks ago, with the Onionâ€™s AV Club already deeming it â€œan instant classicâ€. The bandâ€™s sound is akin to the likes of Sleater-Kinney and Veruca Salt (who theyâ€™ve both toured with) and consists of Hendricks, her older brother Sam, bassist (and former boyfriend) Dan Shure, and guitarist Spencer Fox, who she met at age fifteen and who actually voiced Dash in Disneyâ€™s The Incredibles and Mudbud in Air Buddies.â€

The Bacon Brothers will be playing the Dakota Jazz Club next week (July 13th), in support of their new self-titled album (released June 1st on Forosoco Music).

The talented brother duo features award-winning actor Kevin Bacon from such films like Hollow Man, Footloose, and Flatliners (the original 90s version) and Emmy-winning composer Michael Bacon.

The brothers will be joined on stage with a full backing band: Paul Guzzone (bass, backing vocals), Joe Mennonna (keyboards, accordion), Ira Siegel (lead guitar, mandolin and backing vocals) and Frank Vilardi (drums).

Of course, due to the popularity of the group and the intimate small seating of the Dakota Jazz Club, the show has sold out.

Special guest Cindy Alexander to open.

We caught Niger’s internationally acclaimed Bombino in Oct 2016 and noted, “If you didn’t know, Bombino (real name Omara Moctar) came from a troubled time in Niger, when there were the Tuareg people rebelled against the country in the early 90s. Niger, in fear of another rebellion, basically banned all guitars (which was seen as a symbol of rebellion). Bombino was one of the key musicians representing his people...”

It’s rare to see Niger bands in town, so if you love international music, go see them next Sunday.

Porches is back with a new album The House, which came out in January via Domino Records. We caught the young singer on his tour for his breakthrough album Pool in April 2016 (and again in September 2016) and wrote, “New York’s Porches drew the biggest crowd of the night, thanks to his highly anticipated 80’s inspired new record Pool. If you didn’t know, Porches is the stage name for Aaron Maine, a charismatic young singer who wrote and recorded almost everything on his record in his new, tiny Manhattan apartment.”

North London’s Girl Ray to open. Girl Ray’s debut record Earl Grey came out last Summer on Moshi Moshi, and they’ve been described as a bit of Tiger Trap (and you know we’re big of Tiger Trap). This is a rare chance to catch the girl trio (Poppy, Sophie, and Iris) in the U.S., and an opportunity to hear one of the best “20 Best Pop Albums of 2017” (according to Rolling Stone).

Also, local musician Cheap Fantasy is on the bill.

We first saw the explosive band at the now-defunct Nether Bar in 2013 and wrote, “Beginning with the One/Two punch of 'Hard Times (They are Coming)' and 'Blues Hand Me Down', the crowd was immediately in a frenzy; asked all evening to call-and-respond, clap along, move front to back, and generally become a part of the show. Vocalist/frontman Ty Taylor has come a long way from his Rockstar:INXS days, morphing into a mesmerizing and charismatic showman that spins, juts, and shakes in a way that would make James Brown proud. Drummer Richard Danielson and bassist Rick Barrio Dill more than ably held down the bottom end, while band 'secret weapon', guitarist Nalle Colt (looking like a dapper Viggo Mortenson) impressed with roaring riffs and stretched out solos.”

Legendary English punk/rock band The Damned is celebrating their 40th Anniversary with an upcoming U.S. tour. Since the influential band don’t really make their way to Minneapolis that often, I feel this is a very important show that you should be aware of. Of course, their many fans agreed, and the show is long sold out.

Expect to hear all chart-topping singles on this tour, including fan-favorites, ‘Love Song’ and ‘Smash It Up’.

No opening band is listed on the venue's website, but the poster lists Bleached. We've been a fan of the sisters in Bleached since 2012 when they opened up for Veronica Falls.

Truly it will be the gift that keeps on giving when Leeds quartet The Wedding Present drop by the St. Paul next Saturday, April 22nd for an intimate show at the Turf Club. The Present has been doing their thing now for over 3 decades, effervescent rock with a post-punk flair featuring the delightful British drone of lead singer and only original member David Gedge. Though the band has gone through several line-up changes, one thing remains the same: those fuzzy melodies were made for blasting out your car window while driving the city watching the flowers bloom. Check out The Wedding Present’s newest release 2016’s Going, Going… which was one of my favorites of 2016! But don’t neglect the band’s impressive back catalogue, including Seamonsters (1991), an album recorded at the famous Pachyderm studios in Cannon Falls with your boyfriend’s favorite producer, Steve Albini.

Colleen Green, billed as Colleen Green Band, will warm up the show. The Wedding Present loves these guys, and after seeing her (complete with Vuart) in September 2015, we can see why.

Arizona to open the show. Yep, the band’s not from Arizona, but it’s definitely a better sounding name than “New Jersey”. $15.50.

While the Snow thankfully held off until after the show and into the next day, there was plenty of Show to take in at local station GO 96.3’s second annual Snow Show held at Myth in suburban Maplewood and headlined by Bastille.

Opening up the multi-band evening was a local group that literally battled their way into their appearance, winning out over a handful of local bands, for the honor of opening the show. John Chuck & the Class are an alternative pop/indie hip-hop duo (JC "John Chuck" Stroebel and Henry "The Class" Donato) that took advantage of their twenty-minute slot to introduce themselves to their biggest audience to date, play songs from their self-released EP Grow Up, and more than ably stir up the crowd, for what was several more hours of music ahead.

Next up was Nashville formed band COIN, who paid dividends in providing a good spark of youthful energy and fun, in their brief thirty-three minute set. The synth-embellished indie pop quartet (Chase Lawrence-vocals/synths; Joe Memmel- guitar; Zachary Dyke- bass; Ryan Winnen- drums) started as students at Belmont University in 2012 signing with Columbia soon , and is still touring on 2015’s self-titled debut, though a new album is imminent in the new year.

The all-ages crowd screamed in approval as singer Lawrence noted, before they launched into ‘Time Machine’ and then the new ‘I Don’t Want to Dance’. ‘Run’ was irresistible with its jangly guitar intro and Lawrence’s rhythmic near-falsetto vocals and its road testing of the new ‘Boyfriend’ was a success judging from the crowd’s reaction. Closing with the kissing anthem ‘Talk Too Much’, the song has received heavy airplay and obviously the crowd’s ear, as they sang along with the band at each chorus.

Another Nashville-based group was next, the hippie folk-hop/pop ensemble Judah & the Lion, who has continued growing to next level heights, every time we see them live. The core trio (Singer/guitarist Judah Akers; mandolinist Brian Macdonald; banjo player Nate Zuercher) joined together in 2011 with their newest full-length, Folk Hop n’ Roll, taking their traditional folk/bluegrass sound and mixing it up with hip-hop and dance grooves for a interesting and unique combination.

“We’re gonna give you guys everything we have” singer Akers said, starting their thirty-five minute set with the harmonizing intro of ‘Kickin’ da Leaves’, which had the crowd clapping in unison immediately. Hippie dancing was encouraged during the mandolin-fueled ‘Hold On’ and things got a little crazy on stage as the band twerked in line to an auto-tuned T-Pain cover before Akers jumped into the crowd to lead everyone in jumping to ‘Reputation’ from the middle of the floor.

“This was our favorite song in the 4^th grade” Akers said, keeping energy high with their cover of The Killers’ ‘Mr. Brightside’ (and making some of us feel really old) grabbing sunglasses and running along the high bar counters to sing the song amongst outstretched hands and cell phones in the air.

Zuercher’s banjo was fuzzed and pedaled to sound like a lead guitar on ‘Insane’ and they thanked the station for their support before ‘Rich Kids’, a song about pursuing your dreams, which seemed to a strike a chord with a younger audience.

A brief wail from the Lion King introduced ‘Take It All Back’, a massive hit as anthemic as anything Mumford and Sons has ever done, and a serious contender for best song of late summer/early fall. With a memorable live performance and catchy songs, Judah & the Lion very nearly stole the entire show.

The mood shifted to hazy, experimental, and more theatric as Orange County electro-pop singer-songwriter Banks was next, playing many songs from her newest, The Altar (Harvest Records) for the very first time before a live audience. She and the station have been friends for some time, as she played the very first GO Show in March 2015, which we also covered, and played a forty-minute set, though she is not currently on tour.

Joined by two veiled interpretive dancers, a keyboardist and live drummer, the singer, dressed in wispy black cloak and boots began with ‘Poltergeist’ (co-written/produced by Grammy nominee John Hill), amidst minimal red and blue lighting and rolling fog. ‘F**k with Myself’ throbbed with its hip-hop beat and Kate Bush-esque vocal effects sung into a second mic and the “passive aggressive” chorus ‘Gemini Feed’ seemed to describe a lot of Minnesotans by nature.

She’s not afraid to curse to make her point, as on the new ‘Weaker Girl’ but speaking between songs, she seemed quite shy, “this is the first time I’m playing any of this stuff”, she said demurely. Tempo downshifted further for a spare ‘Drowning’, her voice framed mostly by a hypnotic drum beat before elevating back for ‘Beggin’ for Thread’, her breakout hit from first album, Goddess. Ending with ‘Waiting Game’ (which may ring familiar from a Victoria’s Secret commercial), the show transcended into the ethereal.

Not a French band, rather a London alt/indie pop group named after the French holiday celebrated on singer Dan Smith’s birthday, Bastille introduced us to a sixty-seven minute glimpse into their Wild World with the opening ‘Send Them Off!’.

Joined by keyboardist Kyle Simmons, guitarist/bassist Will Farquarson, drummer Chris “Woody” Wood and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Barnes, next was the Twin Peaks-inspired ‘Laura Palmer’ with Smith jumping about and standing on monitor speakers to help incite the crowd.

Understanding the crowd was there to have fun and unwind, Smith introduced ‘Snakes’, a song peppered with soundbites as being for “anyone who feels like jumping up and down like a maniac”. For ‘Flaws’, Smith left the stage to serenade everyone on the floor as he made his way through the crowd, with security in tow.

Making his way to the upper deck, he hung over the railing for ‘Two Evils’, from the new Wild World album (Virgin/EMI Universal Records), the audience craning their necks in rapt attention to see him, and Smith slapping high held hands on his way back down.

Digging deep, the band unearthed ‘The Draw’ from their extended first album and the crowd roared and clapped along for early hit, ‘Bad Blood’. With the Kelly Le Brock sound clip introducing lead single from the new album, ‘Good Grief’, Smith said this was the song “for anyone feeling like jumping up and down to a song about death”(which didn’t deter anyone).

Bastille’s abbreviated set wound up with the mythology-inspired ‘Icarus’ and Smith saying to the receptive audience, “We’re far away from home, but we feel very welcome, so thank you” before starting biggest hit ‘Pompeii’ slow and solo on the piano, with the song quickly rising aided by a thumping drum and chorus of harmony voices.

As the house lights went up and crowd filed out, snow had started to fall outside (continuing into the next day, and measuring six to eight inches) giving everyone the Snow part of Snow Show, but the Show portion of five bands over almost five hours, was by far the most memorable part.
